Yun Cheng had never thought Ye Cunshan would say such blunt, teasing, borderline suggestive things.

After hearing the two lines, his face went from pale to scarlet and he resented his own thin skin, how it flushed red at the slightest provocation.

He even felt guilty. When Ye Cunshan beckoned him over, he shuffled forward step by slow step.Full novel: The Time travelling husband is little Sweet — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

He didn’t dare confess what exactly he had done with the clothes but since during those two days of confinement he had stuffed the garment under his blanket and slept holding it, he gave a vague, hesitant nod.

Ye Cunshan stared at him, eyes restrained.

He had originally intended to spare him, to avoid scaring him.

But Yun Cheng, under that stare, grew frightened and mumbled a tiny confession: “I… I only wore it once…”

If Ye Cunshan held back any longer, he wouldn’t be a man.

He tossed the garment aside, reached out, pulled Yun Cheng into his arms by the back of his head and lowered his head to kiss him.

Yun Cheng’s waist was held firmly. His head rested against Ye Cunshan’s palm, with nowhere to escape. The kiss was fierce and deep, so overwhelming that Yun Cheng felt he might forget how to breathe.

In a dazed rush of thought, he realized,

So he hadn’t been glaring at him.

He’d been wanting to kiss him…

He reacted without realizing it and by the time Ye Cunshan scooped him up in his arms at the end, the shock nearly made Yun Cheng faint on the spot.

But just like the last time before leaving home, Ye Cunshan only tucked him back under the covers, pressing him firmly into the warm bedding. He brushed aside the small curls of hair sticking up on Yun Cheng’s forehead, his voice low and a little hoarse. “Sleep first. I need to step out for a bit.”

Yun Cheng showed more courage than last time and finally said something back. “Don’t glare at me anymore. I’m scared of it.”

Ye Cunshan almost stumbled and failed to leave at all after hearing that.

He pulled the blanket up to Yun Cheng’s eyes, covering those soft, watery apricot shaped eyes. “Don’t tempt me.”

Yun Cheng dragged the blanket back down and aimed four simple words at Ye Cunshan’s retreating back: “Running for his life.”

Then the heat that had been slow to spread finally surged up his spine, making his waist soften.

He felt something was absolutely not normal and pushed all the blame onto the mysterious constitution of a ge’er. Without thinking, he rubbed his stomach, then reached out from beneath the covers and pulled the discarded inner robe Ye Cunshan had thrown aside into his arms, warming himself with it.

Just tempting him.

Ye Qingyang was already waiting by the river bend. Seeing Ye Cunshan arrive so late, he didn’t bother asking why.

“I talked it over with Brother Wangzu. Tonight we’ll just paste a few copies of the wanted notice onto some of the houses.”

The cold wind along the way had scattered what little lingering heat Yun Cheng had stirred in Ye Cunshan earlier, leaving him calm again.

He held up the drawing draft under the faint light of the fire fold. In the pitch black night, the ghost messenger rendered in the illustration looked ten times more sinister.

Li Bansian’s thin face, usually carrying a slight smile, looked as though a mask had been peeled away. It was still him, the same features yet the eyes on the paper carried a gloom that seemed to seep from the page itself.

The slight lift of his lips felt wicked, like everyone he saw was someone he intended to harm.

Ye Cunshan let out a quiet sigh. “I’ve never seen this style of drawing even in the provincial city. If someone really made this on purpose, then who on earth did Li Dadao offend?”

Because of this, Da Valley Village had only released vague, sarcastic statements, not daring to name names and accuse Jinghe Village of false accusations.

The two villages were neighbors with generations of intermarriage. They knew each other well and knew no one in either village possessed this kind of artistic skill.

They talked as they walked.

“I only managed to copy two during the day,” Ye Qingyang said. “Plus the ones that mysterious person drew before, we have enough for four households. Liu Zhong, Liu Xiaocheng, Liu Erdan and Li Dadao’s home.”

These four included the village head, the clan elder’s son, a notorious troublemaker and Li Bansian’s family.

Ye Cunshan said, “Pasting the papers alone won’t be enough. They’ll just tear them down secretly. We need to cause a bit of noise at Liu Erdan’s place.”

That family was infamous in the area. They were slippery, shameless and known for taking advantage of everyone around them. Nobody had ever managed to take even a strand of hair from them in return.

Whether the drawings came from humans or ghosts, once this family laid eyes on them, they absolutely wouldn’t let it rest.

At night, Da Valley Village was no different from Jinghe Village, silent, with only the sound of the wind.

They walked along the river, pasting the notices one by one and finally reached Liu Erdan’s home.

Neither of them had any experience pretending to be ghosts. Ye Cunshan believed in brute force solving everything. After pressing the paper to the wall, he simply lifted his leg and kicked the door open.

The already broken door of the Liu household couldn’t withstand the impact, it crashed to the ground with a loud bang.

Ye Qingyang’s eyelid twitched. “…Do we have to pay for that?”

Ye Cunshan silently tossed two copper coins onto the ground amidst Liu Erdan’s loud curses inside the house.

Then the brothers crouched low and sprinted along the small paths out of the village, heading toward the mountain foot, then circling back toward Jinghe Village.

Ye Qingyang glanced back regretfully. Such a pity they couldn’t stay and watch the chaos unfold.

“Go home and sleep,” Ye Cunshan told him. “If your grandfather finds out what you did tonight, he’ll beat you.”

These days, even the emperor performed regular sacrifices and visited temples and monasteries.

Country folk took such matters seriously.

The older generation considered Li Bansian unlucky, children in the village who went to him always ended up being told they had terrible fates. They disliked him but never dared confront him, fearing they would offend some wandering spirit or deity if they didn’t get routines divined properly.

Their own generation, however, had a few bold ones who resisted quietly. They neither provoked Li Bansian nor believed in him.

They simply lacked the nerve of whoever had drawn the ghost messenger, daring to fight poison with poison.

At the village entrance, the two went their separate ways.

Ye Cunshan had already mentioned during dinner that he’d be visiting Ye Wangzu that night, so no one at home would question his absence.

Yun Cheng heard him return and quickly shut his eyes, pretending to sleep.

The rustling sounds of clothing being removed behind him scratched at his ears, making Yun Cheng’s heart slowly tighten. Inside his small chest, his heart thumped wildly and uncontrollably.

The kang bed was large and he was small, if he slid inward, he could leave nearly half the space for Ye Cunshan.

Once Ye Cunshan blew out the oil lamp and carefully lay down, he immediately heard the thunderous beating of Yun Cheng’s heart. He rolled over and wrapped an arm around Yun Cheng’s waist.

“You’re not asleep?”

There’s a saying, no one can wake a person who is pretending to sleep.

Ye Cunshan had no idea how many loops Yun Cheng’s thoughts had run during the short half hour he’d been gone.

He tried repeatedly to coax him into responding.

From “You think I don’t know you’re faking it?” to “If you don’t answer, I’m going to kiss you,” and finally his ultimate threat: “I’m chopping wood to make a bath bucket tomorrow. What size do you want?”

Yun Cheng’s eyes flew open instantly.

How had he never realized Ye Cunshan was this kind of person?!

“I want a big one,” Yun Cheng said without hesitation. “Big enough for me to lie down in!”

He wanted a proper bath. He wanted a whole tub to soak in.

He also worried that making the tub too large would make heating water troublesome later, so he compromised softly. “A smaller one is fine too… as long as I can at least crouch inside it?”

That tone, so pitiful it could melt iron.

Ye Cunshan replied, “It’s fine to make it larger. I’ll build it first. Later, when we start making paper, won’t we need to boil bark every day? We’ll constantly be burning firewood. It’d be a waste not to use the fire for heating water too. When the time comes, we’ll see if we can move down the mountain and build a house. We can construct it like a heated kang bed, lay stones underneath and dig a pit beneath it.”

If both sides connected, then whenever the stove was burning over there, the water on this side would warm up too.

As Yun Cheng listened, his eyes shone brightly. “Wouldn’t that be like… taking a hot spring every day?”

“More or less.”

His little ge’er was so delicate, what could he do but spoil him?

They wouldn’t need to worry about selling the paper. At worst, it would always bring in enough to support the two of them.

And Ye Cunshan wasn’t a stingy person to begin with. Since all these ideas came from Yun Cheng, it was only natural he treated him even more generously.

“We should build it near the riverbank. Easier to fetch water that way.”

Yun Cheng’s family home was right beside the river. It depended on what he wanted.

A house left empty for too long slowly fell into disrepair.

And now that the two of them lived there together, it also felt cramped.

Yun Cheng said, “Why don’t we build it right next to the house? Make a little courtyard and enclose everything together.”

Ye Cunshan agreed without hesitation. “Fine. Tomorrow I’ll ask the clan leader to assign us a plot.”

Yun Cheng’s heart tightened seeing him come home only to busy himself again. Quietly, he pulled the robe he’d been hugging to warm himself and tucked it under his pillow, not wanting to tease him anymore.

Ye Cunshan pretended he didn’t notice the little action. If he teased too much, he might not get to hold Yun Cheng while sleeping tonight.

They continued discussing the house.

The winter ground was frozen, making building difficult.

Ye Cunshan also wanted to save a bit more silver. If possible, he wanted to build a proper brick and tile house, something sturdy enough to last decades. A home like that couldn’t be thrown together carelessly.

So this year, they would still stay on the mountain. The kang bed also needed to be rebuilt by someone skilled.

Before dawn, when even the rooster crowed lazily, Ye Cunshan was already up, tidying his things and preparing the gifts he’d brought back.

He had bought five books and including the one he originally carried out, there were six in total. These he planned to divide with Ye Yan so they could read and exchange.

He had also bought three boxes of face cream. For Cun Yin’s share, Ye Cunshan passed one to Yun Cheng. “I heard you two have been getting along well lately?”

For Yun Cheng, he had both hand balm and face cream.

The hand balm was something Yun Cheng had once asked for, back when he was dreaming aloud about earning money through embroidery and finally living the kind of life where he could eat meat every day.

His only request then had been for a jar of balm, to keep his hands smooth so he could handle finer embroidery work.

But Ye Cunshan had been drunk at the time and remembered Yun Cheng’s words in the wrong way, he only recalled “If I still take embroidery work, then buy it for me.” Since the shopkeeper had given no new commissions that day, he kept buying other things and completely forgot the balm.

Now so much time had passed, he had gone all the way to the provincial city and back. It felt awkward to bring up the old incident again.

Yun Cheng remembered, though. He lowered his eyes, hiding the shy delight flickering within them. His heart warmed sweetly.

As for the box of broken jade, Ye Cunshan brought it home exactly the way he had taken it out.

He told Yun Cheng what the craftsman had said. “When we have the chance to go to the capital in the future, we’ll see if we can find a better artisan to repair it.”

Yun Cheng nodded obediently. “Then you have to study hard. I’ll wait for you to take me to the capital.”

Ye Cunshan laughed lightly. “Alright. When we go to the capital, I’ll take you everywhere, eat good food, walk around, see the sights.”

When his hand brushed over the wooden hairpin, he discreetly hid the one meant for Yun Cheng and handed the floral hairpin for Cun Yin to him instead. For now, these were the only gifts.

After breakfast, everyone went back to their respective work.

Liu Yun went early to relieve Ye Wangzu and brought him egg pancakes, fish head soup and a pot of rice fragrant crispy porridge.

The next step in papermaking was cleaning and they needed to wait for the bark to cool before handling it, so they had time to eat.

Yun Cheng didn’t go up the mountain immediately. First he brought the face cream, the floral hairpin and the wool gloves he had knitted over the last two days to Cun Yin.

The child was only eleven, huffing and puffing through wool cleaning and every little task.

Since he and Ye Cunshan were adults, they didn’t urgently need new gloves, so Yun Cheng knitted Cun Yin’s pair first.

The gloves took inspiration from modern fingerless designs, five fingers exposed so they wouldn’t interfere with work and a little knitted flap on the back that could be folded down to cover the fingers when resting.

The button was made using qipao frog button style, sturdy enough to hold.

The wool wasn’t dyed and pure white looked too plain. So Yun Cheng put most of his effort into the button, a little gold ingot shape.

When he gave them, Cun Yin tried them on right away, spinning in place with delight.

“Thank you, big sister in law! You’re the best! These are made of wool? They’re so pretty! Next time you knit something, call me! I want to learn too!”

And of course, he couldn’t resist throwing shade at his older brother. “Not like my brother, I heard he came back yesterday but he hasn’t come to see me yet!”

Yun Cheng pointed at the face cream and hairpin in the boy’s hands. “Didn’t he buy those for you?”

Cun Yin snorted. “That’s because he’s your man.”

Yun Cheng burst out laughing but couldn’t withstand such teasing for long, his cheeks turned rosy red.

He still needed to climb the mountain today, so after delivering the gifts, he didn’t linger. Just as he turned to leave, Ye Da called out to him.

Truthfully, among all of Ye Cunshan’s relatives, Yun Cheng only enjoyed talking to Cun Yin.

The others, even accounting for the times, were far too cold toward the eldest son.

They were warm only when they met him; if they didn’t see him, they acted like they couldn’t care less.

Yun Cheng sighed inwardly.

A pity, one couldn’t throw away one’s father.

Ye Da could read his expression and immediately understood that Yun Cheng didn’t want to talk to him.

He thought to himself that Yun Cheng hid it deep, this was the same timid, shy child from before yet now he dared show attitude to his father in law.

He asked what Ye Cunshan was doing and why he hadn’t come home. “He goes out and doesn’t even come back to see his parents.”

Yun Cheng was confused. “Weren’t you the one who told him not to come home? You said he shouldn’t come back.”

Village men had thick skin; Ye Da held his stiff expression and ignored the jab. “Just tell me what he’s doing.”

Yun Cheng didn’t know much about the kang bed construction, so he said honestly, “He might be looking for someone to help rebuild the kang.”

Ye Da only needed to think with his toes to guess who that would be.

Most likely his second uncle, his own cousin!

His son had been away doing business. He and Chen Jinhua stayed home the whole time.

Because once Ye Cunshan had a spouse, he moved out and his spouse refused to stay in the in-laws’ house, insisting on living with relatives.

That was fine but even when his son returned home, he went back to that relative’s house with his spouse.

On top of that, gossip had circulated for years, people saying that a scholarly son shouldn’t have been born to Ye Da at all.

Piecing everything together, Ye Da’s anxiety had grown.

And he had reason to be anxious.

A cursed kin fate, who knew when it would strike?

He had raised Ye Cunshan for nearly twenty years. As his eldest son, he had never caused misfortune before.

And then there was Cun Yin, who was a ge’er. He would marry out eventually and even if he took a husband instead, that husband would still be a ge’er.

The child Chen Jinhua carried, who knew what they would be born as?

If it turned out to be another daughter or ge’er, then the only person who could one day provide funeral rites for him would be Ye Cunshan.

The two elders in the house were still alive and he couldn’t make decisions on his own.

When he brought it up, the elders didn’t care. They only said Ye Cunshan was filial and would never abandon them.

Which meant Ye Da was the one they didn’t trust.

Whether Ye Cunshan cared for him was a separate matter entirely.

Ye Da was furious but didn’t dare show it.

He huffed, “Why look for others to build the kang? I can do it. I’ll help you.”

Yun Cheng: ???

Before he could react, Ye Da dashed off like the wind.

Cun Yin curled his lip. “Ignore him. He’s just idle. When spring comes and the fields get busy again, he’ll stop acting like this.”

Meanwhile, Ye Cunshan was chatting with Ye Yan.

He had brought all the books and asked Ye Yan to pick two to copy first. They could exchange later.

He also handed over the face cream and hairpin for Ye Yan to give to his wife.

He hadn’t carved any words on this hairpin.

Ye Yan accepted everything without fuss and updated him on Yun Cheng’s studies.

“He’s very talented. He was really delayed before.”

Otherwise, even as a ge’er, if he could read and write, the village would treat him with more respect.

Naming children, writing couplets for New Year, reading and writing letters, these small jobs brought in coins. People who could do these things never lived too miserably.

But in his original family’s situation, even if they discovered his talent, they would never have been able to send him to school.

A softness rose in Ye Cunshan’s eyes. “It’s alright. He wants to learn, so I’ll teach him. He’ll catch up to a normal scholar eventually.”

He was packing up to leave when he suddenly heard his father’s voice.

After asking around, he learned that his father had come to help him rebuild the kang.

Ye Cunshan hadn’t planned on asking anyone for help, paper making was in full swing uphill and it wasn’t convenient.

But Ye Da insisted. “What, you look down on your old man now?”

Ye Cunshan figured there was no harm letting him work if he wanted to.

“Cut down a tree for me then. I need wood for a bath barrel.”

Ye Da returned home to fetch an axe and headed straight into the woods.

They had enough material for the kang bed and Ye Da was skilled at the work. By noon, it was finished.

Meanwhile, Liu Yun had thoroughly cleaned the tree bark and for the pounding step, they had called Ye Hu for help.

Ye Hu was straightforward and rough around the edges but quick to correct himself.

Last time when repairing the roof, he had ordered Yun Cheng around endlessly. This time, while pounding bark, he explained himself.

He had assumed the items Yun Cheng took from Second Uncle Ye’s house belonged to that household, only later did he learn they were things Ye Cunshan had bought, simply not carried back all at once.

Yun Cheng didn’t take offense. Smiling softly, he handed him a cup of water, making Ye Hu work even harder.

When Ye Cunshan came outside and saw this, he realized Yun Cheng used the same pampering tactics on everyone. He called out, “Come here and bring me a cup of water too.”

Yun Cheng couldn’t help laughing at his jealous tone. He added a cube of sugar into the cup and drank the sweet, warm liquid slowly.

After pounding the bark clean, the next step was chopping and grinding it into pulp.

Seeing nothing amiss with the process, Yun Cheng began telling Ye Cunshan about the method of papermaking using bamboo.

Their area had an abundance of bamboo and during this season they could even dig up winter shoots to eat.

Papermaking with bamboo was far more sustainable, wouldn’t damage the local vegetation but the process took much longer from start to finish.

He discussed it with Ye Cunshan. “Our workshop is small. The output won’t be large no matter what. We can also put out word for people to bring in their old scrap paper and exchange it for new sheets. After half a year of transition, we can slowly replace all tree bark paper with bamboo paper.”

They lived off the mountains, taking what the mountains could provide but they never hunted young animals and never cut trees that were too small. With that logic, Ye Cunshan quickly agreed.

He also asked Yun Cheng’s opinion regarding letting villagers come to help with the papermaking. “Those who obviously bullied your family before, I definitely won’t let them come. Wangzu will also help persuade the clan head.”

It wasn’t realistic to ban the entire village from participating, nor to allow only a few households.

When wealth disparity opened up, envy would inevitably brew and someone would eventually stir up trouble.

The clan head didn’t want to see that. If conflict erupted, then none of them would be able to continue papermaking anyway.

Yun Cheng thought for a moment. “Don’t let my uncle or aunt come and those few ruffians who used to cling to me, they absolutely must not be allowed in.”

Everyone else, he left for Ye Cunshan to decide.

When the pulp grinding ended, Ye Cunshan scooped the mixture into a wooden basin and carried it straight to Second Uncle Ye’s house.

Their courtyard was spacious, located at the village entrance with plenty of open ground in front.

Based on previous years’ winter weather, alternating between a sunny day and a rainy day was normal. That afternoon, with everyone working together, they finished pulling and drying a full batch of paper.

In the household of the third brother, Ye Yong, another empty courtyard served as extra space. Ye Cunshan and Uncle Ye set up thin bamboo poles and once night fell, they took all the bamboo screens pasted with wet sheets inside and hung them up neatly.

When Ye Wangzu visited that evening to check on the situation, he learned, to his surprise, that they had completed an entire day’s workload.

Ye Cunshan said that tomorrow they would fish out the other bundle of bark and prepare it the same way and he would take the night shift. “You join during the daytime and follow the steps once. You should get the hang of it after one run.”

The process was straightforward, only the sheet pulling required delicate hands; an unsteady grip or wrong estimate of weight could easily ruin the batch.

After they finished discussing this, Ye Wangzu asked if he had heard anything about Dagugu Village’s reaction.

Having been busy all day, with no chance to meet Qingyang, Ye Cunshan naturally had no idea.

The two stood inside the drying room. Lowering his voice, Ye Wangzu told him, “They argued nonstop today.”

Even though the drawings on the notices were deemed man made, no one could figure out who painted them.

This time, only four copies had been posted. When one looked at the targeted households, it was obvious, whoever was behind it had planned things thoroughly.

When one side hid in the shadows while the other stood in the open, many would naturally fear being implicated.

Liu Erdan, in particular, refused to let the matter go.

Li Daodao’s compensation wasn’t enough to cover even the cost of fixing the door. Liu Erdan immediately slapped a big hat on him, saying if this wasn’t resolved, “If they can kick down your door today, they can stand by your bed with a kitchen knife tomorrow.”

If his household was the first to suffer, who would be next?

Li Bansian had spent years telling fortunes, earning money through “fate changing rituals.” Among all the families, only the butcher Liu from Xiaoyang Village had ever received a good life reading; everyone else got their “lucky ones” squeezed out between his fingers.

So when chaos broke out, people who had long held grudges jumped in to fan the flames.

As a fortune teller, Li Daodao (he’s also called Li Bansian) knew exactly how much influence his readings had on people. He also knew that if he had pushed someone too far with a false reading, that person might really show up by his bed with a knife, ready to slit his throat.

But he truly could not think of who would do something like this. He was sweating through his clothes from anxiety.

Village head Liu Zhong told him to think carefully. “They only gave you five days.”

Ye Wangzu gently patted Ye Cunshan’s shoulder. “I’m guessing he’ll start with you, so tomorrow morning I’ll have Uncle Liang run to Weixian and bring back a doctor. If your stepmother feels unwell, we’ll send the doctor directly over.”

There was reason to believe the interrogation would begin with Ye Cunshan.

His fate reading had resulted in him being expelled from his family. From a wealthy family’s firstborn son, he had become a poor man with no land and no fields.

Forget continuing his studies for the imperial exam, he now struggled even to feed himself.

Compared to others who received bad readings, those people at least still had a buffer. Their current lives remained intact. Only Ye Cunshan had been struck severely enough that his future was cut off entirely.

And unfortunately for them, Ye Cunshan had never been someone easy to push around.

He frowned. “Fine. I’ll keep a close watch tomorrow.”

After sending Wangzu off, he returned inside.

Yun Cheng was seated beneath the lamp, clutching his copy of The Three Character Classic, reviewing his lesson. He hadn’t written a single character all day, so he was afraid he might forget. Reading before bed had become his routine.

Ye Cunshan asked him to recite a few lines and Yun Cheng did so obediently.

He had modern habits, his intonation rose at the end of one line and dipped for the next, creating a rhythmic, catchy cadence.

Ye Cunshan praised him twice, then produced the hairpin he had prepared for Yun Cheng. Before giving it, he asked, “Have you learned to write your name yet?”

Yun Cheng shook his head.

“What about mine?” Ye Cunshan asked again.

Another shake.

Since he hadn’t asked Yan to teach him either, after all, Ye Cunshan had only guided him through two pages before, so he relaxed and handed the hairpin over. “It’s yours.”

Yun Cheng had thought he wouldn’t actually give it. Taking the hairpin with delight, he examined it carefully. At the tail of the carved flower, he spotted three tiny characters: “Cun Duo Yun” which means “Yun curling on the tip of his heart”

His face instantly flushed. Ye Xiao Shan, you really know how to coax people.

No wonder he’d asked about his studies beforehand.

He probably even consulted Ye Yan today, right?

Understanding his intention, Yun Cheng cooperated smoothly. “What are the characters you carved?”

Without blinking, Ye Cunshan answered, “Jiaoqi Bao.” which means “Little delicate crybaby.”

Yun Cheng’s smile froze. “What?”

Ye Cunshan repeated it calmly.

Yun Cheng could hardly believe his ears. “I only know a few characters, don’t lie to me.”

Ye Cunshan even chuckled. “Just say whether I’m right.”

Yun Cheng: “…”

If you keep this up, you’re going to lose your wife.

Still smiling sweetly, he put the hairpin away, portraying the perfect image of a “little illiterate spouse” who was thrilled by the gift.
