The world beyond the Silent Rift had no name.

Perhaps it never had.

There was no sky to measure the passing of time, no earth to distinguish one horizon from another.Full novel: The World Forgot My Name — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Endless darkness stretched in every direction, interrupted only by rivers of pale silver light that drifted silently through the void like memories searching for someone who could still remember them.

Among those countless streams floated a single island.

It was impossibly small.

Barely large enough to support the lonely tree growing at its center.

Its trunk was white as polished ivory, while its leaves shimmered with a faint golden glow despite the absence of any sun.

Every few moments, one leaf detached itself from the branches and floated upward instead of falling, disappearing into the endless darkness above.

Beneath that tree…

Someone slept.

She rested with her back against the ancient trunk, wrapped in a cloak the color of the night sky.

Long silver hair spilled across the white grass surrounding her, moving gently despite the complete absence of wind.

She might have been sleeping.

Or perhaps…

She had simply forgotten how to wake.

A single golden leaf drifted through the air.

It landed softly upon her hand.

For the first time in an eternity…

Her fingers moved.

The movement was so slight that the island itself seemed to react.

The rivers of silver light paused.

The darkness trembled.

Far away…

Countless stars flickered at once.

Slowly…

The young woman opened her eyes.

They were unlike anything the world had ever seen.

One burned with liquid gold.

The other…

Contained an entire night sky.

She looked upward without speaking.

As though listening.

Waiting.

Then…

She smiled.

“…You’re late.” Her voice carried no accusation.

Only relief.

Across the endless sea of darkness, something answered.

A ripple.

Nothing more.

Yet every river of silver light bent toward it.

From within the shadows, footsteps echoed.

Not loud.

Not hurried.

Measured.

Patient.

A man emerged from the darkness wearing robes that seemed woven from fragments of forgotten constellations.

His face remained hidden beneath a hood, though the countless silver threads embroidered across his cloak shimmered each time he moved.

He stopped several paces from the tree.

“You felt it.” It wasn’t a question.

The young woman nodded once.

“He remembered.” The hooded man remained silent.

For a long while, neither of them spoke.

Words seemed unnecessary in a place where even memories possessed weight.

Finally…

“He remembers too soon.” The woman laughed quietly.

The sound carried through the empty world like the first note of a forgotten song.

“No.” She gently closed her hand around the golden leaf.

“He remembers far too late.” The hooded man lowered his head.

“The cycle has already begun.” “I know.” “They’ll come for him.” “I know.” “They’ll try to erase him again.” This time…

The woman looked toward the endless darkness surrounding the island.

Her expression softened.

“…They never understood.” The hooded man waited.

“They believed…” she whispered, “…that forgetting him would save the world.” She slowly rose to her feet.

The moment she did…

The ancient tree behind her blossomed.

Thousands of golden leaves illuminated the darkness.

“…All they did…” She smiled sadly.

“…was make the world forget how to survive.” Far away.

Beyond the island.

Beyond the rivers of memory.

Beyond even the Silent Rift.

A pair of enormous eyes opened.

There was no body.

No shape.

Only eyes.

Larger than kingdoms.

Older than stars.

They stared toward the tiny island for what might have been a single heartbeat…

Or a thousand years.

Then…

They blinked.

One of the rivers of silver light disappeared forever.

The woman watched it vanish.

“…Another one.” The hooded man followed her gaze.

“There won’t be many left.” “No.” She looked toward the darkness where the river had once flowed.

“But we only need one.” At that exact moment…

Far below.

Within the peaceful dormitories of Aetherion Academy.

Lyra awoke.

She sat upright so suddenly that her blanket slipped onto the floor.

Her breathing was uneven.

Her heart raced for reasons she couldn’t explain.

The room was silent.

Moonlight spilled through the open window, illuminating the familiar shelves, books and sketches decorating the walls.

Everything was exactly where it should have been.

Yet…

She couldn’t stop crying.

Warm tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

Not tears of fear.

Not pain.

Longing.

As though she had spent her entire life searching for someone whose face she could no longer remember.

She pressed a trembling hand against her chest.

“…Why…” The question escaped into the empty room.

No answer came.

Almost unconsciously, she rose from her bed and walked toward the window.

Above Dawnhaven…

The night sky stretched endlessly.

She stared at it for several moments before a single sentence left her lips.

So quietly…

Even she barely heard it.

“…I found you.” She froze.

Confusion spread across her face.

“…Who…” The wind answered by carrying one silver leaf across the moonlit sky.

Then…

Everything became silent once more.
