The canopy of the Whispering Woods grew so dense that the afternoon light was reduced to a gloom of twilight, filtering through ancient pine needles in pale, sickly beams.

Kaelen Ashford crouched behind the sprawling, moss-covered roots of an old ironwood tree, his knuckles white around the worn wooden handle of Old Bram’s hunting knife. Besieged by silence, the forest had suddenly gone unnaturally still. The chirping of tree-beetles and the distant calls of wind-hawks had vanished, swallowed by a heavy, suffocating aura.

Beside him, Nox pressed low against the damp loam. The small black creature was almost invisible among the shadows, its smooth fur absorbing the pale light like a patch of void. Only its twin eyes—luminous pools of molten gold—glimmered with intense focus. Nox’s ears were flattened against its head, its tail twitching with subtle, rhythmic twitches.Full novel: The Weakest Summoner Commands Extinct Monsters — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Through their mental bond, a cold pulse of warning vibrated into Kaelen’s mind.

Danger. Not just anger or territorial aggression, but primal, predatory slaughter.

Minutes earlier, Kaelen had been harvesting the mana core of the Spiked Iron-Boar he and Nox had killed near the rocky clearing. They had gained thirty Extinction Points for the victory, plus another twenty-five when Nox used Void Absorption on the lingering ancient porcupine lineage buried in the beast's bones. It had been a solid first victory—a proof that their combined strength was far beyond what a Combat Rating of one implied.

Then the wolves had come.

Not hunting, but fleeing.

A pack of five Shadow Wolves—large, sleek predators with fur like woven smoke and razor-sharp fangs capable of snapping steel—had tore through the brush twenty yards to the north. Their crimson eyes had been wide with sheer panic, their ears laid back, whining softly as they fled in blind terror.

Kaelen knew enough from his years spent reading discarded beast manuals at the Iron Docks to understand how abnormal that was. Shadow Wolves were the undisputed apex hunters of the outer forest zone. With individual Combat Ratings ranging between 45 and 55, a coordinated pack of five could easily butcher an entire party of Silver-Grade adventurers or tear through a merchant caravan.

For Shadow Wolves to run in blind desperation meant whatever was behind them was a monster from the deeper, darker interior of the forest—something with a Combat Rating well past a hundred.

"Easy, Nox," Kaelen whispered, his breath rising in a tiny pale plume in the cooling air. "We don't move until we know what's out there."

Nox gave a tiny, almost silent huff of agreement, its claws extending half an inch into the soft soil. The delicate black claws gleamed with faint violet light—the subtle activation of its Void-Claw ability.

A soft crunch echoed through the gloom.

It wasn't the heavy, thundering tread of a massive beast. It was light, deliberate, and terrifyingly precise.

Kaelen held his breath, his pulse thumping against his ribs like a war drum. He flattened his back against the tree trunk, angling his vision through a gap between two thick lichen-covered roots.

Thirty paces away, stepping out from behind a fallen, rot-hollowed pine, came the predator.

Kaelen’s eyes narrowed as he took in the creature's silhouette. It was a beast unlike anything described in the standard Kingdom Beast Manuals.

It stood roughly six feet high at the shoulder, its body long, lean, and covered in overlapping scales that looked like dark obsidian glass. It possessed six double-jointed legs, each ending in cruel, curved talons that bit deeply into the soil without making a sound. Its head was long and reptilian, crowned with a jagged ridge of bone, but it lacked eyes entirely; instead, two glowing violet slits ran along its lower jawline, pulsing in rhythm with its heavy breathing.

A long, whip-like tail ended in a three-bladed bone spur, dripping with black, viscous venom that hissed as it dropped onto the dead leaves below.

A translucent System identification lens flickered into Kaelen’s field of vision, summoned by his instinctual inquiry.

[SPECIES: THORN-SCALED RAPTOR] [TIER: SILVER-GRADE (CORRUPTED MUTANT)] [COMBAT RATING: 110] [STATUS: AGGRESSIVE / HUNTING]

A Combat Rating of 110, Kaelen thought, feeling a cold sweat break out across his neck.

Valerius Vance’s prized Flame Drake had a Combat Rating of 380, but that was a domesticated, hand-reared beast under the control of a wealthy noble household with dozens of guards. This Thorn-Scaled Raptor was a wild, bloodthirsty mutant operating on pure predatory instinct in its home environment.

The raptor paused, its elongated snout lifting into the air. Its violet jaw-slits flared brightly as it sampled the scent of blood lingering from Kaelen’s recent fight with the Iron-Boar.

It smells the boar's blood, Kaelen realized. Or worse... it smells us.

In the raptor's left claw, it dragged the limp, bloody carcass of one of the fleeing Shadow Wolves. The wolf's throat had been ripped open with surgical precision, its dark fur soaked in crimson.

The Thorn-Scaled Raptor tossed the wolf's body aside like a rag doll. It let out a low, vibrating click from its throat—a sound that vibrated right through the damp earth and settled in Kaelen’s boots.

CLICK. CLICK. CLICK.

Then, without warning, the raptor spun toward the fallen wolf carcass, raised its massive claw, and began tearing into the creature's chest cavity. It wasn't eating out of hunger. It was searching for something specific—crushing bone and tearing flesh until its talons closed around the wolf’s glowing dark-purple Mana Core.

With a sickening CRUNCH, the raptor crushed the Mana Core between its jaws and swallowed it whole.

A strange ripple of dark magic surged across the raptor's glass-like scales. The violet slits along its jaw burned brighter, and the bone spurs along its spine expanded by several inches, glistening with fresh venom.

[WARNING: SYSTEM ENTITY ABSORBING UNREFINED MANA CORE] [TEMPORARY COMBAT RATING INCREASE: 110 -> 125]

Kaelen felt a chill run down his spine. The creature was actively hunting the local wolf pack to consume their mana cores and force an artificial evolution.

Beside him, Nox trembled—not with fear, but with a sudden, violent surge of instinct. The tiny black cat-like beast bared its small, needle-sharp fangs. A low, purring growl vibrated deep within its throat, resonant with an ancient hatred that seemed to transcend time itself.

Nox knows this thing, Kaelen realized through their mental link. No... not this specific beast, but its nature. A corrupted scavenger.

Nox’s golden eyes burned with an intensity Kaelen had never seen before. A faint, translucent System text flashed before Kaelen’s eyes, visible only to him.

[ANCIENT ARCHIVE RESONANCE DETECTED] [SPECIES ANCESTORS IDENTIFIED: THORN-SCALED RAPTOR IS A DEGENERATED DESCENDANT OF THE PRIMAL SPIKE-DRAKE] [ERASED SPECIES AFFINITY: HIGH] [EXTINCTION RECOVERY POTENTIAL: EXTREME]

Kaelen’s breath caught in his throat.

The Thorn-Scaled Raptor wasn't just a random mutant beast. Its distant ancestors were part of an erased dragon-lineage—the Primal Spike-Drake—that had been suppressed and degenerated over centuries until only this mindless, murderous shell remained.

If Nox could kill it and absorb its remaining ancestral fragments, the Extinction Points reward would be massive.

But it’s CR 125, Kaelen reminded himself sternly. Nox’s True Combat Rating is 62 after our upgrades. I have a steel hunting knife. If we mess up the timing, one strike from that venomous tail will kill us both in seconds.

Yet, opportunity in this world never came with a guarantee of safety. Kaelen had spent eighteen years at the bottom of the world, shoveling dung and eating scraps because he lacked power. If he backed away every time he faced a threat superior on paper, he would remain a "Failed Summoner" for the rest of his life.

A case of content theft: this narrative is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

We don't fight it head-on, Kaelen decided, his mind growing sharp and clear. We use the terrain. We use Nox’s stealth. And we strike before it finishes digesting that mana core.

He looked down at Nox and transmitted a silent message through their soul bond.

Can you blind its jaw-slits? It has no eyes—it relies entirely on those heat-sensing violet slits.

Nox blinked its golden eyes once, giving a barely perceptible nod. Its body melted further into the shadows, utilizing its Shadow Sense and Silent Tread to fade into complete visual near-invisibility.

Wait for my signal, Kaelen thought.

Kaelen slowly reached into his leather belt pouch. He pulled out a heavy iron spike—a tool he had borrowed from Bram’s smithy—and a fist-sized chunk of quartz-heavy rock he had picked up near the stream.

He backed away three paces, stepping with agonizing care until he reached a tangle of dry thorny briars twenty yards to the west of the raptor.

Kaelen inhaled sharply, braced his arm, and hurled the iron spike with all his strength into the trunk of a hollow hollowed oak tree fifty yards away on the opposite side of the clearing.

CLANG!

The sharp metallic impact echoed loudly through the quiet woods.

Instantly, the Thorn-Scaled Raptor whirled around. Its violet jaw-slits flared blindingly, its six legs tensing as it hissed, focusing all its sensory perception toward the source of the metallic noise.

"Now, Nox!" Kaelen roared, springing out from behind the tree.

SWOOSH!

From the shadow of a low-hanging branch directly above the raptor, a tiny black streak dropped like a falling star.

Nox activated Agility Boost I and Void-Claw simultaneously. Its body accelerated in mid-air, its front paws bursting with ethereal violet energy that elongated its claws into four-inch blades of pure spatial force.

SLASH!

Before the Thorn-Scaled Raptor could even turn its head, Nox landed squarely on the creature's reptilian snout. With terrifying precision, Nox raked its spatial claws across the glowing violet jaw-slits on the right side of the raptor's face.

"SCREEEECH!"

A horrific, ear-splitting shriek tore from the raptor's throat as dark, purple blood erupted from its destroyed sensory slits. Blended with spatial energy, the wound burned like acid, searing the underlying flesh.

The beast thrashed wildly, its massive whip-like tail snapping around in a blind arc.

CRACK!

The tail smashed into a three-foot-wide pine tree, shattering the trunk like dry kindling and showering the area with wood splinters and needles.

Nox had already pushed off the raptor's head, tumbling gracefully through the air and landing silently on a mossy stone ten feet away, completely untouched.

"Over here, you ugly bastard!" Kaelen screamed, drawing the beast's remaining sensory focus toward him.

He knew the beast was half-blinded now, disoriented and enraged. It couldn't pinpoint exact movement on its right side, but its left jaw-slits were still intact and scanning wildly.

The raptor lunged toward Kaelen’s voice, its six legs tearing up the loam in a terrifying blur of obsidian scales and snapping jaws.

Kaelen didn't run away. He stood his ground until the creature was only ten feet away, smelling the foul copper stench of wolf blood and venom dripping from its jaws.

At the final second, Kaelen dove sideways into a dry drainage gully buried beneath thick fern leaves.

BOOM!

The raptor's massive snout crashed directly into the exposed granite boulder behind where Kaelen had been standing. The impact stunned the beast for a fraction of a second, spiderwebbing cracks across its bone crest and throwing it off balance.

NOW!

Nox didn't need a verbal command. Utilizing the full speed of its Agility Boost I, the black creature shot across the ground like a shadow sliding over ice. It leaped onto the raptor's back, sprinting up its obsidian scales until it reached the base of the skull—the vulnerable junction where the thick scales met the spinal column.

VOID-CLAW!

Nox plunged both front paws deep into the soft cartilage between the beast's neck vertebrae.

The spatial energy coating Nox’s claws bypassed the beast's physical armor entirely, slicing directly through the spinal nerve bundle.

The Thorn-Scaled Raptor froze mid-roar. Its six legs buckled instantly, its massive obsidian body crashing onto the damp soil with a heavy, wet thud.

It thrashed weakly, its tail twitching once, twice, before going completely limp. Its remaining jaw-slits flickered dim violet, then went dark.

Silence returned to the Whispering Woods.

Kaelen scrambled out of the gully, coughing as he brushed dirt and dead fern leaves from his tunic. His heart was hammering against his ribs so hard it felt painful, his knuckles trembling as he held Bram's hunting knife ready.

He cautiously approached the fallen beast.

Nox was perched atop the raptor's head, licks its tiny black paw with an air of nonchalant satisfaction, its golden eyes glittering brightly in the dim light.

A cascade of golden System notifications erupted in Kaelen’s field of vision, flashing in rapid succession.

[TARGET DEFEATED: THORN-SCALED RAPTOR (CORRUPTED MUTANT)] [COMBAT RATING: 125] [VICTORY EVALUATION: PERFECT TACTICAL AMBUSH] [EXP GAINED] [EXTINCTION POINTS ACQUIRED: +150 EP!]

Kaelen gasped. One hundred and fifty Extinction Points in a single fight!

Before he could process the massive point gain, a second, far larger System window materialized in dark crimson text—the hallmark of the Ancient Archive.

[ANCIENT ARCHIVE TRIGGERED!] [ABSORBING ERADICATED GENETIC FRAGMENTS OF: PRIMAL SPIKE-DRAKE] [EXTINCTION RECOVERY IN PROGRESS...]

Nox leaned down and pressed its snout against the raptor's shattered skull. A brilliant stream of dark violet and emerald light seeped out from the dead beast's forehead, flowing into Nox’s body like liquid starlight.

Nox purred loudly, its small fur shuddering as its muscles expanded slightly, its black coat gaining an iridescent, diamond-like sheen under the dim forest canopy.

[VOID ABSORPTION COMPLETE!] [EXTINCTION POINTS ACQUIRED: +200 EP!] [TOTAL EXTINCTION POINTS: 375 EP]

[NEW SPECIES RECORD UNLOCKED IN ANCIENT BESTIARY:] [SPECIES 002: PRIMAL SPIKE-DRAKE (TIER 0 - FOSSILIZED)] [BLOODLINE RESTORATION PROGRESS: 12%]

[NOX'S TRUE COMBAT RATING INCREASED: 62 -> 88!] [PUBLIC SYSTEM DISPLAY: COMBAT RATING 1 (CAMOUFLAGED)]

Kaelen stared at the floating windows in absolute disbelief.

375 Extinction Points! And Nox’s True Combat Rating had surged to 88! It was almost at the threshold of a Silver-Grade elite beast, yet to the rest of the world, Nox still looked like a harmless, five-pound black kitten with a Combat Rating of one.

"We did it, buddy," Kaelen breathed, dropping to his knees beside the dead raptor and pulling Nox into a gentle embrace. "We actually did it."

Nox nuzzled its wet nose against Kaelen’s cheek, emitting a soft, contentment-filled purr.

As Kaelen began using his knife to harvest the raptor's valuable obsidian scales and mana core, Nox suddenly lifted its head. Its ears twitched toward the deep, mist-veiled gorge to the north—the inner zone of Whispering Woods.

From deep within the fog, a low, unnatural pulse of mana echoed through the earth—a rhythm that sounded remarkably like a heartbeat.

A ancient, dormant heartbeat.

Kaelen froze, looking toward the dark forest ahead.

Something far bigger than a raptor is resting in those woods, he realized.

And for the first time in his life, Kaelen Ashford didn't feel fear. He felt ready.
