The twelfth bell tolled across the Lantern District, signaling the end of the Velvet Hearth’s primary evening shift.

The low, throbbing music in the public lounge faded.

The heavy mahogany front doors were locked and bolted by Gorren, sealing out the damp winter air.Full novel: The Velvet Hearth: I Inherited a Monster Brothel — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The chaotic energy of the house settled into a thick, muffled quiet, broken only by the occasional creak of floorboards on the upper levels or the soft murmur of voices behind the heavy oak doors of the private suites.

Aric stood alone in the front office.

Only a single oil lamp burned on his desk.

He looked at the stack of evening ledgers, the ink still wet on the top page.

His provincial instincts screamed at him to stay in the chair, to spend the next two hours running the nightly tallies and cross-referencing the cellar inventory.

The ledgers were safe.

The ledgers did not possess ancient ice magic, and they did not know what his mother looked like naked.

Leave the ledgers in your office, Vaelisse had ordered.

Aric let out a long, unsteady breath.

He capped his inkwell, blew out the lamp, and walked out of the office, locking the door behind him.

He climbed the carpeted stairs to the second floor, his heart hammering a heavy, erratic rhythm against his bruised ribs.

He walked past Room Three, which was thankfully silent tonight, and made his way to the far end of the corridor.

Suite One was the largest on the floor.

It possessed a reinforced double door of dark, polished ironwood, adorned with a silver numeral plate.

Aric stopped in front of it, wiped his damp palms on his wool trousers, and knocked twice.

“Enter,” a cool voice called from within.

Aric pushed the heavy door open and stepped inside.

He immediately felt the temperature drop.

While the rest of the second floor was kept sweltering to accommodate the companions, Suite One was perfectly, crisply chilled.

The air smelled sharply of mint and crushed winterbloom.

The suite did not look like a brothel bedroom.

It looked like the private chambers of an aristocratic estate.

Thick, snow-white fur rugs covered the dark hardwood floor.

The walls were draped in heavy silver velvet, and the massive, four-poster bed was hidden behind sheer silk curtains.

In the center of the room, a small, circular dining table had been set for two with polished silver cutlery and fine crystal glasses.

Vaelisse stood near the hearth, where a cluster of blue-white alchemical flames burned without producing any actual heat.

She had changed for dinner.

She wore a backless gown of liquid silver silk that clung to every curve of her tall, flawless frame.

The fabric pooled around her bare feet.

Her white hair was swept up into an elegant, complicated twist, exposing the long, pale line of her neck.

She turned to look at him, her gray eyes sweeping over his clean linen shirt and standard wool trousers.

“The tailored coat has not arrived yet,” Aric said defensively, standing stiffly just inside the doorway.

“We will make allowances for the wardrobe tonight,” Vaelisse said smoothly.

“But we will make no allowances for your posture.

You look like a constable arriving to serve a warrant.

Close the door and come to the table.” Aric shut the door, instantly feeling the heavy finality of the ironwood clicking into the frame.

He walked toward the dining table, acutely aware of how loud his boots sounded against the wood floor.

He pulled out the chair opposite Vaelisse’s setting and moved to sit down.

“Stop,” Vaelisse commanded softly.

Aric froze halfway down.

“I am a wealthy widow from the upper ward,” Vaelisse said, gliding toward the table.

“I have just paid twenty silver for your company.

I am wearing a silk gown that costs more than your hometown.

Are you simply going to sit down and leave me to handle my own chair?” Aric flushed.

He immediately straightened up, walked around the small table, and pulled her chair out.

Vaelisse stepped in front of it.

As she lowered herself, Aric carefully pushed the chair in behind her.

The movement brought him directly behind her bare shoulders.

The scent of winterbloom was intoxicating, and the ambient chill rolling off her skin sent a sharp shiver down his arms.

“Better,” Vaelisse murmured, adjusting her silk skirts.

“Now, pour the wine.” Aric walked to his side of the table and picked up the crystal decanter.

It was heavy, filled with a dark, rich vintage.

He poured a measure into her glass, taking care not to spill a drop, and then poured his own.

He sat down, placing his hands strictly in his lap.

Vaelisse picked up her glass.

She did not drink.

She simply watched him.

“You are a very handsome man, Aric,” Vaelisse noted clinically.

“You have broad shoulders, striking eyes, and a jawline that clients will want to run their fingers over.

But physically, you are completely guarded.

Your shoulders are tense.

Your hands are hidden.

You are waiting for a math problem to solve.” Aric shifted uncomfortably in his chair.

“I am accustomed to professional environments.” “This is a professional environment,” Vaelisse corrected.

“But the product you are selling is not accounting.

It is intimacy.

A social client is not paying you to exist in the same room as her.

She is paying you to make her feel fascinating, desired, and important.

She wants a mirror that reflects the absolute best version of herself.” Vaelisse leaned forward, resting her forearms on the table.

The silver silk dipped slightly, exposing the pale swell of her breasts.

“Look at me,” she ordered.

Aric forced his eyes up.

He met her cool, gray gaze, trying desperately not to let his eyes dart downward.

“You are escorting me to a guild gala,” Vaelisse prompted, her voice dropping into a flawless, aristocratic cadence.

“My late husband ignored me for thirty years.

I am surrounded by women who are younger than I am, and I am feeling incredibly insecure about my gown.

Speak to me, Master Vale.” Aric’s mind blanked.

He had spent his life talking to flour merchants, drovers, and civic inspectors.

He scrambled for something charming to say.

“The…

the silk is very high quality,” Aric managed, his voice stiff.

“It suits the current seasonal fashion of the district.” Vaelisse let out a soft, elegant sigh.

She set her crystal glass down.

“I did not ask for a customs appraisal of my clothing, Aric,” she said flatly.

“That was entirely bloodless.

If you say that to a widow, she will demand her twenty silver back and tell all her friends you have the personality of a tax collector.” Aric’s jaw tightened.

The provincial pride flared up, cutting through his nervousness.

“I am not used to flattering people for coin.” “Flattery is cheap.

Attention is expensive,” Vaelisse corrected smoothly.

She sat back, her posture shifting.

She looked away, her aristocratic persona returning flawlessly.

“Let us try a different approach.

A client wants you to listen, not audit her.” Vaelisse ran a finger along the rim of her glass, her voice taking on a wistful, lonely tone.

“My husband never accompanied me to the winter conservatory,” Vaelisse said.

“He found flowers frivolous.” Aric almost told her that maintaining a heated glasshouse during the winter was financially wasteful.

He stopped himself just in time, remembering her warning about tax collectors.

He looked at her face, noticing the manufactured melancholy in her expression.

“Which flowers did you go to see?” Aric asked instead, leaning forward slightly.

Vaelisse’s expression shifted.

A flicker of genuine approval warmed her icy eyes.

“Winter roses,” she replied.

“The white ones.” “Then your husband missed the better company,” Aric said smoothly.

Vaelisse smiled.

“Much better.

You noticed what mattered to the character, invited her to speak, and made her feel chosen.

But a widow also wants to know if she affects you.” She stood up from her chair and walked slowly around the small table until she stood directly beside him.

“Stand up,” she commanded.

Aric stood.

He was taller than she was, but standing this close to her, he felt entirely outmaneuvered.

Vaelisse stopped a foot away.

“The social menu legally ends at an offered arm,” she instructed calmly.

“But this is a supervised lesson, not a client booking.

To teach you how to react to a client intentionally crossing a line, I am going to cross it.

I am going to touch your chest and your neck.

You may tell me to stop at any time.

Do you understand?” Aric nodded, his throat suddenly tight.

“I understand.” “An upper-ward client will test you,” Vaelisse murmured, stepping fully into his personal space.

Her cool hands reached up, resting flat against the center of his chest.

“She will want to know if she has power over you.

If she touches you, and you flinch away like a frightened monk, the illusion shatters.” Aric didn’t flinch, but his heart hammered violently against her palms.

“I am not frightened.” “No,” Vaelisse agreed, looking up at him, her gray eyes dark and searching.

“You are just terrified of losing control.

You hold yourself so tightly, Aric.

Let go of the ledger.” Her hands slid slowly up his chest, her cool fingers slipping beneath the collar of his linen shirt to rest against the warm skin of his neck.

The contrast of her freezing touch against his flushed skin sent a violent jolt of electricity straight to his groin.

Aric’s breath hitched.

Beneath the heavy wool of his trousers, his cock instantly sprang to life, hardening with a heavy, painful throb that pressed tightly against the fabric.

Vaelisse felt his pulse spike beneath her fingertips.

Her gaze dropped to his lap, tracking the undeniable, massive shift in his trousers.

Her lips curved into a slow, predatory smile.

“Better,” Vaelisse whispered, stepping half a pace closer so the silk of her gown brushed against his legs.

“A client wants to know that beneath the polite conversation, she is driving you mad.

She wants to see that flush on your neck.

She wants to know that a single touch can make you hard.” Aric swallowed heavily.

He couldn’t move.

He couldn’t step away.

He was completely captivated by the ancient, confident predator standing in front of him.

“Tell me I look devastating, Aric,” Vaelisse ordered softly, her thumb lightly tracing his jawline.

Aric looked down into her stormy gray eyes.

The clerk vanished.

The hungry, desperate man she had seen in his office took over.

“You look absolutely devastating,” Aric rasped, his voice rough and incredibly deep.

Slowly, tentatively, he raised his bruised hands.

Vaelisse caught his wrists before he could make contact.

“You may touch my waist,” Vaelisse said, her voice a low, commanding whisper, enforcing the strict discipline of the training boundary.

“Only my waist.” Aric let out a shuddering breath.

He slipped his hands past her wrists and rested them firmly on the bare, icy skin of her waist.

Vaelisse’s eyes dilated slightly.

She let out a soft, approving breath.

“Good,” she murmured.

She let the tension hang for three long, agonizing seconds, the cold of her skin warring with the heat radiating from his body.

His cock twitched against his thigh, begging for him to pull her flush against his hips.

Then, Vaelisse smoothly stepped back, breaking the contact entirely.

Aric’s hands fell to his sides.

He swayed slightly, completely disoriented by the sudden loss of her touch.

Vaelisse walked back to her chair, her silver silk gown trailing perfectly behind her.

She sat down, picked up her crystal glass, and took a delicate sip of the dark wine.

“That will suffice for your first lesson,” Vaelisse said, her voice returning to its cool, unbothered cadence.

“You have the raw materials, Master Vale.

You simply need to stop apologizing for them.

When your new coat arrives, Mera will schedule a supervised dining booking.

Before then, you and I will practice again.” Aric stood near the table, his chest heaving, his face flushed, and an absolute, agonizing erection trapped in his trousers.

“That’s it?” Aric choked out.

“The lesson is over?” Vaelisse offered him a small, wicked smile over the rim of her glass.

“You booked a social practice session, Aric,” Vaelisse reminded him smoothly.

“Zero intimate contact beyond a hand resting on an arm.

Or, in this case, a waist.

You did very well.

But if you want to push those boundaries, you will have to earn your way onto the premium menu first.” She gestured toward the ironwood door.

“Have a good night, Master Vale.

Try not to break your mattress when you handle that.” Aric stared at her for a long moment, thoroughly defeated.

He turned on his heel and walked out of the freezing suite, his ears burning and his body aching, deeply aware that he had just stepped completely off the edge of the map.
