Leaving the shoes where they were felt like a small act of self-preservation, although the sight of them on the carpet continued to irritate me every time my attention drifted in that direction. I moved the sewing basket back toward the wardrobe instead, keeping the ugly strip of stitches because throwing away experimental evidence merely because it offended me seemed scientifically irresponsible. The System had confirmed that the competence I remembered still existed as part of me even when I could not currently perform it properly, which was reassuring in principle and infuriating in practice. It also made the collection of unopened tabs floating beside me considerably more interesting.

“If procedural access is separate from knowledge, I want to see the Skills tab.”

The System responded immediately. The interface reorganized itself into categories, but a notation appeared above the entries before I could mistake what I was seeing for a complete inventory of everything I could or could not do.Full novel: The Soulflame Chronicles — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

I read through the surfaced entries slowly, matching the numbers against things that had already happened and things I had never thought twice about when they existed safely on a character sheet. The notation at the top mattered almost as much as the values themselves. This was not a comprehensive list of everything Radiance knew, nor some cosmic inventory of every mundane task she had somehow avoided learning. The System was showing me the abilities and deficiencies it considered useful to the questions I was asking right now, which meant there could be considerably more waiting behind contexts I had not encountered yet.

Dance and Court Performance explained a great deal of what my body had been doing since I arrived. Royal Etiquette explained almost everything about surviving the audience hall without publicly humiliating myself. Even Eloquent Flattery being higher than ordinary Persuasion felt extremely Radiance, although I suspected Father would have opinions about whether anything I had said to him this morning qualified as flattery.

Then I reached the bottom again.

“Shoe Tying zero.”

CORRECT

I looked toward the abandoned shoes on the carpet. “I gathered.”

My attention moved upward through the other domestic entries. Cooking and Laundry at zero were unsurprising for someone who had been raised with servants, but the other two caught my attention for a different reason.

“Packing zero.”

CORRECT

I thought about the months Radiance had spent traveling in search of Cassia, then realized that traveling and preparing oneself for travel were not remotely the same thing when you had spent your entire life with attendants handling trunks, clothing, toiletries, supplies, and every other boring detail before you ever reached the carriage.

“And Saddling a Horse zero, even though Riding is six.”

CORRECT

That one required even less thought. “Someone puts the saddle on. Princess gets on the horse.”

SIMPLIFICATION ACCEPTED

“That one isn’t even insulting. That is exactly what I would have written.”

My attention moved back to Sewing and Mending.

“One.”

CORRECT

That made the ugly scrap of stitching considerably more explicable. Radiance was not literally incapable of putting a needle through fabric. She simply possessed the sort of minimal familiarity someone might acquire after being shown how to make a basic repair once or twice and then spending the rest of her life surrounded by people whose actual job included preventing her from needing to do it herself.

“So that is what I was using.”

PARTIALLY

“Partially?”

CURRENT EMBODIED EXECUTION REFLECTED RECOGNIZED SEWING AND MENDING SKILL, PLAYER-ORIGIN DECLARATIVE KNOWLEDGE, CURRENT COORDINATION, AND CONSCIOUS DIRECTION.

I looked toward the scrap again. That explained why the result had not been complete incompetence even though it had felt horribly clumsy compared with what I knew I should be able to do. Radiance had enough sewing experience to give my hands a starting point, while my own knowledge told me what the finished work should look like and exactly how badly I was failing to reproduce it.

The distinction also confirmed something important about the display itself. These were Radiance’s established proficiencies being surfaced because they were relevant to what I had just tested, but the panel was not claiming to define the entire person. My biology knowledge had not vanished merely because Cell Biology was absent from the list. Japanese had not ceased to exist. Neither had driving, cooking knowledge, karate, gaming, or anything else I remembered learning before this morning. The System was apparently capable of pulling forward whatever part of the larger skill structure mattered when the appropriate context appeared.

“What happens if I actually manage to regain one of my old skills?”

CURRENT SKILLS MAY DEVELOP THROUGH TRAINING, SUCCESSFUL USE, QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE, AND PLAYER-ORIGIN RECONNECTION.

“So the values can change.”

YES

“And new Skills can appear.”

YES

That was important enough to sit with for a moment. The sheet I had built was not a permanent ceiling. It described where Radiance started, while what happened from here depended on what I actually did.

“Advancement.”

The Skills panel receded and another tutorial section opened.

INITIAL RULE: ADVANCEMENT

Classes advance primarily through Experience.

Backgrounds advance through recognized responsibilities, achievements, milestones, accomplishments, and qualifying events relevant to the Background.

Heritages advance through qualifying awakenings, discoveries, transformations, covenants, exposures, achievements, or other relevant events.

Skills improve through successful use, training, instruction, practice, and qualifying experience.

Exact advancement requirements may be visible, partially visible, or hidden.

I read the distinctions twice because this was substantially more elaborate than the progression model I remembered designing. Classes still behaved like something recognizably game-like. Gain experience, eventually gain levels. Backgrounds and Heritages were stranger, responding to what actually happened rather than simply accumulating the same universal resource.

“So killing monsters gives me experience.”

POTENTIALLY

“And if I kill enough monsters, I become better at being Crown Princess.”

NO

“Excellent. One obvious design decision survived.”

BACKGROUND ADVANCEMENT REQUIRES RELEVANT DEVELOPMENT.

I opened Reluctant Crown Princess.

RELUCTANT CROWN PRINCESS — RANK I

Recognized role: Heir Apparent of CalderAdvancement criteria: Partially UndisclosedRecognized progression events: 1

Current thematic pressures include responsibility, autonomy, governance, public expectation, dynastic obligation, and personal relationship to the Crown.

I stared at the last line longer than I intended. “Personal relationship to the Crown sounds ominously like therapy.”

BACKGROUND PROGRESSION IS NOT THERAPY.

“That is exactly what a therapist disguised as a game mechanic would say.”

No response appeared, so I focused on the progression event instead. “The one event was this morning.”

YES

“Which part?”

MULTIPLE COMPONENTS CONTRIBUTED.

“Father yelling at me.”

PARTIALLY

“Not starting an international incident.”

PARTIALLY

“Requesting dismissal correctly.”

PARTIALLY

“Being informed that I might be getting married for political reasons.”

RELEVANT

I made a face at the panel. “Can you be less vague?”

YES

I waited several seconds before realizing nothing else was coming. “You aren’t going to.”

CORRECT

I leaned back in the chair and considered what the Background was actually measuring. I had created Reluctant Crown Princess because Radiance wanted the throne while resenting almost every restriction attached to earning it. The contradiction had been entertaining when it was characterization. Now the System apparently considered negotiating that contradiction a literal progression path.

The phrase future Queen from Father’s reprimand surfaced again, bringing with it the same immediate certainty I had felt in court. I wanted that. Whatever else had changed, the crown did not feel like an obligation I wanted to escape. The work, restrictions, political marriage negotiations, and constant observation were another matter entirely, but the idea of eventually ruling Calder appealed to me strongly enough that the Background suddenly felt much less hypothetical.

“Does wanting the throne matter?”

YES

The simple answer landed harder than the surrounding mechanics. I had expected another explanation about qualifying events or hidden criteria, but apparently the System considered the desire itself relevant.

“I wrote Radiance wanting it.”

YES

“And now I want it.”

YES

I nodded slowly and closed the Background before I could tumble back into the identity discussion we had only just escaped. Court Performer was easier, and the Class panel opened with enough familiar structure to give my brain something comparatively uncomplicated to work with.

COURT PERFORMER — LEVEL 3

Primary advancement: Experience Recent Experience Sources: Formal Royal Audience Social Conflict Under Observation Successful Court Performance Achievement Reward: Royal Pains

Current Experience: 38% toward Level 4

I blinked at the percentage. “I got experience for arguing with Father.”

YOU SUCCESSFULLY EMPLOYED MULTIPLE CLASS-RELEVANT CAPABILITIES DURING A CONSEQUENTIAL SOCIAL ENCOUNTER.

“That sounds much more impressive than what happened.”

CLASS ADVANCEMENT DOES NOT REQUIRE YOUR PERSONAL RESPECT FOR THE ENCOUNTER.

I opened the recent sources again. Social Conflict Under Observation made sense. Successful Court Performance made less sense until I remembered that Court Performer was not simply a musical or dancing class. Radiance had been built around presence, performance, social manipulation, and the ability to control a room. Apparently being dragged into an audience, verbally fencing with a king, and leaving on my own terms counted.

“So I could level this without fighting.”

YES

“Entirely socially?”

POTENTIALLY

That pleased me more than I expected. I had built Radiance to survive a campaign without becoming a conventional warrior, and the System had apparently taken that intention seriously enough to make a hostile court audience mechanically valuable.

I switched to Heritage, and the panel changed immediately.

SOULFLAME BLOODLINE, MANIFESTED — RANK I

Classification: Heritage State: Active Expression: Manifested

Recognized Heritage Ability:

Soulflame Spark

Additional Heritage information remains undiscovered.

I had expected the title, but I had not expected how seeing Manifested attached to my actual body would feel. The Soulflame Bloodline had begun as one of the more indulgent pieces of Radiance’s design, a supernatural inheritance descending from an ancient pact and an Abyssal sovereign whose blood had persisted through Calder’s royal line. It was supposed to explain the horns, tail, longevity, and magic while leaving plenty of room for the campaign to reveal things I had deliberately not defined. Apparently the world had taken that open space as permission.

“Additional information remains undiscovered.”

CORRECT

“But it is my blood.”

CORRECT

“And you won’t tell me what it does.”

YOU POSSESS CURRENTLY RECOGNIZED INFORMATION. ADDITIONAL EXPRESSIONS REQUIRE DISCOVERY OR QUALIFYING DEVELOPMENT.

I rubbed my thumb against the edge of the desk. “I left parts vague so the campaign could surprise me.”

WORLD DEVELOPMENT INCORPORATED AVAILABLE AUTHORIAL LATITUDE.

“That sentence is going to haunt me.”

I focused on Soulflame Spark.

SOULFLAME SPARK — HERITAGE ABILITY

Produce and manipulate a minor expression of manifested Soulflame.

Current expression is limited by Heritage Rank, Attunement, Reserve, Control, and user experience.

Additional properties may be discovered through use.

A thrill moved through me before I could suppress it. The healing draughts and spatial satchel were magical, but they belonged to a world that had handed them to me. Soulflame was different because, according to the System, I could actually do magic.

My fingers lifted slightly from the desk before common sense caught up with curiosity. The room contained expensive furniture, curtains, bedding, paper, clothing, and enough unknown materials to make testing supernatural fire indoors a questionable decision even if the ability technically belonged to me.

“Is Soulflame actual fire?”

PARTIALLY

I immediately distrusted the answer. “Does it burn things?”

POTENTIALLY

“Does using it here risk setting my bedroom on fire?”

POTENTIALLY

I lowered my hand before curiosity could win. “We’re not testing that yet.”

RISK ASSESSMENT ACCEPTED

The decision cost more self-control than I wanted to admit. Somewhere between the horns, magical storage, healing potions, and System interface, I had apparently reached the point where finding out I could produce supernatural flame felt less frightening than finding out I had lost the ability to tie shoes. I still wanted to see it badly enough that I made a mental note to locate somewhere nonflammable as soon as possible.

The remaining Character tabs waited above me, and I moved to Attributes next, expecting the familiar values I had assigned during character creation. Instead, the System presented all eighteen in four organized groups.

ATTRIBUTES

Physical

Might 8 Agility 20 Coordination 24 Endurance 12

Cognitive

Reason 13 Memory 16 Focus 15 Will 16 Adaptability 13 Perception 14 Intuition 16

Social

Presence 28 Empathy 15 Guile 22 Composure 25

Aetheric

Attunement 20 Reserve 13 Control 18

My attention went straight to Might. “Eight.”

CORRECT

“I remember that being eight. Seeing it now is worse.”

NO VALUE CHANGE DETECTED

“That is not the problem.”

Luke Thompson had spent years lifting four days a week. I had never been enormous, but I liked being strong. I liked watching numbers increase and the uncomplicated satisfaction of adding weight to a bar and knowing I could move something that had once been too heavy. Radiance had been built around an entirely different physical ideal, and the disparity was obvious when I flexed one arm beneath the fitted sleeve and felt lean muscle tighten beneath the fabric. There was definition there, but the shoulder was smaller, the arm slender, the entire body developed through dancing, acrobatics, riding, and generally avoiding situations where brute force became necessary.

“I used to be stronger.”

PLAYER-ORIGIN LUCAS MICAH THOMPSON ASSESSED ESTIMATED MIGHT: 14

I looked sharply at the panel. “You have an attribute assessment for Luke?”

PLAYER-ORIGIN BASELINE INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE WHERE RELEVANT.

“Show me.”

FULL PLAYER-ORIGIN ATTRIBUTE COMPARISON IS NOT CURRENTLY NECESSARY FOR INITIAL TUTORIAL COMPLETION.

“I did not ask if it was necessary.”

The System remained unmoved, and after several seconds I gave up trying to intimidate floating text. “Fine. Fourteen to eight.”

CURRENT PHYSICAL BODY DOES NOT RETAIN PLAYER-ORIGIN PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTE VALUES.

That was obvious enough from the evidence available below my neck, but hearing it stated still irritated me.

“I could bench more than my body weight.”

ACKNOWLEDGED

“I worked for that.”

ACKNOWLEDGED

“And now I have Might eight.”

YES

The interface highlighted several other numbers without being asked.

Agility 20

Coordination 24

Presence 28

Guile 22

Composure 25

Attunement 20

Control 18

I narrowed my eyes. “Are you trying to cheer me up with statistics?”

CONTEXTUAL COMPARISON PROVIDED.

“That is exactly what you’re doing.”

CURRENT BODY EXCEEDS PLAYER-ORIGIN PHYSICAL BASELINE IN MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE CATEGORIES.

“Not strength.”

CORRECT

I looked at Agility and Coordination again. Twenty and twenty-four were absurdly high compared with the baseline ranges I remembered, and the morning had already demonstrated what those numbers meant. I had nearly tangled myself in a gown immediately after arriving and somehow recovered without falling. I had crossed polished marble in heels while managing a tail I had possessed for less than an hour. I had curtsied without thinking and folded myself toward an untied shoe with a balance that should have required years of training.

My gaze dropped toward my bare feet. “Can I test Coordination without damaging anything?”

YES

“Suggestions?”

AVAILABLE SKILLS INCLUDE DANCE AND ACROBATICS.

That should have been obvious, so I stood and moved away from the desk, giving myself enough clear floor that an unexpected movement would not send me directly into expensive furniture. The gown complicated matters, but apparently not enough to prevent my feet from finding an easy position beneath me.

I lifted one foot and found balancing on the other required almost no effort. Raising the leg higher made no meaningful difference, so I extended it slowly behind me while leaning forward, expecting the familiar instability that came whenever I tried something requiring more balance than ordinary exercise had developed. Instead, my body adjusted continuously without requiring conscious correction. My ankle made tiny shifts against the carpet, my standing leg remained steady, and my tail moved behind me in exactly the direction necessary to counterbalance the change.

I held the position long enough to be sure it was not luck before straightening again. “That is weird.”

CURRENT COORDINATION: 24

“I saw the number.”

I tried a turn. My bare foot pivoted against the carpet while the gown flared around my legs, and I stopped after one rotation without stumbling. The sudden certainty that I could do more arrived before I consciously decided to test it, so I turned again, faster this time, and then twice in succession.

The room moved around me in a smooth blur while my head found the same point between rotations with practiced precision. I stopped exactly where I intended, skirts settling around my ankles while my tail curved behind me. I knew what spotting was because Luke understood the principle from watching dancers and from general human movement, but I had never been able to do that.

A delighted laugh escaped me as the absurd pleasure of the movement overtook the strangeness for a moment. “That was fucking cool.”

DANCE 13 — EXPERT CONTRIBUTED.

I tried one more turn simply because I could, then forced myself to stop before the experiment became an impromptu dance recital. My heart had accelerated slightly, but not from exertion so much as the sheer novelty of discovering something this body could do far better than the one I remembered.

The loss of strength still bothered me, but it no longer occupied the entire comparison. I returned to the desk and looked at the Social section again, where one number stood so far above the rest that it almost looked excessive even knowing exactly how I had designed Radiance.

“Presence twenty-eight seems obscene.”

CURRENT PRESENCE: 28

“Yes, I can read.”

VALUE REFLECTS CURRENT COMBINED CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT.

I remembered designing Radiance to dominate social encounters whenever possible. Charisma had been the entire point. Apparently that intention had translated into a number sufficiently high that even the System display made it look excessive beside almost everything else.

“What does Presence actually do?”

PRESENCE CONTRIBUTES TO PERSONAL IMPACT, SOCIAL FORCE, PERFORMANCE, PROJECTED AUTHORITY, ATTENTION CAPTURE, AND MULTIPLE RELATED EFFECTS.

That description was broad enough to encompass most of what Radiance had been built to accomplish in a room full of people, and I suspected I would understand it better after more than one court encounter. The Aetheric category was less familiar because those numbers had never corresponded to anything Luke possessed on Earth.

“Attunement, Reserve, Control.”

AETHERIC ATTRIBUTES GOVERN MULTIPLE FORMS OF MAGICAL PERCEPTION, CAPACITY, INTERACTION, AND EXECUTION. EXACT APPLICATION VARIES BY ABILITY.

“Reserve thirteen sounds low compared with Attunement twenty.”

RELATIVE ASSESSMENT DEPENDS ON CURRENT BUILD AND DEVELOPMENT.

“So I am better at connecting to magic than having a lot of magical fuel.”

ACCEPTABLE SIMPLIFICATION

“And Control eighteen?”

ABOVE AVERAGE.

That made the decision not to test Soulflame in my bedroom marginally easier to regret, but I maintained what little wisdom I had acquired in the last hour and closed Attributes before curiosity could reinterpret above average as permission to light something on fire.

The main Character sheet returned. Court Performer 3. Reluctant Crown Princess Rank I. Soulflame Bloodline Manifested Rank I. They were still the choices I remembered making, yet none of them felt like character creation anymore. Each category described something I had already experienced directly: the social fluency of the Class, the pressure and desire bound into the Background, and the very literal horns, tail, and magic tied to the Heritage.

For the first time, I understood why the System treated them differently. Class represented what I practiced and developed. Background grew through what my life demanded of me and what I did with those demands. Heritage was something intrinsic enough that it existed in my blood and body whether I understood it or not. The framework was almost certainly incomplete, but it was enough to keep the categories from feeling arbitrary.

“Do I have an overall level?”

MULTIPLE PROGRESSION TRACKS ARE MAINTAINED INDEPENDENTLY. CLASS LEVELS, BACKGROUND RANKS, HERITAGE RANKS, SKILLS, FEATURES, ATTRIBUTES, AND OTHER PROGRESSION SYSTEMS MAY ADVANCE THROUGH DIFFERENT METHODS.

“So no single number that means how powerful I am.”

NO SINGLE NUMBER FULLY REPRESENTS CURRENT CAPABILITY.

“Good. Those are usually misleading anyway.”

I looked through the tabs again. Inventory tempted me because I had barely explored what Radiance already owned, but I had enough experience with opening one interesting menu and losing half an hour to know better. Quests could wait for the same reason. Relationships could definitely wait because I did not particularly want the System assigning descriptions, categories, or anything else to my parents, Cassia, or Adrian while I was still adjusting to the fact that all three kinds of relationship now felt personally relevant.

The tutorial list remained open beside everything else. Identity had a checkmark, as did Safe Areas and Player-Origin Knowledge, while Advancement joined them a moment later. That left System Functions, Physical Persistence, and Injury and Death, and most of my earlier curiosity faded as soon as my eyes reached the last two.

The phrase Physical Persistence had bothered me from the moment I saw it, although I had successfully distracted myself with rewards, skills, attributes, magical storage, and the discovery that I could apparently spin like someone who had trained for it since childhood. None of those diversions changed the obvious question I had been avoiding since I regained unrestricted access to the word Ohio.

I lowered my gaze to the hands resting against the writing desk. They were small, pale, ringed, and nothing like Luke Thompson’s hands, yet they flexed when I wanted them to and carried sensations back to me as naturally as any hands I had ever possessed. There was no headset to remove, no monitor to shut down, no pain in my neck from sitting too long at the computer, and no sensation of another body waiting somewhere beyond this one.

I already knew what I was afraid the System was going to say, but knowing did not make asking easier. After several seconds, I flattened both palms against the desk and looked back at the tutorial.

“Physical Persistence.”
