Long ago, humanity did not operate with a specific system. People lived normally. No ranks, no powers, just life.

But then, something changed. Thousands of years ago, reality was damaged. A cosmic rupture opened somewhere beyond the planet. This event became known as: ’The Great Fracture of the Origin Layer.’ When it occurred, space became unstable, unknown energy flooded the planet, monsters began mutating, dimensions weakened, gravity and mana became corrupted. This energy was not natural; it was an anomaly that forced the world to produce horrors. People disappeared, entire cities collapsed, and creatures evolved beyond the laws of natural biology.

Humanity teetered on the brink of extinction. To prevent total annihilation, the planet adapted to this alien energy, leading to the birth of Awakeners and the implementation of the Tier System.Full novel: Tier Zero: Ascension Beyond All Tiers — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The System exists to awaken human potential, rank survival capability, guide evolution, prepare humanity for future threats. The System does not choose favorites. It evaluates, It measures, and forces growth. People who cannot adapt are left behind.

Not every human can survive exposure to fractured energy. Only certain individuals developed an awakening compatibility.

These individuals become Awakeners--humans whose bodies adapt to the world’s altered laws.

Their physiology evolve to survive corrupted energy. Awakeners gain enhanced physical ability, mana control, elemental affinity, combat instincts, spiritual growth, and unique traits. Some awakeners are weak. Others become living disasters.

The awakeners are not superheroes. They are humanity’s defense force. Their task is to eliminate corrupted entities, protect cities, investigate spatial fractures, prevent monster outbreaks, explore forbidden zones, and stop dimensional corruption from spreading.

The night sky was a vast abyss, drowning the world beneath an ocean of living darkness. Thick storm clouds churned overhead like ancient beasts locked in an eternal struggle, their monstrous forms twisting violently across the heavens. The wind howled through the desolate landscape, carrying jagged whispers that sounded almost human--almost pleading. A sudden flash of lightning split the sky.

For a single heartbeat, the world was bathed in a ghostly, monochromatic white illumination. Then came the thunder.

The earth trembled beneath the deafening roar, as if the heavens themselves had declared a war of attrition upon the mortal realm. Another flash flickered. Something massive moved within the upper atmosphere. At first, it presented as a mere shadow--a colossal silhouette masked behind shifting curtains of tempest and gloom. Yet with every subsequent burst of lightning, the creature unveiled more of its terrifying anatomy. Jagged pairs of horns pierced the cloud line. Vast, monolithic wings unfurled like black sails, stretching from horizon to horizon. Scales gleamed with the luster of polished obsidian beneath the storm’s fury. The clouds swirled around the beast as though they were its bound servants.

Then, it opened its eyes.

Two brilliant blue lights ignited within the heart of the vortex. Their radiance was cold, majestic, and heavy with the weight of stars born before time itself. Far below, living creatures scattered and fled into the dark like black crows, seized by an instinctive terror older than memory.

The creature descended from the clouds. Blue streaks of glowing lines crawled across its massive dark torso, dancing between the obsidian scales like living veins of celestial fire. With each beat of its wings, thunder exploded across the firmament. The storm no longer merely surrounded the creature; the storm actively obeyed it. As the entity emerged fully from the black clouds, the moon vanished behind the localized tempest, and a bleak, grey darkness consumed the world.

From the opposite side of a jagged cliffside stood a lone figure, his dark hair billowing past deep amber eyes. He was young but having that mature look that explains the absolute calmness of his posture.

A black cloak whipped violently behind him, riding the storm winds as fragments of shattered stone drifted and hovered around his boots. His dark armor gleamed beneath the flashes of distant lightning, its surface scarred by the kinetic impacts of countless battles, yet remaining structurally unbroken. Golden veins ran across portions of the chest plate and gauntlets like streams of molten sunlight trapped beneath obsidian steel.

He locked his gaze onto the ancient entity looming before him.

‘This creature has a striking resemblance to a dragon, but the structural composition is entirely different. Any idea what we are looking at, Sage?’

((During my analysis, I confirmed the creature is an Azurath.))

“An Azurath? What’s the context behind that? Is it some manner of an ancient dragon?”

『AFFIRMATIVE』

Azurath is confirmed to be the first and Only true dragon.

Its origin, history, and records remain unknown.

『ANALYSIS』

The entity has existed for thousands of millennia, freely traversing this lost realm. Azurath’s existence predates all currently available records.

“I see. It seems I stumbled upon this realm by mere coincidence, only to encounter a terrifying anomaly. The question is, how do I conquer it? This entity doesn’t seem like the kind of opponent I can easily handle or even survive.”

((Calculating every possible combat outcome... Confirmed.))

((The probability of defeating it results in 0.5%.))

“What the?! I’m in serious trouble here, but that doesn’t mean–”

Before he could complete his words, the creature broke the boundary of space, appearing instantaneously right in front of him.

’What the... it’s freaking fast for its size!’

As the words processed from his mind, the sheer kinetic displacement caught him, sending him spinning and crashing through a sequence of jagged rock formations.

Before he could recover his balance, a concentrated blue beam descended directly onto his position, transforming the entire landscape into a blinding expanse of blank white and faint azure.

After the blinding energy effects finally faded, the armored figure could be seen standing perfectly still in a mid-air guard position, hovering in the sky with a long staff gripped firmly in his hand. The tips of the staff were encrypted in ornate gold, while the primary chassis remained a deep, midnight black. He swiped his hand past his face, and thick, dark golden energy flooded the space, instantly materializing into a dark helmet accented with intricate golden patterns along the eyes and chin.

“Tsk. Thank goodness my cognitive processing was fast enough to activate the Zero-field. Now, I think it’s time to try some moves on you.”

With a sudden spatial flicker, he appeared directly in front of the creature’s massive visage. He thrust his staff forward, the weapon instantaneously extending and enlarging through its kinetic parameters until it slammed violently into the creature’s torso. The sheer impact forced the monolithic beast backward.

The Azurath averted its gaze, its flowing blue eyes piercing the armored figure with pure, unadulterated rage. The armored figure appeared at its right flank in a blink, hurling his staff with absolute velocity, intending to pierce right through the creature’s skull. But instead of penetrating, the staff bounced off the crystallized scales, its momentum redirected directly back toward its master.

“Huh?”

A series of claw slashes, tearing through the atmosphere like localized shockwaves, rushed toward his position. He instantly dodged every strike with practiced, fluid ease, closing the distance toward the creature. As he approached, however, his spatial awareness flagged an anomaly: the slashes he had just evaded had looped back, targeting him from diagonal blind spots.

“Heh? A delayed vector track? Strange ability.”

He blocked the incoming trajectories by rapidly spinning his staff. Simultaneously, a dense golden energy flowed around the rotations, gathering the residual slashes together and redirecting the composite kinetic force straight back toward the creature. The Azurathan spread both of its massive wings to form a defensive shield.

The redirected slashes struck the wings with heavy, booming impacts, causing the environment to echo with concussive shockwaves. As the smoke cleared, the huge wings slowly parted, displaying the creature’s completely unscathed body.

Suddenly, the beast stretched out its massive clawed hand, swiping it violently in the armored figure’s direction. The armored figure narrowly dodged the trajectory purely due to it’s extreme operational speed.

The sheer concussive force of the swipe tore the environment apart, forcing the dark clouds and the shattered earth to separate completely revealing the planet’s molten volcanic core below and the infinite depth of the clear skies above.

Sweat prickled inwardly along the armored figure’s brow.

“What the...? That ability, that strength... It’s just like the other me. Who knows what could have become of me if that had struck me.”

((You would have been completely obliterated into fragmented pieces.))

“I didn’t tell you to report the outcome to me! But actually... I need to go all out for a bit.”

Within a single second, the armored figure manifested directly at the creature’s rear, a torrent of golden beam energy oscillating fiercely out of his palm.

Before another second could tick by, a cataclysmic explosion engulfed the entire surface of the earth. An hour later, the shockwaves finally departed, leaving dense towers of black smoke and pulverized dust choking the atmosphere.

Before a single observation could be made, the black smoke instantly cleared, revealing the Azurath standing completely unscathed.

“What the?! What just happened?”

((You have miscalculated. Physical attacks do not affect it in the same manner as that powerful demon king you fought previously.))

“Ohh. Now I get it. So I have to switch into that state, huh?”

Suddenly, the beast appeared at his right rear. With a full, sweeping trajectory of its massive wing, the armored figure was sent violently flying, crashing hard onto the earth’s surface. Using the raw momentum of the fall, he fiercely stabbed his staff into the earth, using his opposite palm to execute a flawless pivot stunt to regain his balance, landing directly on top of his upright staff.

With folded arms, he stared down the beast from atop his weapon as it began to approach him from a distance. As the beast charged with a massive burst of speed, one of its massive wings suddenly tore apart. The creature stumbled in agonizing pain, losing its balance entirely before hitting the ground with a resounding thud. With a deafening roar that caused the ground and weather patterns to violently tremble and echo, it forced itself back up, its pure, unadulterated rage locked onto the armored figure.

“Who said you were allowed to stand?”

He muttered coldly.

Instantly, a sequence of invisible harmonic slashes continuously tore through the beast’s massive body, completely severing its internal organs. The beast screamed in pure anguish, falling face down into the dirt as it snorted its final, painful breath.

The armored figure dropped down from his staff, slowly walking toward the fallen creature to confirm the kill. His helmet dissolved into fragments of fading energy, revealing his young face once more.

“Sage, any abnormalities?”

((I strongly suggest you do not approach it. There are still active signs of life within the entity.))

“Huh?”

The armored figure’s eyes widened in sheer shock as a sudden, violent surge of blood gushed from his mouth, his entire body registering an immense wave of pain.

“Heh?”

He looked down, disoriented, only to realize that his body had just crashed onto a rock formation--the jagged, pointed apex of the stone had pierced cleanly through his armor and deep into his torso.

“What... I got injured by a mere rock? This world is strange. Nothing physical was supposed to pierce through my energy armor. Just what kind of anomaly is this creature?” he muttered, casting his gaze back toward the location of the beast.

The beast was slowly rising to its feet. Its body was regenerating instantly.

Simultaneously, countless blue streaks and intricate patterns pulsed violently across its massive form as it reconstructed, transforming its formerly jet-black hide into an array of glowing azure lines.

“It can even regenerate after I subject it to harmonic slashes, huh?” the armored figure observed, slowly shifting his torso to pull himself off the pointed rock that had impaled his chest.

Golden energy immediately pulsated around the wound, healing the tissue within an instant. He stretched out his hand, and his staff flew directly back into his grip.

But as the he attempted to reposition himself, his left hand completely detached from its usual place, falling flat onto the ground below.

“What... just... happened? Could this creature...?” The armored figure’s eyes widened immediately as the realization struck him.

“Ohh... so it’s adaptive. It can even mimic and employ invisible slashes. Hah! This is going to give me quite a headache.”

He rapidly contorted his body, dodging a continuous onslaught of incoming, invisible slashes. Golden energy lines began to pulsate fiercely at his severed left arm.

‘Being able to replicate my own distinct ability makes this creature one of a kind. How can an ability like that be copied so easily? Sheesh! I can’t even regenerate my lost arm right now.’

((That is precisely what makes it an anomaly, Master. It is capable of far more. However, you are fortunate that it remains an inexperienced creature, which makes it statistically possible to find a narrow window to escape this realm.))

“What? So you’re suggesting I should retreat?”

((Of course, Master. I prioritize your vital safety above all else. There is no viable path to defeating it before we find a clue to navigating our way out of this realm.))

Suddenly, blue lightning arced down from the sky, striking like a flash toward his exact coordinates. In a blink, the armored figure evaded the localized bolt. But instead of striking harmlessly into the earth, the lightning multiplied exponentially, turning back to pursue the armored figure like a homing matrix.

((Warning. Avoid that energy signature at all costs.))

“What? How about I utilize my body barrier or the Standing Wave?”

((Do not attempt that strategy.))

“What? Not even the safe node zone can neutralize it?”

((That attack completely ignores conventional physics and defenses.))

“Tch. It’s functioning exactly like my Heaven’s Judgment Thunder ability.”

((Of course it is, but they possess a fundamental difference. Unlike your current Heaven’s Judgment Thunder, which strikes a target to terminate the physical body or strip away an ability, this lightning directly executes the soul.))

“What the... that’s really scary. Shit, I have to think of a way to bypass this tragedy. Maybe I should use cloning. No! Since it’s a soul-executing strike, it could indirectly target my primary source instead. Sage, any clues?”

((Nothing can be done to actively avoid its vector path--at least for now. However, I suggest you alter your positioning and move directly toward the Azurath.))

“Ohh... I see. Exploiting the dead zone. From the looks of it, this thing is so confident in its output that it thinks it can easily do away with me. Damn this beast. Keep the dreams in the wonderlands instead.”

Narrowly dodging the cascading lightning matrix, he accelerated, speeding directly toward the titanic creature. He reached the creature’s immediate flank. Due to its massive size, the beast couldn’t properly adjust its field of vision to track him at such close quarters. The armored figure performed a series of near-miss dodges as he locked himself into the creature’s physical silhouette. The tracking lightning struck the location, but it washed over the Azurath’s scales with absolutely no effect, showing no signs of damage or pain.

“Hah... this is going to cause me a massive mental drain.”

The creature let out a cataclysmic roar. The sound waves released a devastating combination of kinetic shockwaves and high-density lightning. The sheer frequency of the roar caused the overhead clouds to part entirely, splitting the surrounding mountains in half, while the armored figure’s internal mana pool began to fluctuate and become unstable.

Thick smoke began to ease out of the creature’s nostrils--a visual tell that allowed the armored figure to immediately realize what was coming next. The Azurath slowly opened its maw, revealing a terrifying, brilliant energy light emanating from its throat.

In an instant, the creature bypassed the physical distance, teleporting to manifest directly behind him. Before a single defensive counter-calculation could be executed, a fiery blue light blanketed the entire landscape, transforming the previously dark setting into a blinding azure shade.

The armored figure could be seen gritting his teeth fiercely, every muscle fiber straining as he struggled to withstand the overwhelming pressure of the energy beam.

“Haaaaaaaah!!”

The energy beam completely overtook him, swallowing his form along with the entire landscape.

Slowly, the dark smoke and pulverized dust began to part, revealing a jagged, ruined ground oozing with faint streaks of volcanic fire. Amidst the chaotic, shattered atmosphere stood a lone figure, panting heavily. His obsidian armor had been completely shattered from the raw energy impact, revealing only his well-built chest.

His midnight-black staff was pinned deeply into the torn earth. A slow streak of blood trickled down the corner of his mouth.

“I can’t believe it... its energy beam bypassed both the Zero-field barrier and my staff’s autonomous barrier. Just what the hell is this monster?”

He slowly raised his head high, wiping the blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, and a slow, dangerous smile spread across his face.

Suddenly, reality began to shatter like glass all around them. The physics of the broken world fractured, peeling away to reveal an entirely new, unmapped dimension.

“Welcome to my domain,” he whispered with a dark smile, his eyes flashing with amber brilliance. “The real battle begins.”
