Song Yunyi was stunned.
After a long pause, she said, “I’m just an intern lawyer. I have to follow the arrangements from above. I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong in that regard.”
“As a lawyer, with the court date tomorrow, you let an undeserving lawyer squeeze you out of your position without a fight—do you really think that’s fine?” Feng Cheng’s words weren’t exactly aggressive, but every sentence hit the mark, precisely calling out the avoidance mentality buried deep within Song Yunyi.
Although she had given up this case because of reassignment from her superiors and Ren Jian’s involvement.
But she hadn’t even fought for it—she simply gave up. At the root of it, she just didn’t want to cause trouble, afraid others would think she was a nuisance.
“If this is your mentality, then I don’t think you need to continue being a lawyer.”
Song Yunyi, having been scolded like this by him, clenched her fists, a hint of anger coloring her expression. “I admit I have my issues, but I’ll change and grow in the future. You don’t know me, so you have no right to criticize me here.”
She was selfish, always prioritizing herself above all else.
Besides, with Lawyer He on the case and all the evidence in hand, there was no way they could lose.
Feng Cheng leaned back on the sofa, his wrist resting on one side, the understated luxury watch on his arm casting a cold, faint gleam in the private room. “So this isn’t within the scope of your growth?”
Song Yunyi, provoked by his mocking gaze, straightened her expression. “It is!”
He seemed to curl his lips slightly, and Song Yunyi found it hard to tell from his expression whether he actually cared about this matter. For a moment, she couldn’t quite read him.
But he seemed to be interested in many things. “How do you plan to handle this?”
Song Yunyi naturally wasn’t going to let Ren Jian off the hook.
“Don’t worry, President Feng. I’ll handle it properly and won’t delay tomorrow’s court session.” She couldn’t say too much in front of Ren Jian.
She’d already thought it through—tomorrow, Ren Jian had a big client. She’d slip some laxatives into his water later.
Make him shit himself!
The girl couldn’t hide anything. Her pretty eyes darted around, looking exactly like someone plotting some mischief—though it was the kind of scheme that would hurt the enemy a thousand but lose herself eight hundred.
Feng Cheng made no comment on this.
Song Yunyi saw that he was ignoring her again. She knew he was the most mischievous sort—calling her over wasn’t about settling scores; it was about toying with her.
“President Feng, since I’ve arrived on time as you requested, you should also fulfill your promise.” She was referring to the money.
Before Feng Cheng could answer, a commotion came from outside the door.
The door to the private room was knocked on again.
When Song Yunyi saw that the people who had arrived were police officers, her almond-shaped eyes went wide in an instant, an unbelievable thought surfacing in her mind.
He called the police over this little bit of money?
But she quickly realized something was wrong. The moment the police walked in, Ren Jian’s face changed drastically. He looked around frantically as if trying to escape, looking extremely guilty.
The lead male officer wore a black uniform. His features were well-proportioned, his build was sturdy, and there was a long scar on his arm—clearly a formidable character.
He walked straight up to Ren Jian, produced an arrest warrant, and said coldly, “I’m from the Municipal Bureau’s Criminal Investigation Detachment. Ren Jian, you are suspected of helping to destroy and forge evidence, and of harboring a criminal. This is your arrest warrant. You’re coming with us.”
Ren Jian’s expression was ugly. “You need evidence to arrest me too, right? How come I don’t even know about these crimes I supposedly committed?”
“The arrest warrant states everything clearly. If you’ve been wronged, we’ll apologize after the investigation clears things up. For now, please cooperate. You’re a lawyer—you should know the consequences of resisting arrest.” The male officer gestured. “Take him!”
After the junior officers had Ren Jian in custody, the male officer said a few words of apology to everyone before leaving.
As he was being led away, Ren Jian struggled violently, shouting nonstop, drawing the attention of many onlookers.
Cheng Ziyan had just finished a drinking session nearby when he was drawn by the noise. He looked up and saw Song Yunyi inside the private room.
Thinking something had happened to her, his expression changed drastically and he hurried over. “Sister Song, what are you doing here?”
From a distance, Ren Jian could still hear that “Sister Song.” The sheer absurdity of it struck his heart, and for a moment he forgot to struggle.
He had looked down on her before, for no other reason than pure jealousy.
This new lawyer had joined the firm with remarkable ease, yet the clothes she wore were the cheapest knockoffs from Taobao, and the bag she carried was of the lowest quality.
He thought someone like her belonged at the very bottom by nature, that she shouldn’t appear at Ming Ju—a place he’d poured his blood and sweat into. But unfortunately, she was exceptionally capable. Even if he refused to admit it, he knew that before long, she would completely trample him underfoot.
He was proud yet insecure.
Twistedly unwilling to let that happen, he kept suppressing her, wanting her to back down and leave Ming Ju on her own.
And yet—this very person could be warmly called “Sister Song” by President Cheng.
What kind of figure was President Cheng? A top-tier family with deep heritage, said to have produced high-ranking officials for generations.
He had seen him once before, following behind President Li. A favored son of heaven, surrounded by admirers. No matter how impressive President Li was in front of others, in front of President Cheng, he was nothing but meek and deferential, treading carefully for fear of offending him.
If Song Yunyi knew him, then what kind of identity did she have?
Was she acquainted with President Feng from the very beginning?
Something inside him seemed to come crashing down. He couldn’t help but burst into laughter, only to be sharply reprimanded by the police.
When Cheng Ziyan entered the private room and found Feng Cheng there too, he swept a suspicious glance around the room and frowned. “Brother Cheng, how come you’re together with Sister Song?”
Song Yunyi was still reeling from the shock of Ren Jian’s arrest. Just as she was about to explain upon hearing Cheng Ziyan’s words, she caught the sound of a cold sneer.
She followed the sound with her gaze.
Feng Cheng’s expression was indifferent, but his tone was extremely arrogant. “Your Sister Song has legs. She can be with whoever she wants. If you can’t stand it, have a stroller custom-made for her and lay her down in it.”
Although Cheng Ziyan and Feng Cheng were from the same circle and had known each other for over a decade, Cheng Ziyan had grown up with Gu Lianhuai as childhood friends who were as close as brothers, so naturally he was closer to Gu Lianhuai.
After that incident in sophomore year of high school, the group had gradually drifted apart.
Now Feng Cheng had his own circle, and their current relationship was merely exchanging greetings when they met.
“That’s not what I meant.” Seeing his expression turn sour, Cheng Ziyan explained, “Sister Song is, after all, Lian Huai’s girlfriend. Given your relationship with him, if he found out Sister Song had any involvement with you, wouldn’t that harm her?”
Feng Cheng let out a short, contemptuous laugh, his dark, ink-black eyes turning cold. “I wasn’t aware that I’d become so universally despised.”
“Brother Cheng, that’s not what I meant…” Cheng Ziyan truly couldn’t explain himself. “I just think that with so many lawyers in the capital, there’s no need for you to seek out Sister Song.”
Although Gu Lianhuai appeared unaffected on the surface, and the people around him maintained their usual expressions when Feng Cheng was mentioned, only he and Lu Zhen knew that the biggest thorn in Gu Lianhuai’s heart was Feng Cheng.
From childhood to adulthood, he had always been compared to Feng Cheng—family background, looks, academics—everything was held up for comparison.
Yet he had never once beaten Feng Cheng.
If Feng Cheng had been diligent and hardworking, that would have been one thing.
But his attitude in class depended entirely on the weather—sunny days were good for sleeping, cloudy days were also good for sleeping, and rainy days were even better for sleeping.
And it was with this leisurely, carefree demeanor that he had always bested Gu Lianhuai.
By now, Feng Cheng had almost become his obsession.
If Song Yunyi truly had any involvement with Feng Cheng, he couldn’t guarantee that Gu Lianhuai wouldn’t break up with her outright.
Although Song Yunyi was usually quiet and reserved, everyone around her could see clearly that her heart and eyes were filled entirely with Gu Lianhuai.
Feng Cheng couldn’t be bothered to listen. He stood up and headed for the door, and Song Yunyi quickly called out to stop him. “President Feng.”
“Something?” His tone was icy.
Song Yunyi said, “I can keep work and personal matters separate. I’ll continue handling Ms. Chi’s case—I won’t back out, and you can’t back out of the compensation either.”
Feng Cheng curled his lips, his tone as cold as frost. “You get yourself turned into a handmaiden over a relationship, having to read people’s expressions in everything you do. If the Qing Dynasty hadn’t fallen, would you be helping him ascend the throne?”
Song Yunyi felt his words were a bit harsh. She frowned. “President Feng, there’s no need for you to say that.”
Feng Cheng didn’t stay to hear the rest. He strode away.
