“Cough, cough.” Lu Mingyuan choked, coughing.

Blushing, he pushed the person in his arms away and pinched her cheek firmly. “Be good, don’t worry. This trip to the capital will definitely cure you. Take your medicine and get a good night’s sleep.”

He pressed down on the girl’s shoulders, making her lie down.Full novel: The ‘Ugly’ Girl of the 70s is Too Tempting: Two Big Shots are Fighting Over Her — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Suddenly, a loud female voice rang out at the door. “Young lady, what serious illness do you have? Can you tell us about it? How did it get to the point of divorce?”

A woman carrying a burlap sack stood at the doorway, looking at Su Nuannuan with pity.

She was large in stature and carried a big bag, standing in the narrow aisle and blocking others who could only stand behind her.

Those blocked were initially angry, but now, hearing her question, curiosity arose, and they craned their necks to look into the compartment.

“That’s right, miss. Many hands make light work. If you have any difficulties, just tell us, and we’ll all help you think of a solution.”

The woman took the opportunity to take a few steps into the compartment, looking at Su Nuannuan with concern. “I know a bit of medicine. If you don’t mind, I can take a look at you. No charge.”

Su Nuannuan’s eyes lit up. She grabbed the woman’s hand like a lifeline, her fingertips brushing over the woman’s palm. When she felt a hard object, a dark glint flashed in her eyes.

On the surface, she remained calm, crying excitedly, “Really? You really know medicine? I wouldn’t mind, how could I possibly mind?”

“It’s just that I’ve seen many doctors for this illness, and they all said there’s no cure. You… can you really help?”

She leaned into Lu Mingyuan’s arms as if disheartened, writing a character on his abdomen with her finger.

Lu Mingyuan patted her shoulder. “As long as there’s hope, we can’t give up. How about this, ma’am, could you come with us to the dining car? It’s not very convenient here.”

The woman’s eyes flickered, and she smiled. “It’s fine, no trouble. It’s just taking your pulse; it’ll be quick.”

Su Nuannuan lowered her head shyly. “My… my illness is different. I need to take off my clothes for the examination…”

Lu Mingyuan sighed. “If it’s too much trouble for you, ma’am, then forget it. We won’t force you.”

“No trouble, no trouble. Come on, miss, let me take a look at you.” The woman hurriedly said.

Su Nuannuan and Lu Mingyuan exchanged a glance.

The three of them went to the dining car together.

Impatience flashed in the woman’s eyes as she urged, “How do you want to do this?”

“Here, ma’am, look…” Su Nuannuan unbuttoned her clothes. Beneath her delicate collarbone, her fair skin and jade-like bones were revealed, with a cleavage that made one dizzy.

“Where? Let me see.” The woman swallowed her saliva. What an alluring body, no wonder she could make that man risk his life for her. She leaned in closer.

Lu Mingyuan stood behind her and delivered a swift chop to the back of her neck. The woman widened her eyes in shock and collapsed limply.

Su Nuannuan let out a long sigh of relief, calmly buttoning up her clothes. She asked with a half-smile, “You trust me so much? Aren’t you afraid you hit the wrong person?”

Lu Mingyuan crouched down and began searching the woman. “In critical times, it’s better to kill by mistake than to let someone go.”

His movements paused, and a smile spread in his peach-blossom eyes. “Besides, you wouldn’t be wrong.”

The weapon was found—a disassembled gun.

Lu Mingyuan gestured to the people behind him and ordered coldly, “Take her away secretly. Don’t let any news leak.”

“Yes.”

Several plainclothes officers slipped in, moving like the wind. They pulled out ropes and swiftly tied the woman up.

The others looked at Su Nuannuan curiously, winking at Lu Mingyuan. “Captain Lu, is this really your wife? She’s sharp enough to catch someone so easily. Impressive.”

“Sister-in-law, you’re amazing!” several men shouted in unison.

Lu Mingyuan’s face darkened, and he kicked out at them. “Get out and get to work.”

“Alright, got it. Goodbye, sister-in-law!” The men waved cheerfully at Su Nuannuan, grabbing the enemy spy and running off faster than rabbits.

Su Nuannuan raised an eyebrow. “Your soldiers? Quite lively.”

Lu Mingyuan rubbed the tip of his nose. “Don’t mind them. Now we need to think about how to handle this situation. Those people wouldn’t send just one assassin; there must be accomplices. We can’t alert them now.”

“That’s simple.”

Su Nuannuan tousled her hair, pulled open her collar, and looked at Lu Mingyuan with her bright black eyes. “Ready? I’m about to start. Remember to play along later.”

With that, she covered her face and ran out.

The people gathered outside were startled. “What happened? Why is she running out crying after seeing the doctor?”

“Miss, don’t run! Does that woman even know how to practice medicine?”

Su Nuannuan was stopped by someone. She lifted her tear-reddened eyes, crying pitifully. “I… I… sob… I don’t want to live anymore. She actually… actually wanted to remove my uterus… sob…”

The crowd erupted in shock.

“What? Remove the uterus? Can a person even live without a uterus?”

“Why would she remove someone’s uterus for no reason? Isn’t that playing with human life?”

Su Nuannuan covered her face, sobbing and trembling all over as if she had suffered a great fright. Her face was deathly pale, devoid of any color. “She was holding a knife, walking… walking toward me… I was so scared, I threw something at her and ran out… sob…”

Her slender body swayed, and her crying suddenly stopped. As if overwhelmed by fear, she fainted on the spot.

The crowd gasped in alarm.

Suddenly, a tall figure darted out, his long arm wrapping around her waist.

His handsome face was filled with concern. “Nuannuan, are you okay? Don’t scare me.”

The person in his arms remained motionless, her breathing so faint it seemed as if she had truly fainted.

It looked so real—her lips were tinged with purple, her face pale as if transparent. The fragile woman resembled a flower ravaged by a storm, barely clinging to life.

For no apparent reason, Lu Mingyuan’s heart tightened. With a cold expression, he scooped her up in his arms. “Make way.”

The crowd hurriedly cleared a path, staring blankly as they walked away.

Hidden among the crowd, a few individuals glared with sinister eyes.

Number Thirty-Eight was truly an idiot. Why didn’t he coordinate with them before acting? How dare he take matters into his own hands and fail?

They exchanged subtle hand signals and quietly retreated.

The woman never reappeared. Everyone assumed she had run away in fear, and no one bothered to care about a stranger.

Lu Mingyuan carried Su Nuannuan back to the private room in a hurry, laying her on the bed. He chuckled softly and whispered in her ear, “Alright, no one’s here anymore. You can open your eyes.”

The person on the bed showed no response.

Her breathing was faint, like a kite about to snap.

Lu Mingyuan’s brows furrowed deeply. He shook her shoulders firmly. “Su Nuannuan, wake up.”

Still, there was no reaction.

The System hopped angrily in mid-air, fuming and cursing.

【Su Nuannuan, you’re truly insane, even using your own illness like this. Are you really not afraid of dying?】

【Crazy woman, if you die, what am I supposed to do?】

【Ahhh…】

【Fine, consider this a debt I owe you. You better remember to pay it back!】

Its chubby pig-like hoof pointed at her, and a brilliant light shot into Su Nuannuan’s forehead. Her faintly rising chest began to heave violently, and a slight flush appeared on her pale face.

But she still hadn’t woken up.

Lu Mingyuan sensed something was wrong, his face dark and stern. He took a deep look at the person on the bed before turning and striding away.

When he returned, he was followed by a young male doctor in a white coat carrying a medical kit.

The doctor took out a stethoscope and placed it over Su Nuannuan’s chest. After listening for a moment, he sighed and shook his head, removing the stethoscope and holding it in his hand, his expression grave.

Lu Mingyuan asked anxiously, “How is she?”

The doctor shook his head. “Not well.”
