After not hearing anything from Feray, Cael though the worse, mustering all his courage he stood up and brushed himself off.

He didn’t know what to think, or what to do, but one thing was clear to him, he needed to help the people who where stranded still in the siege…

Making his way around the tree he saw the lifeless Feray.Full novel: Tower of Letters — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Blood painted down the hill from his leg, his eyes closed with his hand held against his locket and a soul tear trail that was evident of his pain.

Cael couldn’t look at his captain like this, he looked away seeing the sight he was left in, the urge to vomit almost compelled him to do so.

Yet at the same time, there was almost a look of disgust in Cael’s eyes, his back shivered realizing what it was, he started to think;『 If this is how the vice captain is… Then I don’t want to be next, I don’t want your title, how much of a cowered can I be?

』

Taking a final look at the body that was now Feray, Cael gritted his teeth, it was unclear why he didn’t say his thought before or why these feeling only came to be after his death.

But something drew him in closer to the body, reaching out for the pendent he spoke;

“If I cannot bare your title, let me bare your memory’s…” His hands trailed the pendent around his neck unlocking it, pulling it tight into his hands, with a outward sigh he spoke again, this time more confident;

“I…” He raised his blade, pointing to the moon nested in the clouds of the night, “Am..” Following suite was the hand holding the pendant, “I am..” Almost losing his words he ‘–tsk’ out loud, shouting further then most, as a surge of pride overflowed his mind;

“I Am, Cael Taro, The vIce captAIN of the ImperIal KNightS OF LEMPIRA!!!”

******************************************************************************************

An hours had passed since his declaration, and nothing had really happen, he made his way down the hill ready for a battle, but no one was here.

Buildings where on fire, rubble and flames hid most of the death’s, even the city’s center-castle meant for the king was empty.

Cael had been walking around with a bit of courage, though he made plenty of stops along the way to commemorate the deaths of many civilians, paying respects to each an everyone he saw.

It was utterly inhumane what had happened tonight, and Cael had experienced it himself, but something didn’t sit right with him; 『 Why are so many dead?

And better yet where is everyone?

This many lives of civilians..

It’s unjust, and not our orders tonight… 』

It was true that Cael was a part of the chaos, but his orders where clear to break the walls and retreat, of course some barbaric few would disobeyed and entered..

But even then a few murders couldn’t of sprawl into this mess, body’s laid in every street, fires surged the lands and not a single soul was alive or here to tell the horrors to Cael.

Just the sound of flames, and he mirage of a helpless cry.

‘–tsk’ Cael clicked his tongue, 『 I need to get to higher ground, or at least find someone… Shit, why am I even here?

』 His legs began to shake as he realized that he had come her for no reason, his whole plan he had told

Feray was getting out of here.

Yet here he was, walking around a burning town full of ghosts, the urge to turn back grew with every shaky step he took, then a cry came out from a girl, a loud sad cry.

Looking up and around Cael tried to find where the sound was coming from, someone was clearly in need of help and considering this was the first person he had heard tonight outside of Feray he had to help

The cry grew louder as Cael got closer to the source of the sound, turning down the street he saw a small child sitting there in her defeat.

The girl’s hands where by her side.

She turned feeling the presence of an eye, “help…” she muttered, eye jade eye’s looking past even reality it’self, Cael moved forwards carefully speaking;

“Are you in need of help? Young girl?” He was now standing besides the girl who was on her knees, Cael squatted down to her level, looking at the girl.

She would only look back at him an then away, Cael reached his hand out to comfort the girl to which she jolted in fear, Cael looked at his hand as he was confused on the matter, saying; “You have to tell me what’s wrong, use your words.” He said with a smile cheering the little girls spirit, she stuttered her words looking at Cael differently now, the light in her blankness eyes returned, saying;

“mr.. why do you wear them same clothes as them? you.. don’t happen to be with him, no?” She said silently scared for his answer, Cael looked down at his uniform completely clueless he followed up with a question;

“Who is him? And I don’t know what group your talking about, do you have anymore details about what happened here? And what do you need help with? You looked desperate for help…” He said calmly, waiting for his answer.

She nodded, looking at him she said, “I was lost, and walking around here is like a nightmar――” Her eyes darted back into her face, holding her hands over her mouth she whispered looking behind him;

“It’s him…”

Cael’s eyes shot back as well, as he stood up and clenched his blade, turning around he saw another knight standing there.

This knight’s eyes where dark and cold, he looked at Cael his gaze piercing his mind, there uniforms where identical leading Cael to say;

“You must be from the imperial knights, of Lempira. It seems you have given this young girl quite the scare, state what your here for.” Cael was nervous at the man’s appearance, but he was more scared at him tilting.

He was facing Cael at an angle and had been since the beginning, this was a clear way of concealing a sword, Cael had seen it before, his grip tightened around his hilt ready to draw at a moment’s notice.

But the man didn’t speak, he only whispered to himself, his abnormal long black hair for a man and his ruff beard covered him in hair, Cael then spoke trying to push him;

“You look more like a drunk then a knight! You dare humiliate the art of the blade?” The man’s gaze looked more direct this time his head tilted up as he spoke taking a step forwards;

“The art of the blade? There is no Art, it is only those who win, and those who die… Unless you find the beauty of death to be art?” He said low like a river, walking towards Cael on an angle, Cael drew his blade and pointed it at him both hands on the hilt he shouted;

“What’s Wrong with you Scum? What happened here! And who even are you! don’t you dare tell me your a knight, or better yet you stole that uniform!”

Cael’s rage overwhelmed himself, his eyes going bloodshot, the man stopped dead in his tracks tilting forwards as he reached for his blade;

“I Am Julius the current Swords-master!” The man said slowly…

Cael looked at his sword, his guard felt a little and shock of his title and name almost made him lose his grip..

In a flash of light crossed over his wrists returning back to Julius’s side, looking down at his hands as they slowly fell off, cutting both wrists open cleanly like butter.

The little girl screamed as she saw

Cael’s wrists fall to the ground, Julius continued;

“Your nothing now, dead in moments like the rest, if anything I am surprised there where still more of you out here..” Cael didn’t even hear him, his hands started pouring blood out, his head spun, as he fell backwards, his eyes shaking as he desperately clung to thought;

『 I am..

I am..

I am..

I am..

I am..

I am..

I am..

The vice captain…?

Right?

I am Cael right..?

Right?

Fuck, fuck fuck fuck fuck, it huts it hurts it hurts it hurts shit shit shit shit, 』

Looking around, his eyes trying to take as much light as possible, the burly image from his eyes that where coated in the blood of his wrists… He looked as the blurry Julius walking away with the girl held by the hem of her shirt, Seeing an angel.

One with golden wings of life, the angel got close right up into his vision holding Cael’s ear he whispered,

“Let me help you suffer~”

In the next instance the angel stood up and with one stomp crushed his skull into parts scatting around.

He had been sentenced to death by a man, and killed by an angel, in that moment he spoke subconsciously even though he had been dead, he defied the laws of nature and spoke from his soul again;

“I Am Cael Taro, the Vice captain of the imperial knights of Lempira… And I declare war on that bastard Julius and that devilish angel”
