Wen Xi nodded in understanding. “Alright.”

Shu, the shop manager, handed her a form to fill in her personal information and current residence.

Wen Xi carefully filled it out as required. After thinking for a moment, she wrote “unmarried” in the marital status section, and listed her residence as the military compound dormitory.Full novel: Three Years of a Fake Marriage? Her marriage certificate with Song Mingyuan was fake, and that man insisted she was only a goddaughter of the Song family. They had no real marital relationship, and Wen Xi was unwilling to label herself as married.

Seeing that she lived in the military compound, Manager Shu smiled and said, “People living in the military compound have an advantage. Your certificate will be processed quickly.”

“Let’s hope so. Thank you, Manager Shu, for giving me this opportunity.”

“Haha, Comrade Wen, you really are pleasant to talk to. You’ve also helped us a great deal.”

Manager Shu took out two journals and placed them into a document bag.

“The initial payment will be calculated as a junior-level translation fee. The exact amount will be determined after submission.

The deadline is one month. If you agree, you only need to pay a 10-yuan deposit to accept the assignment.”

“Alright!” Wen Xi replied decisively. “I’ll try to submit it as soon as possible.”

She took out money from her pocket and handed over a ten-yuan note. Their first cooperation was officially confirmed.

“Director Ji, I’m going to the city to look around and buy some things, so I won’t return with your car. You two can continue your discussion—I’ll head off first.”

She put the document bag into her own bag and stood up to leave.

Naturally, both of them tried to keep her, especially Director Ji, who had brought her here. How could they let a young woman return alone?

“Comrade Wen, we originally planned to take you to the state-owned restaurant for a meal. How can we just let you leave? And I can’t feel at ease letting you walk around the city alone.”

Wen Xi waved her thick arm.

“With my build, who would dare have bad intentions toward me? Thank you both for your kindness.”

“I’m really fine with skipping the meal. I’m losing weight right now and have to strictly control my diet. If I don’t, it’ll affect my health.”

Hearing this, the two of them could only give up and reminded her to be safe before letting her leave.

Such a rare talent—everyone hoped she would stay healthy so she could contribute more to the country.

After arriving in the city, Wen Xi decided to take a good look around and buy things unavailable at supply stores, such as medicinal seeds.

Growing only grains and vegetables in her space was not enough. She wanted to cultivate medicinal herbs as well, especially rare ones.

Right now, the entire country was focused on grain production, and almost no one grew medicinal herbs.

Scarcity meant high prices.

Even though she wasn’t a doctor, she could use her space to cultivate high-quality herbs and sell them to hospitals or pharmacies when appropriate—helping people get good medicine while earning income.

Another reason was her original body’s parents had been sent down for three years, and their health was likely poor. After finding them, she would need medicinal herbs along with spring water to help restore their bodies.

It wouldn’t be possible to recover health with just spring water alone.

After asking around, Wen Xi went straight to the city’s only agricultural market.

She walked around and bought all kinds of medicinal seeds and seedlings, vegetable seeds she didn’t have in her space, and fruit saplings.

She also wanted to buy piglets, lambs, and calves, but unfortunately there were none—only chickens, ducks, and geese. She would have to think of another way.

When she left the market, her hands were full. She found an empty alley, confirmed no one was watching, and stored everything in her space.

She also learned that there was a traditional Chinese medicine hospital in Lan City. After getting the address, she made a special trip to take a look.

Once her medicinal herbs were grown, she planned to see whether the hospital would purchase them.

After a full day of walking, her legs felt so tired she didn’t want to move. She had easily walked 20,000 to 30,000 steps.

She only ate two boiled eggs and an apple, and drank a cup of spring water. With this level of exercise and strict dieting, she wouldn’t be surprised if she lost one or two pounds today.

Seeing that it was getting late, she took the bus back to the military compound, got off near the machinery factory, and jogged the rest of the way.

As dusk settled, warm yellow lights glowed in the courtyard, and windows of each household emitted soft light.

When she was almost back at her dormitory, she saw four people standing at her door.

“Wen Xi, where have you been all day? Do you know we came to find you several times?”

Having been turned away multiple times, Song Mingyuan was already full of anger. The moment he saw her, he immediately began accusing her impatiently.

Wen Xi rolled her eyes at him.

“What I do doesn’t require reporting to you. Even if you came ten times a day, I still wouldn’t want to see you unless you’re here to return my things.”

“You kept saying you’re some soft-boiled kept man who climbed up by relying on others—a scumbag. People may treasure you, but I don’t. I’m not your mother—I have no obligation to tolerate you.”

“Being in the same space as you makes the air feel polluted and hard to breathe. If you have something to say, say it. If not, get lost—and return my things first.”

She ranted without holding back, not even glancing at the middle-aged man and woman beside him.

It didn’t take a guess to know—they were his in-laws, brought here to pressure her using status.

Song Mingyuan felt like his chest was stuffed with a bellows, anger surging so violently it felt like he would explode. His eyes widened with fury, veins popping on his neck and forehead like writhing worms.

“I didn’t come here to argue,” he said, forcing himself to calm down. “As you wished, I’m here to return your things. This is my father-in-law, Chief of Staff Jiang, and my mother-in-law, Teacher Liu.”

Liu Hui adjusted her glasses and said with a fake smile, “Young comrade, let’s sit down and talk properly.”

Chief of Staff Jiang stood silently, only giving her a stern look and a slight nod.

Since they had brought the elders, Wen Xi also wanted to see what they would say next. She took out her key and opened the door.

“Alright, come in.”

Her expression was cold, not as sharp as before but still far from friendly.

The small dorm room suddenly felt cramped with five people inside. There was only one bed and one chair.

“Chief of Staff Jiang and Teacher Liu can sit on the bed. The rest of you can stand.”

After speaking, she sat on the chair, ignoring Song Mingyuan’s dark, furious face, and held out her hand.

“Didn’t you say you were returning my things? Give them to me now.”

Song Mingyuan still wanted to use the watch and money as leverage, so he hesitated.

“That’s worth about five thousand yuan—I can’t bear to give it up so soon.”

“Wen Xi, since we agreed to return them, we won’t go back on our word. Let’s talk first. About your earlier demand to publish a public apology in the newspaper—what if we exchange that for other conditions?”

“No!”

Wen Xi’s eyes sharpened instantly. She shot up from the chair like a porcupine bristling with spikes.
