The early pre-dawn mist hung low over the Iron Docks, wrapping the timber roofs and rusted iron cranes of Oakhaven in a shroud of damp blue grey. Down below the stone seawalls, the tide lapped lazily against the barnacle-crusted pilings, carrying the familiar scents of salt water, rotting kelp, and cold coal dust.
Kaelen Ashford slipped through the narrow gap in the drainage culvert behind the West Watchtower, landing softly on the muddy embankment with barely a whisper of sound.
Beside him, Nox moved like a living shadow. The tiny black-furred creature did not leave a single footprint in the soft mud, its Silent Tread passive keeping its movements entirely weightless. Twin pools of molten gold glowed faintly in the gloom, flickered once toward the towering white cliff walls of the High Precinct, and then softened as Nox looked up at Kaelen.
"We made it back," Kaelen whispered, adjusting the heavy burlap sack slung over his shoulder.
Inside the sack rested the harvested spoils from their battle in the subterranean sanctuary beneath the Whispering Woods: four petrified Dread-Gorgon venom fangs, three crystallized mana-vein shards, and a tightly wrapped parcel of petrified dragon-bone fragments. To an ordinary merchant or Guild appraiser in Oakhaven, these items would look like nothing more than curious geological fossils or degraded monster scrap. But to Kaelen, they represented a fortune in both silver and raw Extinction Points.
Kaelen navigated the maze of narrow back alleys, keeping under the overhangs of sagging rooftops to avoid the occasional passing city guard patrol. The guards in the lower district rarely bothered to look closely at dock laborers returning from early shifts, especially when their clothes were stained with mud and soot.
Ten minutes later, Kaelen pulled himself up the creaking exterior ladder behind Old Bram’s smithy, slipped through the attic window, and closed the wooden shutter behind him.
The small room was cold and quiet. The smell of cold ash and sawdust filled the air.
Kaelen carefully lowered the burlap sack into the dark corner beneath his straw mattress, covering it with a layer of loose floorboards. Then he sat down heavily on his cot, unlacing his soaked leather boots and letting out a long, slow breath.
Nox leaped lightly onto his lap, curling into a circle on Kaelen’s knees and letting out a soft, rhythmic purr that vibrated against Kaelen’s thighs.
Kaelen closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the exposed timber wall. In the quiet darkness of the attic, the translucent blue interface of the System materialized before his vision, glowing with an intensity that seemed fundamentally different from before.
Where there had once been the cold, mocking label of [FAILED SUMMONER], the golden-hued text of the System now pulsed with ancient, resonant authority:
[NAME: KAELEN ASHFORD] [AGE: 18] [PRIMARY CLASS: ERASED BEAST TAMER (UNIQUE / ANCIENT)] [SUB-CLASS: UNBOUND] [SUMMONED BEASTS: 1 / UNLIMITED (ARCHIVE BOUND)] [CURRENT ACTIVE SUMMON: NOX (VOID-STALKER - PRIMAL DRAGON-HUNTER)] [PASSIVE CLASS TRAITS UNLOCKED:]
[SPECIES MEMORY (LV 1)]: Allows the user to perceive the true ancestral bloodline and suppressed history of any monster or fossil.
[EXTINCTION SENSE (PASSIVE)]: Automatically detects hidden extinct mana signatures and ancient bone relics within a 100-meter radius.
[PRIMAL HARMONY (LV 1)]: Eliminates the standard System backlash when bonding with unregistered or forbidden species.
[PRIMITIVE MENTAL MESH]: Establishes telepathic intent sharing between Tamer and Extinct Summons without distance penalty.
[ACTIVE CLASS SKILLS UNLOCKED:]
[PRIMAL COMMAND (LV 1)]: Temporarily surges a target extinct beast with ancestral authority, boosting all attributes by 25% and imposing a 15% terror debuff on lower-tier dragon-blooded creatures for 30 seconds. (Cooldown: 120 seconds. Mana Cost: 25 MP).
[EXTINCTION RECOGNITION]: Enables direct conversion of extinct biological matter into Extinction Points (EP).
Kaelen stared at the glowing lines, his heart hammering against his ribs.
In the Kingdom of Solis, Class structure was rigidly defined by the Royal Academy and the Grand Overseers. A person received their Class at eighteen based on their first summon. A warrior bound to a Fire Bear became a Flame Vanguard. A mage bound to an Elemental Sprite became an Arcane Evoker. A person whose beast was deemed CR 1 or dead was given the social death sentence of Failed Summoner.
Standard Summoner classes were strictly bound by System limits. An Iron-grade Summoner could only maintain one beast bond at a time. A Silver-grade Summoner could hold two. Even the grandest Gold-grade Arch-Summoners of the High Precinct could only command three beasts simultaneously, requiring massive mana reserves and complex soul-anchors to prevent spirit backlash.
Yet his new Class panel plainly stated: [SUMMONED BEASTS: 1 / UNLIMITED (ARCHIVE BOUND)].
"Unlimited..." Kaelen murmured softly, tracing his thumb over the glowing text in mid-air. "The System doesn't manage my summons. The Ancient Archive does."
He focused his intent on the label [ERASED BEAST TAMER]. Instantly, a detailed lore entry expanded across the translucent panel, written in ancient, golden runes that translated smoothly in his mind:
[ERASED BEAST TAMER - CLASS DESCRIPTION] Before the Architects established the Order of Levels and Ratings, the world belonged to those who walked alongside the First Beasts. When the Primal Wars ended and the Architects restructured reality into numeric values, thousands of species were systematically erased from memory and categorized as extinct to maintain the illusion of absolute control.
An Erased Beast Tamer is not a controller or a master of chained beasts. They are the living bridge between the forgotten past and the present—a keeper of species erased from the ledger of history. As an Erased Beast Tamer, your strength grows not merely through personal level, but through the restoration and evolution of forgotten bloodlines.
Kaelen absorbed every word, feeling a strange, profound weight settle over his spirit.
The System that ruled Solis wasn't a natural law of the universe. It was a cage—a grand, numeric framework constructed by the mysterious "Architects" to rank humans, restrict beasts, and dictate who held power and who remained in the gutter. Valerius Vance's Gold-Grade Flame Drake was considered the pinnacle of power because the System willed it to be, while species that could hunt drakes were deleted from the records.
"They erased them because they were afraid of them," Kaelen realized aloud.
Nox opened one golden eye, letting out a small, agreement-filled chirp. The creature nudged Kaelen's hand with its wet nose, leaning into his touch as a faint pulse of dark mana passed between them through their newly strengthened mental link.
Kaelen felt the link clearly now—not as a heavy spiritual chain like standard Summoner contracts, but as a fluid, instinctual connection. He could feel Nox's calm alertness, its lingering satisfaction from the hunt in the Woods, and its unwavering trust in him.
He brought up the secondary tab of his status interface: the Extinction Points (EP) Repository.
[CURRENT EXTINCTION POINTS: 325 EP] [AVAILABLE UPGRADES FOR NOX (VOID-STALKER):]
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
[BLOODLINE REPAIR STAGE 0.4]: Costs 300 EP. Increases Ancestral Density to 4.0%. Unlocks Passive Skill [VOID STEALTH II] and increases True Combat Rating.
[SKILL UPGRADE: VOID-CLAW (LV 2)]: Costs 150 EP. Increases armor penetration and spatial tearing effect by 20%.
[SKILL UPGRADE: PRIMAL COMMAND (LV 2)]: Costs 200 EP. Increases attribute boost to 35% and extends duration to 45 seconds.
[NEW SPECIES UNLOCK: SPECIES 002 (PRIMAL SPIKE-DRAKE)]: Costs 500 EP. Enables summoning of a hatchling Primal Spike-Drake from the Ancient Archive.
Kaelen studied the options carefully.
He currently had 325 EP remaining after the expenditures in the cavern. While unlocking a second extinct species—the Primal Spike-Drake—was incredibly tempting, it required 500 EP. Moreover, bringing a second physical monster into his tiny attic room right now would draw immediate suspicion from Old Bram and the dock wardens.
"Patience," Kaelen cautioned himself. "We need a stable source of income and a secure location before we expand our pack."
He selected [BLOODLINE REPAIR STAGE 0.4] for 300 EP.
[CONFIRM EXPENDITURE: 300 EXTINCTION POINTS?] [TARGET: NOX (VOID-STALKER)]
Kaelen pressed confirm.
A gentle, deep violet light blossomed from Kaelen's hand, enveloping Nox's small body. The black fur along Nox's spine vibrated with dark, harmonic energy, and the tiny creature arched its back with a soft, content sigh. The subtle blur in the air around Nox grew slightly denser, as if light itself was subtly bending around its silhouette.
[UPGRADE COMPLETE!] [NOX (VOID-STALKER) - BLOODLINE REPAIR STAGE 0.4 ACHIEVED] [ANCESTRAL DENSITY: 4.0%] [NEW PASSIVE UNLOCKED: VOID STEALTH II (Improves spatial camouflage in direct sunlight)] [TRUE COMBAT RATING: 285 -> 310] [PUBLIC MASKED COMBAT RATING: 1 (UNCHANGED)]
Kaelen smiled. A True Combat Rating of 310 put Nox almost on par with Valerius's Gold-Grade Flame Drake (CR 380)—and Nox was still only at Stage 0.4 of its bloodline repair! More importantly, the [PUBLIC MASKED COMBAT RATING] remained locked at CR 1. To any Guild appraiser, Academy inspector, or noble using standard System evaluation lenses, Nox would still appear as nothing more than a useless, level-one fur ball.
"That public mask is our greatest weapon," Kaelen whispered, scratching Nox behind its ears. "As long as the world thinks I'm a Failed Summoner, nobody will come looking for us while we build our strength."
Suddenly, the heavy sound of iron boots clanking on stone echoed from the street below, followed by the loud, grating clatter of the morning forge fire being stoked down in the smithy.
Old Bram was awake.
Kaelen quickly closed his translucent System windows, pulled on a dry wool tunic, and scooped Nox onto his shoulder. The tiny creature effortlessly melted into the shadows under his collar, its Void Stealth II making its presence completely imperceptible unless someone was standing inches away.
Kaelen opened his door and climbed down the narrow stairs into the heat of the smithy.
Old Bram stood before the blazing forge, wielding a massive iron hammer as he pounded a glowing bar of scrap metal against the anvil. Sparks showered across his thick leather apron. When he saw Kaelen, he paused, wiping sweat from his bushy grey eyebrows with a thick forearm.
"You're up early, lad," Bram grunted over the roaring bellows. "Thought you'd be sleeping off yesterday's misery."
"I couldn't sleep, Bram," Kaelen replied smoothly, stepping up to help lift a bucket of quenching oil onto the workbench. "I spent the morning cleaning up my things."
Bram looked at Kaelen, his sharp grey eyes searching the boy's face. He expected to see the hollow, defeated stare of every commoner who failed their Awakening. Instead, he found Kaelen's eyes clear, calm, and burning with a quiet, solid resolve that hadn't been there two days ago.
The old blacksmith let out a rumbling chuckle, shaking his head as he set his hammer down.
"Well, you've got guts, I'll give you that," Bram said, tossing a rough linen cloth to Kaelen. "Most kids who get branded Failed Summoners spend three weeks drinking cheap ale in the gutters or crying to their mothers. You look like you're ready to take on the world with a rusty nail."
"Crying won't earn silver, Bram," Kaelen said, catching the cloth. "I need to make a living. And I need to buy supplies."
Bram snorted, turning back to the glowing iron. "Supplies for what? You don't have a Guild hunting license, and Garrick cut your pay at the stables."
Kaelen leaned slightly closer, his voice dropping to a low, guarded tone. "Bram... do you know anyone in the lower district who buys raw monster materials without asking for a Guild License number?"
Bram froze. He lowered his hammer, turning his head slowly to glare at Kaelen.
"Poaching?" Bram asked softly, his tone warning. "The Merchant Guild and the City Guard execute poachers who hunt outside the permitted sectors without a license, Kaelen. The noble houses own the hunting rights to the entire Whispering Woods perimeter."
"I didn't poach in their sectors," Kaelen said truthfully. "I found some old monster remains washed up along the coastal tide caves behind the West Watchtower while I was clearing debris for Garrick yesterday."
Bram stared at Kaelen for five long seconds. Then he wiped his face with his leather apron and let out a heavy sigh.
"Listen to me, lad," Bram whispered, stepping closer. "If you've got materials to sell—and I'm not asking where you got 'em—you don't go to the official Guild halls in the High Precinct. They'll confiscate your goods and throw you in the iron cages for unlicensed trading."
"Where do I go?"
"The Fossil Market," Bram said, his voice barely audible over the crackle of the forge. "In the subterranean cellars beneath the Black Anchor Tavern down in the sunken docks. It's run by the Gray Merchants. They don't care about your Class, your name, or your Guild badge. They only care about the quality of the mana in the bone."
Bram reached into his apron pocket, pulled out a small, tarnished copper token stamped with the image of a cracked skull, and pressed it into Kaelen's hand.
"Show this to the bouncer at the back door of the Black Anchor," Bram gritted out. "And keep your hood low. The men down there aren't dock workers, Kaelen. They're cutthroats, rogue scholars, and disgraced cultivators. If they smell weakness on you, they'll slit your throat for a copper coin."
Kaelen looked down at the cool copper token in his palm, his fingers closing tightly around it.
"Thank you, Bram," Kaelen said sincerely. "I won't forget this."
"Just don't get yourself killed, boy," Bram muttered, turning back to his anvil with a heavy blow of his hammer. "The world's hard enough on Failed Summoners without you ending up as fish food in the bay."
Kaelen nodded, slipping the token into his pocket.
He stepped back out of the smithy into the crisp morning air of the Iron Docks. On his shoulder, beneath the shadow of his linen hood, twin eyes of molten gold gleamed in the dark.
The world called him a Failed Summoner.
The System called his companion a weak CR 1 pest.
But with the Erased Beast Tamer class unlocked and a pocket full of dragon-gate fangs, Kaelen Ashford was about to take his first step into the subterranean underbelly of Oakhaven—and turn the forgotten history of the world into his greatest weapon.
