Gunfire was especially piercing in the quiet night, mixed with women’s screams, the sound of heavy objects crashing to the ground, and chaotic footsteps running in all directions.

“Captain He, you—”

Wen Xi, who had been dreaming of gnawing on a pork trotter, was jolted awake by the sudden explosion of noise. She had just gotten up from bed and hadn’t even put on her shoes when—bang!—her door was kicked open violently.

A man a little over 1.7 meters tall, wearing blue work clothes, rushed in and grabbed Wen Xi’s arm. A pitch-black gun was pressed against her temple.

“Don’t come any closer. If you take one more step, I’ll blow her brains out.”

Two public security officers who had just reached the doorway skidded to a stop, raising their guns at him.

Wen Xi blinked, her sleepy eyes slowly turning sharp with irritation.

Damn it. A good dream interrupted—and now she was being taken hostage.

“Throw down your guns. Get me a car and let me leave, or I’ll blow up this guesthouse! Everyone here can go down with me—worth it!”

Explosives were strapped around the man’s waist. His face showed the determination of someone ready to die together with everyone else. His widened eyes were filled with bloodshot veins, like a fire ignited by madness and brutality.

“Don’t act rashly. As long as you don’t hurt the hostage, we can discuss anything.”

“We’ll put our guns down.”

The two officers tried to stabilize him, slowly lowering their weapons as they crouched down.

At that moment, Wen Xi was still sitting on the bed. The man yanked her up forcefully—only then realizing she was actually half a head taller than him and even more solidly built.

After a brief moment of shock, a hint of satisfaction flashed in his eyes. This was the perfect human shield. If the police fired, he could hide behind her. Her build would protect him completely.

Wen Xi did not miss that fleeting look of calculation.

Damn it. Not much harm—but extremely insulting.

Any woman would be sensitive about being called fat, even mentally.

Before the man could feel pleased for even two seconds, Wen Xi moved like lightning. One hand seized his wrist holding the gun, the other gripped his shoulder. With a twist of her body—

A clean, decisive over-the-shoulder throw.

The man felt the world spin violently.

“Aaaah—!”

A scream even more miserable than a slaughtered pig echoed through the room.

Bang!

The man who had just been threatening to blow up the guesthouse and die together with everyone was slammed onto the hard floor like a rag sack.

It wasn’t over.

Wen Xi sat directly on his stomach.

Damn it. Trying to use her as a human shield? Let’s see how you like this.

The man immediately felt as if a thousand-pound hammer had crushed his organs. Pain wracked his body and he let out another agonized scream.

Then Wen Xi grabbed both his hands and twisted hard in the opposite direction.

Two crisp cracking sounds rang out.

His wrists were broken.

His screams rose another octave, so sharp it made everyone’s scalp tingle.

The entire room—no, the entire guesthouse—fell into deathly silence.

Everyone stood frozen, stunned by the sudden reversal.

No one expected this seemingly strong, sturdy girl to be so ruthless and skilled.

Wen Xi calmly stood up, dusted off her hands.

“Officers, what are you standing there for? Arrest him.”

Everyone snapped back to reality, and the police immediately moved in to restrain the man writhing in pain on the ground.

The explosives strapped to him were quickly removed.

“Comrade, you’ve really impressed us. Thank you so much today. Truly—heroes come from the people. You saved everyone here.”

The officers looked at Wen Xi with growing admiration. With this strength and skill, she would be perfect for the public security bureau.

Wen Xi smiled slightly. “Can I ask what crime he committed?”

Since she had helped with the arrest, asking shouldn’t be a problem.

“He’s an enemy spy who has been hiding in our county for many years.”

Now that the suspect was caught, and this young woman had made a major contribution, there was nothing to hide.

At the mention of “enemy spy,” Wen Xi’s smile vanished. Cold contempt replaced it as she looked down at the man like a stray dog.

“A defeated country that can’t accept losing is only fit to be rats hiding in the shadows. Back when we were weak, you weren’t our match. Now that our country is rising, you have even less of a chance!”

“No matter how many people you send, the result will still be the same—caught!”

“Do you still think we are as easy to bully as before?”

Her words reflected the thoughts of everyone present and the pride of the nation.

The officers felt their blood boil, their admiration for Wen Xi growing even stronger.

Before they could ask her name—

A shout suddenly rang out: “Captain He!”

He Chengxiao had been injured earlier while chasing the enemy spy to protect his comrades. Then, downstairs, he had taken another knife wound protecting the front desk staff.

Now, after confirming the enemy spy was caught, he finally collapsed.

In the dim hallway light, his lower body was soaked in blood, his face pale from blood loss.

“Quick, take Captain He to the county hospital! The rest of you escort the prisoner!” Officer Liu Shengli ordered immediately.

“Yes, Deputy Chief!”

In moments, everyone dispersed.

“Comrade officer, I have hemostatic medicine. We can treat his wound first before the car arrives. We can’t let him keep bleeding like this.”

Wen Xi had been abandoned as a baby in her original world and raised by a retired soldier. That was where she learned martial arts.

Because of that, she had always felt a deep connection to soldiers and couldn’t stand by and watch someone bleed without doing anything.

After transmigrating, she had access to a spatial spring that could heal injuries. She wanted to help this soldier who had risked his life to catch an enemy spy.

They would not meet again after this anyway.

“Alright. Thank you, comrade. My name is Liu Shengli, deputy director of the county public security bureau. If you ever need anything, come find me.”

Since it was inappropriate to enter her room, Liu Shengli helped loosen He Chengxiao’s clothing to make treatment easier.

Wen Xi searched through her luggage, using it as cover to take out spring water from her space, along with common medicines like anti-inflammatory drugs, hemostatic powder, and bandages.

She crouched beside He Chengxiao and finally saw his face clearly.

He was tall and strikingly handsome, with long legs like chopsticks and a height close to 1.9 meters.

His closed eyes and bloodless lips gave him a fragile, almost broken beauty—like a top-tier actor straight out of the entertainment industry.

Wen Xi only let herself think that for a moment before focusing on the wound.

A long gash across his abdomen—deep enough to expose bone, flesh torn open, blood still flowing nonstop.

Her expression tightened. Without saying a word, she poured the spring water onto gauze and cleaned the wound, then applied medicine and wrapped it layer by layer.

Her pressure was precise—neither too loose to fall off nor too tight to restrict circulation.

By the time she finished, sweat had formed on her forehead.

As expected, the bleeding stopped. Both of them finally relaxed.

“Comrade, thank you so much. May I ask your name and where you’re from? We must reward you for your help tonight.”
