Looking at the thick bandages wrapped around Qi Yanjue’s upper body, Song Yueying’s mouth twitched. Moving faster than she could think, she pulled up the blanket and tucked it up to his chin.

The speed was so fast that even Qi Yanjue was momentarily stunned.

“What are you doing?!” The nurse was so startled by Song Yueying’s rough action that she let out a sharp cry. “He’s a critically injured patient! If you shove him like that and his wounds split open, what then?”Full novel: Transmigrated into a 1970s Young Widow, My “Dead” Husband Came Back — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Are you trying to kill him?”

The nurse glared at Song Yueying as if she were a heinous murderer.

“The doctor is standing right here, since when is it your place to yap?” Song Yueying shot the nurse a casual glance.

“You—” The nurse was left speechless by the retort.

Although Doctor Zhao was also taken aback by Song Yueying’s swift and unapologetically blunt actions, he was more concerned about Qi Yanjue’s condition and immediately stepped forward to examine him.

Only after confirming that the wounds hadn’t split open did he let out a breath of relief.

“Logically, in his condition, he should still be unconscious,” Doctor Zhao said, unable to make sense of it. “Yet the fact is, he’s awake now, it’s truly a miracle!”

A miracle, whenever something can’t be explained, people like to chalk it up to that. Song Yueying curled her lips slightly, not responding to Doctor Zhao, her gaze shifting to the man lying on the hospital bed.

That said, he had woken up a bit earlier than expected.

A puzzled look appeared on Song Yueying’s face. She knew the effects of the gas weapon she had developed better than anyone.

Doctor Zhao looked at Song Yueying, naturally noticing the puzzled expression on her face. He felt quite perplexed, there was something about the way she looked at Qi Yanjue…

It felt very unfamiliar.

“When you brought him to the hospital, didn’t you keep insisting you weren’t his family?” the nurse questioned Song Yueying unhappily. “So what’s with pretending to be a good person now?”

“And now you’ve come running back to fawn over him, your skin is really thick!”

Her train of thought was forcibly interrupted. Song Yueying slowly turned her head to look at the nurse, her retort coming out immediately. “I may not be his family, but I’m the one who brought him to the hospital.”

“I’m kind-hearted. I see a good deed through to the end, what’s wrong with coming back to check on him?”

“You—” The nurse could only glare, her gaze resentful as it lingered on the dress Song Yueying was wearing. After a long pause, she finally spat out, “You’re lying. You’re shameless.”

Doctor Zhao frowned at the nurse. As a medical worker, was it really appropriate to treat a patient’s companion like this?

Lying on the hospital bed, Qi Yanjue’s expression also darkened at the nurse’s words.

“Where exactly did I lie? And how am I shameless?” Without waiting for an answer, Song Yueying continued at an unhurried pace, “You’re just slapping false accusations on me.”

“You’re deliberately slandering my reputation. I’m going to file a complaint—” Suddenly realizing that in this era people didn’t quite say “file a complaint,” Song Yueying decisively changed her wording.

“I’m going to report you.”

“I acted out of a sense of justice, brought an injured person to the hospital, and even kindly bought fruit to visit him.”

“And you, as a nurse, first kept questioning me about everything, and now you’re accusing me of lying and calling me shameless.”

“Your hospital must give me an explanation, and you must make it clear to me, where exactly did I lie, and how am I shameless?”

It might have been making a fuss over a minor point, but so what if she was?

“You… you… you…” The nurse raised a trembling hand to point at Song Yueying, shaking with anger.

At the same time, she faltered, afraid Song Yueying might really report her.

Earlier, Doctor Zhao had been focused on saving Qi Yanjue and hadn’t paid much attention to the nurse’s attitude toward Song Yueying. Now that he had heard everything clearly, it was obvious the nurse was venting her anger and acting out of jealousy.

He no longer hesitated. Casting the nurse a cold glance, he said seriously to Song Yueying, “Comrade, I will truthfully report what you said to the hospital leadership.”

“Doctor Zhao, how can you speak up for her? We’re the ones who are comrades,” the nurse said, unable to believe he would side with an outsider instead of a colleague.

The nurse shot Song Yueying a venomous glare, as if she wanted to tear her apart, but she didn’t dare say anything more. Her lips trembled as she turned and stumbled out of the ward.

Only three people remained in the room.

Doctor Zhao gave Qi Yanjue a complicated, unreadable look, let out a silent sigh, and quickly left as well.

After Doctor Zhao and the nurse were gone, Qi Yanjue, lying on the hospital bed, studied Song Yueying for a long while before asking in a calm voice, “You told her I’m not your family?”

“Mm.” Song Yueying nodded. “You weren’t my family to begin with, I couldn’t very well lie and say you were.”

“Song Yueying, I’m Qi Yanjue.” Qi Yanjue narrowed his eyes as he examined her.

What trick was she playing now? A trace of disgust flickered in his deep gaze. He stared intently at her face, trying to catch some sign of petulance or the guilt of lying.

But unfortunately, he was disappointed. There was only calmness and composure on her face.

Qi Yanjue suddenly felt the urge to ask how she managed to be so calm and unbothered, looking at him as if he were a complete stranger.

He had come this time to divorce her, but her act of pretending not to know him was genuinely irritating. Then, thinking of how she had already remarried, he really was no longer her family.

“Qi Yanjue? Don’t know him.” Song Yueying honestly shook her head. Then she suddenly thought of something, blinked, and looked at Qi Yanjue with eyes full of confusion and shock.

He… knew her name. No, he knew the original owner’s name, he knew the original host.

She was done for. Running into someone who knew the original host was a disaster. She wasn’t the original owner, so it would be easy to slip up. There was no way she could avoid paying his medical bills now, even if she wanted to dodge responsibility…

Sigh, money, money! Money wasn’t the problem, the real problem was that she currently had no money.

“You don’t know me?” Qi Yanjue curled his lips in mockery, looking at Song Yueying with an odd expression.

A year ago, this woman had practically been willing to die just to marry him, and now, a year later, she claimed not to know him. Yet her expression didn’t look fake, nor did it seem like she was sulking.

Seeing that he wasn’t speaking, and worried he might notice the difference between her and the original host, Song Yueying raised a hand to her forehead and put on a frail appearance, looking at Qi Yanjue pitifully.

In a weak voice, she said, “Well… I hit my head against the wall earlier, so I probably got a concussion. I’m still a little dizzy, and my memories are kind of muddled.”

If her memories were scrambled, then not remembering him was perfectly normal.

Qi Yanjue was far too sharp not to see that her weakness was an act. He decided to probe her without showing his hand.

“What happened to the injury on your forehead?” He planned to first get to the bottom of this strange matter.

A miscalculation, she had accidentally dug a hole for herself. Song Yueying wailed inwardly, but outwardly remained calm, stubbornly insisting, “Didn’t I already say it just now? There’s no injury on my forehead. You saw wrong.”

“There’s no way I saw wrong.” Qi Yanjue narrowed his eyes dangerously and said in a low voice, “I saw with my own eyes as you slammed headfirst into the wall, split your forehead open, bled all over, and collapsed on the ground.”

“When you woke up, your forehead was still bleeding nonstop.”

This guy was not easy to fool, Song Yueying grumbled inwardly, but still insisted, “You definitely saw wrong.”
