The specialized vanguard unit moved through the deep, hidden subterranean pathways of the border forest with absolute, rhythmic precision.

Leading the march was the newly appointed guide, Mireya. Unlike the traditional demon warriors, she didn't ride a standard horse; instead, she sat gracefully atop her massive personal snake familiar. The gargantuan serpent possessed smooth, shimmering scales of a stunning, rare pink color that beautifully reflected the dim starlight filtering through the upper canopies, its silent movements gliding effortlessly over the thick moss.

By the time the final morning sun dipped completely beneath the horizon, the air turned freezing cold, and a suffocating, unnatural white mist began to curl around the trunks of the ancient trees.Full novel: The Villain’s Sinful System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

"U-Um... everyone... please stop for a moment," Mireya whispered softly, her voice a gentle, hesitant murmur as she timidly raised her small hand. Her pink serpent familiar instantly sensed her nervous energy, coiling its massive body, letting out a soft hiss, and coming to a smooth halt right at the edge of a massive, circular boundary line where the dense white fog became thick like liquid silk.

Raizael pulled the reins of his royal steed, his eyes narrowing as he stared into the dense white wall. "We are still a few leagues away from the primary Elyrian border checkpoint, Mireya. Why are we stopping here?"

Mireya flitched slightly under his direct gaze, her golden eyes darting away in shyness as a soft pink blush colored her cheeks. "T-The path ahead... it isn't ordinary mountain weather, Sovereign Regent," she explained quietly, her fingers nervously twisting the edge of her travel cloak. "This is the Phantasmal Fog Forest, and it... it forms a perfect, circular barrier around the entire perimeter of the fallen Kingdom of Elyria. It is almost night, and... and I must ask everyone to please not step foot inside this boundary before sunrise."

Commander Karon stepped forward, his massive war hammer resting against his broad, bare chest as his brow furrowed. "A common forest illusion? My vanguard warriors have trained in the sulfur fields of Malgora. We can easily push through standard mental arrays."

"I-It isn't a standard array, Commander," Mireya countered softly, her voice trembling slightly with a trace of fear as she looked down from her familiar. "The... the ancient entity woven into the core of this forest is incredibly powerful. At night, its strength multiplies. The moment someone steps inside, the fog analyzes their memories and constructs hyper-realistic, deep illustrations and tailored hallucinations of their deepest desires or greatest regrets. Once you are completely paralyzed by the illusion, the roots of the forest wrap around you and... and slowly absorb your life force and mana until nothing is left but bone. Going in now is... it's literal suicide, um, if I am being completely honest."

Princess Sylphiri shuddered slightly from her position on the saddle, her long pointed ears twitching as she looked at the silent, twisting white fog. "She's right, Karon. I can feel a highly dense, chaotic fluctuation of phantasmal mana radiating from the boundary lines. Pushing through without preparation is tactically reckless."

Raizael looked at the circular fog, a calm, calculating smirk playing on his lips. "A forest that feeds on the illusions of the soul... a fascinating security measure. Very well, Mireya. We shall heed your warning. Karon, order the men to establish a hidden, completely silent camp right here outside the boundary line. We march the exact millisecond the first morning sun breaks."

"Understood, Regent! Camp down!" Karon grunted, rapidly turning to coordinate the stealth units.

.....

Meanwhile, completely on the opposite side of the massive, circular phantasmal boundary, another party had just reached the outer edge of the exact same white wall.

The Selected Hero Caelum Sol-Zenith rode his armored white stallion to a halt, his blonde hair catching the dim moonlight. Standing tightly beside him were Selene, clutching her glowing indigo staff, and Magnus, leaning against his colossal gilded tower shield. Behind them stood only a very small, basic escort army consisting of a single junior commander and a few frontline scout soldiers.

The junior army commander stepped forward, bowing deeply before Caelum's saddle. "Lord Hero, the path ahead has become entirely unnavigable. Our holy compasses are spinning erratically. The outer perimeter of the Elyrian ruins is guarded by a legendary, dense fog forest. It is far too dangerous to advance through this terrain at night with just our few men. I highly recommend we establish a small encampment here and wait until sunrise to begin the liberation."

Caelum looked at the eerie, swirling mist, his blue eyes flashing with a righteous, confident focus. "Very well, Commander. Order the men to set up the tents. We will rest our bodies tonight and completely purge this fog the moment the sun rises."

By midnight, the tiny imperial campsite was completely quiet. The few soldiers had built small, controlled campfires, and the primary forces had retired to their sleeping quarters. The inner perimeter seemed entirely safe, but the few army men tasked with taking care of the border around the camp were chilling, completely relaxed and spread exceptionally far apart in all directions, assuming no demon army would dare approach the holy borders.

Inside her tent, Selene couldn't sleep. The strange, pulsing vibrations of the phantasmal mana outside were interfering with her cosmic star-magic matrices.

Sighing softly, the silver-haired mage grabbed her crystal staff and stepped out into the cold night air, deciding to make a quiet stroll around the campsite to personally check if there were any hidden threads or anomalies lurking in the shadows. She walked along the edge of the line, passing the distant, chilling sentries until she was standing right at the edge of the silent white fog. There was absolutely nothing out of place.

“...H-Help me... please... someone save me...”

Suddenly, a faint, heartbreaking cry of a desperate woman violently echoed through the quiet trees, drifting directly out from the deep depths of the thick white mist.

Selene froze, her large indigo eyes widening in sudden shock. Her maternal, protective instincts as an elite high-mage instantly overrode her tactical training. Without waiting to call Magnus or alert the distant, relaxed soldiers, she gripped her staff and stepped straight forward into the freezing white fog, completely devoid of any safety lines.

"Hello?! Who is out there?!" Selene screamed into the mist, her voice echoing hollowly against the trees. "Where are you?! Stay calm, I am an imperial mage, I can save you!"

“I’m here... right here... the roots are trapping me... please...” the feminine voice cried out from deeper within the swirling vortex, sounding closer with every step Selene took.

Selene ran deeper into the dense, blinding white fog, her crystal staff radiating a soft blue light to pierce the darkness. She pushed past a dense cluster of black roots until she suddenly stumbled into a small, silent clearing deep within the forest.

There, standing perfectly still in the center of the swirling white mist, was the silhouette of a woman looking directly back at her. As the fog slowly parted around the figure's face, Selene’s indigo eyes dilated into absolute, hollow circles of profound horror. Her crystal staff slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering loudly against the dirt.

"N-No..." Selene choked out, her voice a terrified, breaking whisper as her body began to shiver violently. "This... this is impossible... It can't be true... You're supposed to be..."

.....

Meanwhile, far away from the phantasmal forest, inside the grand, stone-carved military plazas of The Celestrix Empire, the final preparations for an international crisis were being completed.

Thousands of elite holy knights, clad in pristine silver plate armor and holding massive banners of light, stood in flawless, massive rows beneath the moonlight. Standing on the grand stone balcony overlooking the legions was the Supreme Commander of the imperial army, his heavy sword drawn as he looked down at his troops, his voice a booming, patriotic roar.

"Listen to me, warriors of the light!" the Supreme Commander bellowed, his voice echoing through the plaza. "The time has officially come to reclaim our absolute, holy pride! The dark stains of the past will be washed away with holy blood! Fight with an unyielding, brave, and entirely selfless manner! We march tonight to completely crush the shadow at its root!"

Standing within the front lines, a seasoned high-tier knight looked up at the balcony, a flicker of nervous hesitation passing over his face. He leaned over to a nearby captain, whispering in a low tone. "Shouldn't the high command be more careful? We are launching a direct invasion into The Umbral Sovereignty of Malgora. Shouldn't we wait for more reinforcement legions before attacking the stronghold of the Great Demon Atlas? If that monster takes the field, our frontlines will be vaporized."

The Supreme Commander caught the sudden murmur in the ranks, his golden eyes narrowing with absolute confidence. He raised his hand, silencing the square.

"I can see the hesitation in some of your eyes, but let me put your fears to absolute rest!" the Supreme Commander declared, a proud smile playing on his lips. "Our deep network of secret spies has just delivered an invaluable piece of high-tension data. The Great Demon King, Atlas, has not been physically seen anywhere inside the Sovereignty for the past few years! No one within the royal demon court or the lower sectors knows where he is. Because he has completely failed to launch a single raid, attack a single human village, or defend his crystal borders in years, it is entirely safe to say that he is either incapacitated or somewhere exceptionally far away! If there is any shift in their leadership, our secret spy will let us know instantly, so there is absolutely zero need to worry! Victory is already ours!"

With a resounding, massive cheer that shook the very foundations of the plaza, the massive human army began its march, their heavy boots beating the ground as they advanced directly toward the borders of The Umbral Sovereignty of Malgora, completely setting off the countdown for a bloody invasion.

.....

Back inside the quiet, volcanic spires of the demon capital, the massive royal castle was enveloped in a peaceful, silent night.

Standing entirely alone on the edge of the palace’s highest, massive stone balcony was Morrigan. Her pristine, ultra-long silver-white silk hair cascaded beautifully over her white silk gown, fluttering gently in the warm, sulfur-scented wind. Her large, serene silver eyes were fixed deeply on the western horizon, her slender fingers tightly gripping the stone railing.

Ever since the gate closed behind his horse, her chest had carried a constant, heavy ache of longing. Her quiet, fanatical soul belonged entirely to one man.

"Raizael..." Morrigan whispered softly into the empty night air, a beautiful, submissive smile playing on her pink lips as a single tear of longing glistened in her silver eyes. "Please... return to me safely. Your sanctuary will be waiting."

The shadow of war was closing in from all directions, while the Sovereign Regent pressed deeper into the dead phantoms of the past.
