A flood of filthy thoughts suddenly rushed into her head, and Su Wanwan finally understood the Queen of the Women’s Kingdom. With her dear brother right there, who could resist?

She cleared her throat and bent down to blow on the reddened back of Gu Shiyan’s hand.Full novel: The Wicked Wife of the 1970s Has Quadruplets, and the Research Genius Kneels to Pamper Her — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The soft breath brushed against his hand, and Gu Shiyan went rigid all over.

He quickly glanced around. Seeing no one nearby, he let out a breath of relief and reminded her in a hoarse voice, “Mind the impression.”

Su Wanwan hadn’t meant anything by it. She only wanted to seize every chance to build goodwill. But at his words, the mischievous streak in her heart poked its head up instead. She fixed him with a burning stare.

Gu Shiyan felt his skin crawl under the look.

Every time Su Wanwan looked at him like that, she wanted to get intimate.

Incredulous, he stepped back.

“We’re outside. Rein it in.”

Su Wanwan blinked innocently. “What did I do?”

Gu Shiyan cleared his throat and lowered his voice. “If you want to, you can wait until tonight.”

At that, Su Wanwan finally couldn’t hold it in. She burst out laughing, and as she laughed, she poked Gu Shiyan’s chest.

“Comrade Gu, what exactly are you thinking about in broad daylight? I didn’t do anything. You’re the one whose mind went crooked.”

Gu Shiyan was speechless.

He turned and walked off in embarrassment.

From Su Wanwan’s angle, she could see the tips of his ears had gone red. That only made her want to laugh more.

The two walked one after the other along the village road. When they were almost home, Gu Shiyan suddenly turned onto another path.

“I’m going to the barefoot doctor’s.”

Xiahe Village had no clinic, only a barefoot doctor. Villagers usually went to him for headaches and fevers. Su Wanwan guessed Gu Shiyan was going to buy some red mercurochrome. She stopped by the roadside to wait for him.

A few minutes later, instead of Gu Shiyan, two unlucky sights came her way.

Lin Zhixia and Zhou Mingyuan.

They saw Su Wanwan too.

“Wanwan, I heard your husband had an accident.”

Concern showed on Lin Zhixia’s face, but the gloating in her eyes was impossible to hide. Without waiting for Su Wanwan to speak, she went on, “You really are ill-fated. Married only a few months and your man’s already dead…”

Zhou Mingyuan wore a look of sympathy too.

“Sister Wanwan, my condolences.”

Gu Shiyan really was a short-lived ghost. He married Su Wanwan but had no fortune to enjoy her. Good that he’s dead. It’ll make it easier for me and Su Wanwan to rekindle what we had. These past few months, watching Su Wanwan with Gu Shiyan, I’ve been miserable.

He was just about to offer more comfort when his face suddenly went wet.

Su Wanwan spat right at him. “You’re the one who needs condolences! You and your whole family!”

Zhou Mingyuan froze. He wiped his face quickly, and his whole expression collapsed.

“Wanwan, you… you spat on me?”

They used to be so close. Su Wanwan couldn’t bear to say a harsh word to him. Now she was humiliating him like this?

Zhou Mingyuan looked utterly devastated.

Su Wanwan sneered. “I spit on you, and I’d throw mud at you too. You dog mouth that can’t produce anything but garbage. My man is alive and well, and you tell me condolences. Say that again and I’ll knock every tooth out of your head!”

Zhou Mingyuan was speechless.

Wait. Gu Shiyan isn’t dead?

Seeing her man bullied, Lin Zhixia wasn’t about to take it lying down either. She charged forward like a mother hen protecting her chick. And she got exactly the gift she deserved.

Ding. Your delivery of spit has arrived. Please sign for it.

Lin Zhixia screamed, “Ahhh!”

She wiped her face furiously with her sleeve.

“Su Wanwan, you’re disgusting!”

“Only a disgusting person deserves such a disgusting method from me.”

Su Wanwan planted her hands on her hips. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a familiar figure approaching. She immediately put on a pout and ran toward him.

“Gu Shiyan, they’re bullying me!”

Lin Zhixia was speechless.

Zhou Mingyuan was speechless too.

There’s no justice in the world. Who’s bullying who here?!

After they got home, Gu Shiyan applied mercurochrome to Su Wanwan’s finger.

His movements were very light. His thin lips were pressed into a straight line, his focus total.

“Does it still hurt?”

Su Wanwan had wanted to say no, but on second thought, the original host was a complete delicate little thing. She couldn’t afford too big a contrast. So she dragged out the word and cried about the pain, telling Gu Shiyan to be gentler.

“You’re hurting me.”

“Gentler. That’s too hard.”

The girl’s soft, tender voice reached his ears like a hook. Gu Shiyan inexplicably felt short of breath, a layer of sweat breaking out on his back.

The weather really was getting hotter and hotter.

After applying the medicine, Su Wanwan told Gu Shiyan to sit down.

“I’ll apply medicine for you.”

Gu Shiyan stayed standing. “This little injury doesn’t need it.”

Su Wanwan didn’t waste words on him. She pushed him down onto the bed and spoke in an overbearing tone. “Don’t move. Move again and I won’t guarantee what happens.”

Gu Shiyan was confused.

He suspected Su Wanwan hadn’t hurt her hand. She’d hurt her brain.

Su Wanwan, meanwhile, was secretly enjoying herself.

No wonder domineering CEOs in novels loved saying outrageous things. This feeling wasn’t bad at all.

After the medicine was applied, Gu Shiwei came back too.

She also brought a piece of gossip.

“Sister-in-law, just now on my way back I saw Lin Zhixia arguing with her man. Lin Zhixia was crying from anger, accusing Zhou Mingyuan of not having her in his heart. Zhou Mingyuan was really impatient with her. The two almost came to blows.”

Su Wanwan was delighted to hear it.

“Serves her right.”

Gu Shiyan watched her laugh, and a vague thought rose in his heart. If only Su Wanwan could always be like this.

Over the next few days, Su Wanwan went up the mountain again.

She wanted to find the little fox and see how its injury was healing. While she was at it, she’d gather more herbs.

Gu Shiwei came along too, as did several of the village women Su Wanwan was close with. They chatted and laughed their way up the mountain. On the way, they ran into Lin Zhixia and the original host’s second sister-in-law, Liang Xuemei.

Neither of them looked happy to see Su Wanwan.

Lin Zhixia went without saying. Her loathing for the original host had never faded for a moment.

The original host’s second sister-in-law was displeased because her husband occasionally subsidized his little sister. The two sisters-in-law had never gotten along.

Su Wanwan wasn’t about to press a warm face to Liang Xuemei’s cold backside either.

She pulled Gu Shiwei along to look for herbs and taught her how to identify them.

Gu Shiwei learned fast. Before long, she actually found gastrodia under a piece of rotting wood.

“Sister-in-law, come quick! Is this an herb?”

She hurried to call Su Wanwan over.

Su Wanwan came to look, and delight immediately burst into her eyes. “Little sister, you’re amazing!”

Gastrodia had high medicinal value. It was a precious Chinese herb.

Wild gastrodia would later be a nationally protected second-class plant, with digging and trading strictly forbidden. That alone showed its worth.

Gu Shiwei was so excited her little face flushed red.

“Is this worth a lot?”

“Yes. Much more than wood ear mushrooms or regular mushrooms.”

The aunties nearby heard this and crowded around, all praising Gu Shiwei’s luck.

Lin Zhixia and Liang Xuemei exchanged a glance, each seeing envy in the other’s eyes.

Why hadn’t such a precious herb been found by them?

After that, the two stopped digging wild greens and gathering mushrooms. They focused on poking through cracks in rocks and piles of dead leaves. After searching for a long while, Lin Zhixia actually got lucky. She found quite a few wild chrysanthemums.

Liang Xuemei immediately shouted loudly.

“Wow, so many wild chrysanthemums! These will definitely sell for a lot of money!”

“Naturally. Wild chrysanthemums clear heat and detoxify. They’ll surely fetch a better price than that gastrodia or whatever it was.”

As Lin Zhixia spoke, she shot a sidelong glance toward Su Wanwan, looking unbearably smug.
