That was the first thing Kael noticed.

There was no floor beneath his feet.

No ceiling.Full novel: The Villain’s Karma System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

No walls.

He was simply standing inside an endless darkness that stretched in every direction.

Pi was gone.

Elena was gone.

Observer.

Second.

Third.

Lucien.

Everyone had disappeared.

Even the System was silent.

Kael looked around.

“Great.”

His voice echoed.

“Absolutely fantastic.”

Nothing answered.

Kael waited.

Still nothing.

He sighed.

“System?”

Silence.

“Pi?”

Nothing.

“Elena?”

Only his own voice returned.

Kael rubbed the back of his neck.

“I’ve officially entered the creepy mystery dimension.”

A faint sound came from somewhere ahead.

Tap.

Kael stopped.

Another.

Tap.

Then another.

Tap.

Footsteps.

Someone was walking toward him.

Kael’s hand instinctively moved toward his sword.

The darkness slowly parted.

A figure appeared.

A young man.

Ordinary clothes.

Dark hair.

Nothing particularly remarkable.

Kael stared.

His heart suddenly beat faster.

He knew that face.

Not completely.

Not clearly.

But something about it—

Something buried deep within him recognized the person.

The figure stopped several meters away.

“It’s been a long time.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Who are you?”

The figure smiled.

“You don’t remember?”

Kael drew his sword.

“No.”

The figure looked at the blade.

Then back at Kael.

“You always did that when you were nervous.”

Kael froze.

His grip tightened.

“How do you know that?”

The figure didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked around the darkness.

“Do you know where you are?”

“No.”

“Do you know why you’re here?”

“No.”

“Do you know why you were returned?”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re starting to sound like everyone else.”

The figure laughed.

“That hasn’t changed.”

Kael lowered his sword slightly.

“Who are you?”

The figure took one step closer.

“I can’t tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because if I tell you now, you’ll remember too quickly.”

Kael’s expression darkened.

“That’s convenient.”

“It isn’t.”

The figure looked genuinely serious.

“Your memories were sealed for a reason.”

“By who?”

“Not the Author.”

Kael’s eyes sharpened.

“So you know about the Author.”

“Yes.”

“Who is the Author?”

The figure looked toward the darkness above them.

“I don’t know.”

Kael blinked.

“You don’t know?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know about them?”

“Because I’ve seen what they do.”

The figure looked back at Kael.

“They don’t create stories.”

He paused.

“They correct them.”

Kael’s expression changed.

“Correct?”

“Yes.”

The figure’s voice became quieter.

“When something happens that isn’t supposed to happen, the Author corrects it.”

Kael remembered the academy.

The disappearing portraits.

The erased students.

The forgotten names.

The black book.

“So that’s what happened to Aetheris.”

“Yes.”

“The academy is being corrected.”

“Yes.”

“Because of me?”

The figure didn’t answer immediately.

That silence was enough.

Kael’s expression hardened.

“Because of me.”

“Partially.”

Kael frowned.

“What does that mean?”

The figure looked directly into his eyes.

“You aren’t the only thing that doesn’t belong.”

Kael remembered Pi.

Then Observer.

Second.

Third.

Fourth.

The forgotten student.

The sky entity.

The underground entity.

His expression became serious.

“The irregularities.”

The figure nodded.

“They are symptoms.”

“Symptoms of what?”

“The story breaking.”

Kael stared

“So this world was already unstable before I arrived?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was I chosen?”

The figure looked at him.

“Because you could survive it.”

Kael’s eyebrows lifted.

“That’s it?”

“No.”

The figure smiled faintly.

“That is only the reason you were suitable.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Then what’s the real reason?”

The figure turned away.

“You’ll remember.”

“I’d rather hear it.”

“You wouldn’t believe me.”

“Try me.”

The figure was silent.

Then— the darkness around them changed.

A room appeared.

Not a real room.

A memory.

Kael recognized it immediately.

His old bedroom.

His previous life.

The room was small.

A desk.

A bed.

A shelf filled with fantasy novels.

A cheap computer.

A window overlooking the street.

Kael stared.

“I remember this.”

The figure stood beside him.

“You should.”

Kael looked around.

There was something strange about the memory.

Everything was accurate.

But one detail was missing.

The clock.

Kael frowned.

“Where’s the clock?”

“There wasn’t one.”

“There was.”

“No.”

Kael looked at him.

“I remember it.”

“You remember the time.”

The figure tapped the wall.

“But not the clock.”

Kael’s expression changed.

A memory fragment appeared.

His younger self sitting at the desk.

Reading.

The book on the desk was familiar.

Chronicles of the Fallen World.

Kael’s eyes widened.

“No.”

The figure watched him.

“Yes.”

“That book…”

“Wasn’t fiction.”

Kael stopped breathing.

The room began to distort.

The book on the desk opened by itself.

Pages flipped rapidly.

Characters.

Wars.

Magic.

Heroes.

Villains.

Everything Kael remembered from the novel appeared.

Except—

Kael.

He wasn’t there.

Kael stepped closer.

“Where am I?”

“You weren’t part of the story.”

“Then why did I read it?”

“Because someone wanted you to.”

Kael’s face went blank.

“What?”

The figure pointed toward the book.

“You thought you discovered it.”

Kael stared at the pages.

“But you were guided to it.”

“By who?”

“I don’t know.”

Kael clenched his fists.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

The figure smiled.

“You’re beginning to understand.”

Kael looked at the book again.

The title began changing.

Chronicles of the Fallen World

The letters twisted.

Then became:

THE WORLD THAT WAS WRITTEN

Kael stepped backward.

“What the hell…”

The pages turned.

Then he sad it.

A chapter.

A character.

KAEL VEYRON.

Kael froze.

The original Kael.

His entire life.

His childhood.

His failures.

His cruelty.

His eventual death.

Everything.

But something was different.

The final page wasn’t complete.

The words stopped halfway.

KAEL VEYRON WILL DIE IN—

The sentence ended.

Kael stared.

“That’s when I entered.”

“Yes.”

“So…”

He slowly looked toward the figure.

“The original Kael’s story wasn’t finished.”

“No.”

“And I replaced him.”

“No.”

Kael frowned.

“What do you mean, no?”

“You didn’t replace him.”

The figure pointed toward the page.

“You interrupted him.”

Kael stared.

The distinction felt strangely important

“What happened to the original Kael?”

The figure remained silent.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Answer me.”

“He was never supposed to become you.”

Kael’s blood ran cold.

“What?”

The figure continued.

“The original Kael was real.”

Kael said nothing.

“He lived.”

“He suffered.”

“He made choices.”

“He was going to die.”

“But his death was not supposed to become your beginning.”

Kael’s mind raced.

“Then how did it happen?

The figure looked at him.

“Someone opened a door.”

Kael remembered the black door.

His eyes widened.

“The white room.”

“Yes.”

“The door was opened?”

“Yes.”

“By the selector?”

The figure didn’t answer.

Kael’s expression hardened.

“Was it?”

The figure finally nodded.

“Yes.”

Kael’s breathing slowed.

“Then the selector brought me here.”

“No.”

Kael frowned.

“Then what did they do?”

“They gave you a choice.”

Kael stared.

“What choice?”

The figure stepped closer

“You were dying.”

Kael’s memories flickered.

His previous life.

The last day.

Rain.

A street.

A strange feeling.

Then darkness.

But there was something else.

A voice.

Someone speaking.

Kael couldn’t hear the words.

He pressed a hand against his head

“I can’t remember.”

“You weren’t supposed to.”

“Why?”

“Because you agreed to forget.”

Kael looked up sharply

“I agreed?”

“Yes.”

“Why would I agree to that?”

“Because you were told what would happen if you remembered.”

Kael stared.

“What?

The figure’s expression became grim.

“You would have refused.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“So the memory was sealed because…”

“Because the choice had to be made without fear.”

Kael’s mind went silent.

The figure continued.

“You were offered a chance to live again.”

Kael swallowed.

“And the price?”

The figure looked away.

“Your old life.”

Kael’s face hardened.

“My memories?”

“Not all of them.”

“My identity?”

“No.”

“My future?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

The figure’s eyes met his.

“Your certainty.”

Kael frowned.

“Meaning?”

“You had to enter the new world without knowing why you were there.”

Kael stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because if you knew the truth…”

The figure’s voice dropped.

“…the Author would have found you before you arrived.”

Silence.

Kael slowly understood.

The reason his memories had been sealed.

The reason he didn’t know about the selector.

The reason Pi was mysterious.

The reason the Author had trouble controlling him.

Everything had been hidden.

Not from Kael.

From the Author.

Kael’s expression became cold.

“So the selector was protecting me.”

The figure didn’t answer.

“Were they?”

Silence.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“You’re hiding something.”

“I am.”

“What?”

“That isn’t the only reason they chose you.”

Kael’s expression darkened.

“Then what is?”

The figure turned away.

“Because you were compatible.”

“Compatible with what?”

The darkness trembled.

The black door appeared again.

This time, it was behind the figure.

The crown.

The eye.

The broken chain.

All three symbols began glowing.

And then— the door opened.

A massive eye stared through it.

Not the Sky Entity.

Something older.

Something deeper.

The Fourth Presence.

Kael stepped backward.

“No.”

The voice emerged from the doorway.

“THE RETURNED.”

Kael stared.

“You followed me?”

“I WAS HERE FIRST.”

The figure’s expression changed.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Kael noticed Find the original chapter at g.com.

“You know that thing.”

The figure didn’t respond.

“You know it.”

Still nothing

Kael pointed toward the door.

“What is Fourth?”

The figure whispered:

“Not a creature.”

“Then what?”

“A boundary.”

Kael frowned.

“A boundary between what?”

The figure looked toward him.

“Story and reality.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

The Fourth Presence spoke.

“FALSE.”

The figure immediately turned.

The enormous eye narrowed.

“I AM THE BOUNDARY BETWEEN WHAT WAS WRITTEN AND WHAT CAN STILL BE CHANGED.”

Kael’s face tightened.

“That’s even worse.”

The Fourth Presence continued.

“THE AUTHOR WRITES.”

“THE SELECTOR CHOOSES.”

“THE RETURNED CHANGES.”

Kael froze.

The figure looked at him.

“Now you understand.”

“No.”

Kael shook his head.

“You’re still not telling me who the selector is.”

The figure smiled.

“You already know.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“What?”

The figure’s body began fading.

“Remember your final conversation.”

“What conversation?”

“The one before you died.”

Kael’s heart slammed against his chest.

“Wait!”

He reached for the figure

But his hand passed through.

The figure’s voice echoed.

“You weren’t summoned.”

“You weren’t reincarnated.”

“You were invited.”

The darkness shattered.

Kael opened his eyes.

He was back inside Aetheris.

He fell to one knee.

“Kael!”

Elena rushed toward him.

Pi immediately jumped onto his shoulder.

“Pi!”

Kael breathed heavily.

He looked around.

The black door was gone.

The academy was still collapsing

But something had changed.

The System appeared.

[Memory Recovery Complete: 36%]

[New Information Acquired.]

Host was not randomly reincarnated.

Host accepted an invitation to return.

Host’s memory was voluntarily sealed.

The Selector is NOT the Author.

The Selector’s identity remains unknown.

Kael stared at the screen.

Then another notification appeared.

[Special Condition Updated.]

“The person responsible for Host’s return may have interacted with Host before death.”

“Probability of prior-life connection: CONFIRMED.”

Kael slowly stood.

Elena looked at him.

“What did you see?”

Kael hesitated.

Then smiled.

“Nothing useful.”

Elena narrowed her eyes.

“You’re lying.”

Kael blinked.

“I’m learning from the best.”

“Who?”

Kael looked toward Observer.

Observer’s crimson eyes narrowed.

“You shouldn’t have remembered that much.”

Kael’s smile faded.

“So you knew.”

Observer didn’t answer.

Kael stepped closer.

“You knew I was invited.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew I had a choice.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew my memories were sealed.”

Observer remained silent.

Kael stared at him.

“Then answer one question.”

Observer waited

“Did you know me before I came here?”

Silence.

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

Observer finally spoke.

“Yes.”

The world seemed to stop.

Elena looked between them.

Mira froze

Leon lowered his sword.

Even Second stared.

Kael whispered:

“How?”

Observer’s silver mask reflected Kael’s face.

“I saw you.”

“Where?”

“Between worlds.”

“When?”

“Before you entered this one.”

Kael clenched his fists.

“You’re avoiding the question.”

Observer’s voice became quieter.

“I didn’t know your name.”

Kael stared.

“But you knew me.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

Observer looked toward Pi.

“I saw what followed you.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“Pi?”

Observer nodded.

“Pi was already with you.”

Kael’s expression changed.

“Before I died?”

“Yes.”

Silence.

Pi looked away.

Kael slowly turned toward the creature.

“You…”

Pi refused to meet his eyes.

“Pi.”

Kael stared.

“You were there.”

Pi lowered its head.

Kael felt something twist inside his chest.

Then— the System appeared.

[Major Truth Discovered.]

Companion Pi was present before Host entered the current world.

Pi’s original relationship with Host remains UNKNOWN.

New Mission Generated.

[WHAT WAS PI?]

“Objective: Discover Pi’s true origin and relationship with Host before transmigration.”

Reward: 3,000 Karma

“Failure: Unknown”

“Special Condition:

Do not allow the Author to learn what Pi remembers.”

Kael stared at the final sentence.

Then he looked at Pi

The little creature finally raised its head.

Its golden eye glowed.

For a fraction of a second—

Kael saw the black quill again.

But this time there was something beneath it.

A fourth symbol.

A symbol Kael had never seen before.

A small white circle surrounded by darkness.

Kael whispered

“What are you?”

Pi looked at him

And for the first time— it didn’t say its usual word.

It spoke clearly.

“Kael.”

Everyone froze.

Pi blinked.

Its expression became confused.

Then—

“Pi?”

Kael stared.

His heart pounded.

“You…”

Pi looked frightened.

Kael slowly reached toward it.

But before he could touch the creature— every magical barrier in Aetheris shattered at once.

The sky turned completely black.

The enormous Sky Entity opened its eye.

The Fourth Presence awakened beneath the academy.

The black book appeared above the ruins.

And a single sentence was written across its pages.

THE SELECTOR HAS AWAKENED.

Kael’s face went pale.

Then another sentence appeared.

THEY ARE COMING FOR THE RETURNED.

Kael looked toward the sky.

For the first time since arriving in this world— he wasn’t afraid of the Author.

He wasn’t afraid of the Fourth Presence.

He wasn’t even afraid of the person who had chosen him.

Because now— he wanted answers.

And somewhere beyond the worldline, a hand slowly reached toward a black quill

The Author looked at the newly written sentence.

And whispered:

“They remembered Pi.”

The quill trembled

For the first time the Author did not write.

They waited.

Because something else had begun writing first.
