When it was time for the shift change, Dr. Pan came over.

His complexion still didn’t look very good, and he had a slight fever.

“Dr. Pan, you stay here and watch the emergency department. I’ll go help with the medical examinations.”Full novel: The Tough Commander & His Feisty Military Doctor: Separate Rooms on Their Wedding Night! — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Dr. Pan shook his head. “You already covered my shift last night. How could I let you do that?”

“There weren’t many patients last night. I even slept under a blanket.”

Dr. Pan didn’t believe her. “Stop lying to me. All the family members know that the doctors were examining the soldiers during the day, so they all held off on coming to see a doctor. They couldn’t take it anymore by nighttime, so they came rushing in all at once.”

The nurse on duty testified, “Dr. Xu really isn’t lying. There was only one patient with diarrhea last night. Dr. Xu didn’t even wake us up. She let us sleep well.”

Dr. Pan was speechless. “What kind of damn luck is that?!”

The nurses laughed. “From now on, we’re going to work night shifts with Dr. Xu and get some of her good luck.”

Seeing that the atmosphere between the two doctors had eased, the nurses grew bolder and started joking around.

The atmosphere in the emergency department became much more harmonious.

“Then I’ll stay here and take the shift today.”

Dr. Pan didn’t force himself to act tough either. He prescribed himself an antipyretic injection and then perked himself up to watch over the emergency department.

When Wang Shu saw that Xu You had also come to have her blood drawn, she quickly called her over to sit beside her.

Wang Shu whispered, “Girl, you’re in luck! I already asked around. Today it’s the Third Regiment coming for blood tests. You might even get to see your man’s muscles. Just be careful not to stare until your eyes go straight.”

Xu You whispered back, “How could it be that coincidental? There’s no way I’ll happen to be assigned to his group.”

A whistle sounded.

The soldiers of the Third Regiment lined up in neat rows.

To make the examinations easier, all the soldiers were wearing army-green undershirts. Looking across the line, all Xu You could see were rows of strong, muscular bodies.

“So? Spectacular, right?”

Xu You nodded honestly. “They’re certainly pleasing to look at.”

Wang Shu was delighted. She knew it! Her best friend had the same taste in men as she did!

Once the young soldiers had lined up, the two women returned to their serious expressions.

Xu You had been trained in general surgery, and since this was also her first day drawing blood, her movements were much faster than everyone else’s.

After finishing her row, President Yang brought another group of people over for her to examine—the leaders, with Regiment Commander Shen Xu at the front.

“Oh, look at that. Qing Song’s fiancée is drawing our blood.”

Several battalion commanders pushed Chen Qing Song to the front, placing him directly ahead of Shen Xu.

The battalion commanders began teasing him.

“Qing Song, with your fiancée drawing your blood, will she be a little gentler with you?”

Chen Qing Song laughed. “What nonsense are you talking about? My Dr. Xu treats all the soldiers as warmly as spring.”

Xu You smiled and gestured for Chen Qing Song to let her tie the tourniquet around his arm. Within half a minute, she had moved on to the next person.

Chen Qing Song didn’t disturb Xu You while she was working. He efficiently got up and gave his place to Shen Xu.

Shen Xu sat down and extended his arm.

Xu You raised her eyebrows almost imperceptibly.

Tsk. Last time, he had completely ignored her attempt to hold his hand. This time, he had fallen right into her hands.

Xu You’s slightly cool fingers touched Shen Xu’s elbow joint, and Shen Xu frowned.

Xu You quickly placed her fist in his palm.

“Make a fist, like this.”

Shen Xu reacted instinctively and immediately closed his hand around Xu You’s fist.

The moment he realized what he had done, he let go as if he had been burned.

Standing behind Shen Xu, Fang Zhiyang was so frightened that he nearly lost his soul. He hurriedly looked around, afraid someone else had seen what had just happened.

Xu You abruptly looked up at Shen Xu.

That enveloping sensation…

It felt just like the hands of that mysterious man.

Shen Xu stared at Xu You with dark, unreadable eyes.

Xu You suppressed the shock in her heart.

“Hold it tight.”

She then tied the tourniquet above Shen Xu’s elbow and efficiently drew his blood.

After Fang Zhiyang finished having his blood drawn, he caught up with Shen Xu.

He lowered his voice. “You’ve got some nerve! In broad daylight, you actually held Dr. Xu’s hand. Were you afraid no one would see?”

Shen Xu frowned irritably. “Is it possible that she was the one harassing me?”

“Are you kidding? She has a fiancé! Battalion Commander Chen is gentle and considerate. Why would Dr. Xu ever take a liking to an unromantic man like you?

“And I clearly saw it. Dr. Xu was only demonstrating what to do, and you grabbed her fist. Last time, you were even staring at her while she was bathing.”

The more Fang Zhiyang talked, the more outrageous he became. Shen Xu lifted his leg and kicked him.

“Get lost.”

Shen Xu recalled the expression on Xu You’s face.

She really had looked shocked.

She hadn’t looked like she was trying to seduce him at all.

Just as Shen Xu returned to his office, Chen Qing Song came over to submit the forms for the upcoming military competition.

“No need to stand. Sit wherever you like.”

Chen Qing Song sat across from Shen Xu and stared at him.

Ever since learning that Shen Xu had used his name to send food to Xu You, this was the first time the two men had been alone together.

Shen Xu tapped the desk, signaling Chen Qing Song to come back to his senses.

“You’ve signed up for both the individual and team competitions this year as well. Based on your performance in previous competitions, I personally suggest that you only participate in one.”

Chen Qing Song naturally knew that entering only one event would help him concentrate his efforts. He shamelessly asked, “Commander, are you participating this year?”

“Yes. Both.”

Chen Qing Song sighed. “With the commander participating, my hopes of winning the championship are going to disappear again.”

Shen Xu frowned. “Don’t set your sights too far ahead. Focus on the next three steps in front of you. Try to perform better than you did last year. Any improvement is still progress.”

Chen Qing Song looked somewhat embarrassed.

Last year, he hadn’t even managed to make the top three in the entire military.

Shen Xu said, “You can think it over carefully these next two days. Give me your decision the day after tomorrow.”

Chen Qing Song nodded.

Shen Xu continued, “There’s one more thing. A couple of days ago, I saw Comrade Xu fetching water by herself. She nearly fell into the well.”

Chen Qing Song never expected Shen Xu to bring up Xu You with him.

Since that was the case, he might as well make things a little clearer.

“Commander, we’re already preparing to get married. Once the medical examinations are finished, we’ll submit our marriage application. When the time comes, I hope you won’t block it.”

Shen Xu frowned.

What was wrong with Chen Qing Song?

Did he think he couldn’t take care of his fiancée until they were married?

He hadn’t realized that Chen Qing Song was such a rigid, old-fashioned man.

“I understand. I’ll handle it according to procedure.”

Chen Qing Song breathed a sigh of relief. He didn’t want to have a conflict with his immediate superior either.

After Chen Qing Song left, Shen Xu rubbed his temples.

He had actually criticized Comrade Xu You for casually making jokes and not taking relationships seriously, accusing her of letting down Chen Qing Song’s sincere feelings.

But now, after hearing that his fiancée had nearly fallen into a well, Chen Qing Song hadn’t shown the slightest concern. All he cared about was getting married.

And that idiot Fang Zhiyang was blind too. What exactly was so great about a man like Chen Qing Song that made him better than Shen Xu?!

If Shen Xu had a fiancée, he would make sure to fetch her a bucket full of water every single day.
