“Kael.”

Nobody spoke.

Even the collapsing ruins of Aetheris seemed to become strangely quiet.

Kael stared at Pi.

The little creature stared back.

Its tiny body trembled.

Its golden eye flickered between gold and black.

Kael slowly crouched.

“You said my name.”

Pi tilted its head.

“Pi…”

“No.”

Kael’s voice was unusually soft.

“You said something else.”

Pi stared at him.

“Kael.”

Again.

Clear.

Perfect.

Kael’s breath caught.

Behind him, Elena slowly lowered her sword.

“Pi can talk?”

Mira’s eyes widened.

“I thought it only knew one word.”

Leon looked between them.

“So did I.”

Lucien, however, wasn’t looking at Pi.

He was staring at the symbols appearing across its body.

The black quill.

The crown.

The eye.

The broken chain.

And now— the white circle.

Lucien’s expression became pale.

“No…”

Kael immediately noticed.

“What?”

Lucien stepped closer.

“That symbol…”

“What about it?”

“I’ve seen it before.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Where?”

Lucien hesitated.

“In the ruins.”

“What ruins?”

“The ones where I found the black book.”

Silence.

Kael stood.

“You never mentioned that.”

“Because I didn’t know what it meant.”

Lucien looked at Pi.

“Until now.”

Pi suddenly growled.

A tiny sound.

But the entire academy reacted.

The ground shook.

BOOOOOOM!

A crack spread beneath their feet.

Elena grabbed Kael’s arm.

“Something’s coming.”

Kael looked downward.

The crack widened.

Darkness appeared beneath the academy.

Not a cave.

Not an underground chamber.

Something deeper.

Something that shouldn’t have been there.

The Fourth Presence spoke.

“THE SELECTOR APPROACHES.”

Kael’s expression hardened.

“So it’s true.”

Observer immediately turned toward the northern edge of the academy.

Second did the same.

Third remained completely still.

“What’s wrong?” Mira asked.

Third whispered:

“They’re here.”

A gust of wind swept through the ruins.

Then another

And another.

The clouds above Aetheris began rotating.

The sky darkened.

A circle of pale light formed above the academy.

Kael stared upward.

Something was descending.

Not a monster.

Not an army.

A person.

A lone figure slowly descended through the clouds.

They wore a long dark cloak.

Their face was hidden behind a smooth white mask.

No symbol.

No markings.

Nothing distinctive.

They simply floated downward.

Until their feet touched the broken courtyard.

Silence.

The figure looked around.

Then their gaze stopped on Kael.

Pi immediately hissed.

“Pi!”

Kael’s expression changed.

“You know them?”

Pi pressed itself against Kael’s shoulder.

The masked figure didn’t move.

Then they spoke.

“Kael Veyron.”

Kael’s hand moved toward his sword.

“You know my name.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

The figure tilted their head.

“Because I was there.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“At my death?”

The figure didn’t answer.

That silence told him enough.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

Kael took a step forward.

“Who are you?”

The figure remained silent.

Observer moved between them.

“Don’t.”

Kael looked at Observer.

“Don’t what?”

“Ask that question.”

“Why?”

Observer stared at the masked figure.

“Because they won’t answer.”

The figure looked toward Observer.

“You still watch from the shadows.”

Observer’s crimson eyes narrowed.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“And yet I am.”

Second stepped forward.

“Selector.”

The figure turned toward him.

“You remember that name?”

“Barely.”

Third suddenly spoke.

“Then you remember too much.”

The figure looked at Third.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then the figure said:

“You were never supposed to exist.”

Third’s expression became cold.

“Neither was he.”

He pointed at Kael.

The masked figure looked toward Kael.

“No.”

A pause.

“He was supposed to return.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“Return?”

The figure nodded.

“He was always coming back.”

Kael’s heart pounded.

“Who decided that?”

The figure remained silent.

Kael stepped forward.

“You?”

“No.”

“The Author?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

The figure looked toward the sky.

“Someone older.”

The Fourth Presence immediately spoke.

“FALSE.”

The masked figure turned toward the ground.

A deep rumble echoed from beneath the academy.

“NO ONE IS OLDER THAN THE FIRST.”

The figure’s posture stiffened.

Kael stared.

The Fourth Presence continued.

“THE SELECTOR DID NOT CREATE THE RETURNED.”

“THE SELECTOR ONLY OPENED THE DOOR.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who created me?”

Silence.

The Fourth Presence did not answer.

The Selector did not answer.

Observer did not answer.

Kael’s expression darkened.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Pi suddenly jumped from his shoulder.

“PI!”

The creature landed in front of the Selector.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The Selector froze.

For the first time— their composure broke.

They took one step backward.

“Impossible.”

Kael noticed.

“You recognize Pi.”

The Selector stared at the creature.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Pi’s golden eye glowed.

“Kael.”

The Selector went completely still.

Kael stared.

Pi turned toward him.

“Kael…”

Then it looked toward the Selector.

Its voice became quieter.

“Before.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“What?”

Pi’s body trembled.

“Before…”

The word came out broken.

Then— a memory exploded through Kael’s mind.

A white room.

A younger version of himself.

Pi standing beside him.

But this time—

Pi wasn’t small.

It was larger.

Its wings were fully developed.

Its horns were longer.

Its body carried strange white markings.

And standing beside it— was the masked figure.

Kael’s breathing stopped.

The memory shifted.

The masked figure placed a hand on Pi’s head.

Pi didn’t resist.

Then the figure looked at young Kael.

“You’re certain?”

Young Kael nodded.

“Yes.”

“You understand what happens if you fail?”

“Yes.”

“You may never remember this.”

“I know.”

“You may hate us.”

Young Kael hesitated.

Then smiled.

“If it means I get another chance…”

The memory shattered.

Kael staggered.

Elena caught him.

“Kael!”

He pushed himself upright.

His eyes were wide.

“I remember.”

The System appeared.

[Memory Recovery: 36% → 41%]

[Major Memory Fragment Recovered.]

Host willingly accepted the Return.

Companion Pi was present during the selection process.

Selector was present during the selection process

Host’s decision was voluntary.

Reason for decision: SEALED.

Kael stared at the notifications.

Then looked at the Selector.

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“You helped me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Pi.”

“Yes.”

Kael’s voice became colder.

“Then why did you erase my memory?”

The Selector answered quietly.

“You asked us to.”

Kael froze.

“I asked you?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The Selector looked at him.

“Because you were afraid.”

Kael’s expression changed.

“Of what?”

The Selector didn’t answer.

Instead, they looked toward the sky.

The enormous eye of the Sky Entity had appeared again.

It was watching.

The Selector whispered.

“They found you.”

Kael looked upward.

“Who?”

The Selector pointed toward the sky.

“Not them.”

Then toward the academy.

“Not the Author.”

Then toward the darkness beneath the ground.

“Not Fourth.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“Then who?”

The Selector turned toward him.

“The thing that existed before the story.”

A chill ran down Kael’s spine

Lucien’s face lost its color.

“What?”

The Selector continued.

“The Author thinks they control this world.”

“They don’t.”

“The Fourth thinks it is the boundary.”

“It isn’t.”

“The irregularities think they are mistakes.”

“They aren’t.”

The Selector looked directly at Kael.

“They are all consequences.”

Kael stared.

“Consequences of what?”

The Selector’s answer was almost a whisper.

“You.”

Silence.

Kael’s expression went blank.

“Me?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“You were the first thing that existed outside the story.”

Kael’s mind raced.

“But I was a normal person.”

“In your world.”

The Selector paused.

“Not here.”

Kael felt the pieces connecting.

The title.

The Karma threads.

The irregularities.

The Return Authority.

The Author’s fear.

Pi.

The white room.

His previous life.

Everything.

But one question remained.

“Why me?”

The Selector looked at him.

“Because you were the only one who could choose.”

Kael frowned.

“Choose what?”

The Selector raised one hand.

A small black quill appeared.

Kael immediately stepped backward.

The Author’s quill.

But this one was different.

Its tip was white

The Selector drew a small circle in the air.

The world inside the circle disappeared.

Kael stared.

“What is that?”

“A place without a story.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

The Selector continued.

“When you were dying, you were given a choice.”

“To live.”

“To forget.”

“To return.”

“But you could refuse.”

Kael stared.

“And I didn’t.”

“No.”

“Why?”

The Selector looked at him.

“Because you saw what was coming.”

Kael’s heart skipped.

“What was coming?”

The Selector’s mask turned toward Pi.

“You saw the end.”

Pi lowered its head.

Kael’s voice became quiet.

“The end of what?”

“The world.”

Silence

The sky rumbled.

The ground shook.

The black book appeared.

Its pages began turning violently.

Words appeared.

THE RETURNED MUST NOT REMEMBER THE END.

Kael stared.

Then another line.

THE MEMORY IS FORBIDDEN.

Another.

Kael’s expression changed.

The quill on the page began moving.

But before it could finish—

Karma threads appeared around him.

Thousands.

Millions.

Threads connecting people.

Events.

Places.

Possibilities.

And his own thread— was still outside them.

But this time, Kael noticed something new.

His thread wasn’t disconnected.

It was attached to something.

Far beyond the visible world.

Something enormous.

Something white.

Kael stared

“What is that?”

The System appeared.

[Warning.]

Host has perceived an external causal structure.

Classification: UNKNOWN.

Attempting identification…

Failure.

System recommends immediate withdrawal.

Kael ignored it.

His eyes remained fixed on the distant structure.

The Selector whispered:

“Now you see it.”

Kael’s voice was barely audible.

“What am I looking at?”

“The place you came from.”

Kael froze.

“My previous world?”

“No.”

The Selector shook their head.

“Something beyond it.”

Kael’s expression became blank.

“So even my previous world…”

“Was part of the story.”

Silence.

Kael looked at his hands.

His entire life.

His memories.

His death.

His world.

Everything he had believed was real— might have been another layer.

He slowly looked toward the Selector.

“Then what is real?”

The Selector didn’t answer.

Instead— they removed their mask.

Kael’s eyes widened.

He knew the face.

Not completely.

But enough.

The face belonged to someone from his previous life.

Someone he had seen.

Someone he had spoken to.

Someone he had trusted.

Kael’s breathing stopped.

“No…”

The Selector looked at him.

And smiled sadly.

“You remembered me.”

Kael’s mind went blank.

He knew this person.

He knew their voice.

He knew their face

But the name— was still missing.

The System suddenly appeared

[Critical Memory Event.]

[Identity Recognition: 92%]

[Name Recognition: SEALED.]

[Attempting recovery…]

[WARNING.]

External narrative force detected.

The Author is attempting to prevent memory completion.

The black book exploded.

Pages scattered through the sky.

A black quill appeared above them.

And for the first time- the Author wrote directly into the world.

KAEL VEYRON WILL FORGET.

Kael’s eyes widened.

The sentence began glowing.

His memories started fading.

The face in front of him became blurry.

“No.”

Kael clenched his fists.

The world shook.

The Author wrote again.

KAEL VEYRON WILL FORGET THE SELECTOR.

Kael’s vision blurred.

He could feel the memory being pulled away.

The Selector shouted:

“KAEL!”

Kael looked toward them.

“Remember!”

“I—”

“Remember the name!”

Kael fought against the pressure.

The face became clearer.

A name began forming in his mind.

Three syllables.

Then—

[Narrative Interference Activated.]

[Host has rejected predetermined memory outcome.]

[Karma Threads destabilizing.]

[Narrative Correction interrupted.]

The black sentence shattered.

Kael gasped.

The memory returned.

The name was still missing.

But now- he knew exactly where to find it.

The Selector smiled.

“You’re getting close.”

Kael looked at them.

“I’ll remember.”

“I know.”

The Selector stepped backward.

Their body began fading.

Kael reached out.

“Wait!”

“I can’t stay.”

“Why?”

“Because they found me too.”

Kael’s eyes widened.

“Who?”

The Selector looked toward the darkness above

“The one who was here before all of us.”

Then they disappeared.

Gone.

Kael stood frozen.

Pi climbed back onto his shoulder.

“Kael…”

Kael looked at the creature.

For once— he didn’t ask what Pi knew.

He simply held it close.

Above them, the sky cracked.

Below them, Fourth awakened.

And beyond the worldline— the Author slowly raised the black quill.

But this time, the Author didn’t write Kael’s name.

They wrote another.

A name Kael had not yet remembered.

The page immediately began burning.

The Author stared at it.

Then whispered:

“They must not remember who they were before they became Kael.”

The black page disappeared.

And beneath Aetheris Academy— something ancient opened its eyes.

Not Fourth.

Something deeper.

Something that had been watching since before the first page was written.

The System suddenly displayed one final notification.

[Hidden Quest Unlocked.]

[REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE]

Objective: Recover the Host’s original identity before becoming Kael Veyron.

Reward: Unknown

Failure: Unknown

Special Condition:

The Author must not learn the answer first.

Kael stared at the notification.

Then smiled.

Not confidently.

Not happily.

But with determination.

“So that’s the game.”

He looked toward the place where the Selector had vanished.

“You wanted me to remember.”

His eyes hardened.

“Then I will.”

Far beyond the worldline the Author watched.

And for the first time— the Author wasn’t looking at Kael.

They were looking at the thing attached to his Karma thread.

Something outside the story.

Something that had been there before Kael.

Something even the Author feared.

And it slowly opened its eyes.
