Yu Wanzhi had planned to head to the countryside on the outskirts today, to buy seeds at the seed station. Since she could only buy a limited amount at a time, and she was too lazy to make multiple trips, she wanted to get everything done in one go. Country folk usually kept their own saved seeds, so she knew she’d definitely find what she needed there!
There was a bus directly from the military compound gates to the outskirts of the capital. As she stood at the stop waiting, the voice of the Big Carp suddenly rang in her mind.
“Ten meters to your left and behind you, four thugs are watching you. Twenty meters to your right, a sneaky woman is also watching you. Are you daft? They’re practically right beside you, and you haven’t the slightest sense of danger?”
“Hold still! Who told you to turn around? Do you not understand the concept of ‘stirring up trouble before you’re ready’? Did studying so hard in your past life turn your brain to mush?”
Yu Wanzhi rolled her eyes subtly and replied in her mind: “Don’t people usually do bad things at night? Who would expect someone to follow me in broad daylight? Alright alright, I get it now. Thanks for the heads-up, oh Great Carp~”
The Big Carp huffed. “You’d better be grateful. If it weren’t for me, you might’ve lost your life today — do you understand how serious that is?”
The girl and the carp bickered back and forth in their minds. Once she boarded the bus, Yu Wanzhi walked straight to the very back row. From there, she could keep everyone in sight. She pretended to gaze idly out the window, completely unaware, while from the corner of her eye she secretly studied the people the Carp had warned her about.
When she finally got a clear look, she couldn’t help sneering inwardly. Was Lin Jiaorui an idiot? Even though she was dressed in long sleeves and trousers, with a wide-brimmed hat pulled low over her face — they’d lived under the same roof for days! With that bulky, lumbering frame of hers, how could anyone fail to recognize her?
If she wanted to die so badly… fine. She’d grant her wish.
But Xiao Yunting had told her in her past life: if you’re going to do something, you must secure your escape route first. If she wanted these scoundrels to vanish without a trace, she had to plan every detail perfectly.
She couldn’t go to the countryside now. If anyone grew suspicious, the police would trace her movements — and she’d never be able to explain why she’d bought so many seeds…
Yu Wanzhi’s big, bright eyes twinkled. A sudden idea struck her, and a crafty, mischievous smile curved her lips — like a little fox that had stumbled upon a cave brimming with treasure. The woman sitting beside her stared, utterly captivated.
She’d heard the scenic Xiangshan District in the western suburbs was beautiful. Why not go up the mountain and enjoy the view? That was perfectly reasonable, wasn’t it?
And this bus just happened to be heading straight west. It must be fate!
After an hour of bumping along, the bus finally reached its stop. Yu Wanzhi stepped off — and the five sneaking figures behind her followed. Once the bus pulled away, they were all alone on that desolate, uninhabited mountainside.
Lin Jiaorui stopped pretending. She yanked off her hat, fanning herself, and shouted sharply: “Hahaha… you little hussy! Stop right there! Heaven is on my side! Even the universe guided you straight to this godforsaken wasteland!”
The four thugs also dropped all pretense and grinned lasciviously. “Heh heh — Miss Lin wasn’t lying. What a delicate, pretty little beauty. Today is our lucky day!”
“Never in my life have I seen such a stunning girl. Nobody else gets to go first — I’m claiming her!”
“Get lost! Why should you go first? Last time you got first dibs on that colleague of Miss Lin’s — it’s my turn now!”
“Miss Lin, make sure you take plenty of good photos for us! We want copies. I’m going to take them home and admire them under the covers all night!”
Warm breezes carried their filthy words straight to Yu Wanzhi’s ears. She lifted a hand and dug disgustedly at her ear, then looked at them with pure revulsion, a mocking smile playing at her lips. “Done playing pretend? Then come meet your doom!”
Before any of them could react, Yu Wanzhi gave a casual wave — and a chilling sight unfolded.
A massive, majestic white wolf appeared out of thin air right before them. Its eyes swept the area with sharp vigilance; catching a familiar scent nearby, it quickly settled into calm readiness.
“Bai Dashuai,” she commanded, “spare that ugly woman for later. See those four disgusting men? Pick the one you despise most. Tear him apart.”
Bai Dashuai — meaning “Handsome White General” — was the name she’d given him. His cub was called Bai Shaoshuai, “Little Handsome General”. Every night in the quiet hours, she’d enter her private space to spend time with them. Their bond was deep, and both mother and son obeyed her every word.
At her command, the great white wolf pricked up its ears. Baring a mouthful of gleaming, razor-sharp fangs, it advanced slowly toward them. Those pearly whites glinted coldly in the sunlight — terrifying enough to freeze anyone’s blood.
Nourished these past few days with water from the mountain stream, the wolf had fully regained its peak strength — even stronger than when it had run with its pack. Every hair gleamed like polished steel, standing proud and stiff. Its eyes shone like luminous gemstones, wild and brimming with lethal intent.
“Th-thump… h-help… stay back… don’t come any closer!” The thugs were paralyzed with terror, their teeth chattering uncontrollably.
Three of them collapsed trembling to the ground, their legs having turned to jelly.
The fourth managed to stay upright — but only for a couple seconds. A pungent, acrid stench suddenly wafted from his trousers and filled the air.
Lin Jiaorui’s face blanched as white as paper. She stood frozen like a soul-less puppet, cold sweat pouring down her forehead, great beads dripping and splashing silently on the earth.
Bai Dashuai caught the scent of urine instantly. He simply skirted the trembling man and shot forward like a bolt of lightning toward the nearest thug. In the blink of an eye, jaws clamped onto his arm — and the wolf gently but firmly dragged him off into the thick brush…
One bloodcurdling scream rang out. Then silence.
Then came the sickening, wet sound of crunching and chewing — echoing clearly in their ears.
That noise struck their hearts like a sledgehammer, blowing their terror sky-high.
“AAAH HELP! I DON’T WANT TO DIE — AAAHH!” One thug scrambled first, clawing his way forward on hands and knees. The other two snapped out of their stupor and crawled frantically after him, wetting themselves in pure panic.
Yu Wanzhi stood calmly, arms folded, idly inspecting her fingernails as she called out in a leisurely tone: “Run all you like — but the next one is next. You don’t honestly think two legs can outrun four, do you?”
