“Why? Isn’t it better if there are people? At least better than zombies, right?” Ye Shuyao didn’t understand.
“Zombies are scary, but sometimes human hearts are the most dangerous thing in this world,” Zhou Nuocheng said in a low voice. The members of the Yingyun team all looked rather grim.
“If it were me, I’d just take them down as soon as we go in. Much simpler,” Tang Yao said seriously.
Shi Ran gave him a look that clearly said “I don’t know this person.” That kind of chuunibyou idea… she really couldn’t do it.
“Tang Yao, when the weather’s nice, remember to bring your brain out to sunbathe,” Zhou Nuocheng said with his eyes closed, resting.
Xu Zimo held back a laugh and explained, “What the captain means is, we don’t know the situation inside. Who knows what’s in the supermarket? If we provoke them and something goes wrong, we could be in serious trouble.”
By the time they reached Feng County, it was already 4 p.m. Fortunately, the supermarket wasn’t located in the city center, and the nearby zombies were scattered.
Everyone got out of the car. Zhou Nuocheng walked up to the two girls.
“Do you know how to use a gun?”
Shi Ran and Ye Shuyao looked at each other and shook their heads in unison.
Even so, Zhou Nuocheng still handed each of them a pistol.
“Take it. Just in case. If things get dangerous, we might not have time to protect you.”
It had to be said—when Zhou Nuocheng acted as captain, he was very responsible and steady. All his usual laziness disappeared when lives were involved.
Shi Ran stored the car away. Everyone put their guns into their backpacks and moved toward the supermarket.
Sensing living humans, nearby zombies began gathering toward them.
The Yingyun team subconsciously moved to protect the two girls, keeping them in safer positions—but clearly, it wasn’t necessary.
A zombie suddenly burst out from the bushes beside the road, its face stained with dried blood. Its twisted mouth seemed almost excited as it charged toward Xu Zimo at high speed.
Xu Zimo reacted instantly and barely dodged.
Behind him, Ye Shuyao swung her baseball bat straight at the zombie’s face. The impact of metal against bone made everyone feel a jolt in their bones.
Xu Zimo, who had barely escaped, got splattered with brain matter and almost fainted on the spot.
The zombie’s head was flattened and hanging half-off.
Everyone: “……”
That was… a bit too brutal.
Ye Shuyao awkwardly handed him a tissue and quietly hid her baseball bat behind her back, switching to a dagger instead.
It was convenient to use, but a little hard on teammates.
After that, the team no longer worried about the girls’ abilities and focused on fighting zombies. Since there weren’t many, they quickly reached the supermarket area.
They retracted their abilities and saw the supermarket ahead—its glass doors had a metal shutter pulled up. Inside stood two men chatting, likely guards. The place had clearly already been occupied.
“Two big brothers, we’re refugees from another city. Could you let us in?” Shi Ran said urgently, her eyes bright and watery, her cheeks slightly flushed—looking both cute and pitiful.
The two brothers, Chen Teng and Chen Da, had already turned away several groups of refugees. After all, no one wanted to share supplies.
But when they saw Shi Ran’s face, they froze for a moment, completely unable to look away.
Not many women had escaped after the outbreak, and beautiful ones like her were even rarer.
Just as they hesitated, Zhou Nuocheng impatiently clicked his tongue and stepped forward, knocking on the glass door.
“Hey, there are so many people here. Can you stop making those disgusting expressions?”
Their view was cut off. Chen Teng immediately spat, “Who the hell do you think you are talking to me like that? Do you know who my big brother is?”
Ye Shuyao quickly stepped forward. “Please don’t be angry. Can you let us in first? If we attract zombies outside, this glass door might get smashed.”
Seeing another beauty, the two men immediately opened the door without hesitation.
They had already decided: kill the men later, and keep these two beauties for themselves.
Inside the supermarket, there were fewer than ten people. Everyone was surprised at the newcomers—until they saw the two girls.
Chen Teng and Chen Da were former security guards at a research institute. They had followed researcher Zhang Qichuan here after the outbreak.
Zhang Qichuan was their current leader and the only known ability user. He was polite and capable, so the others followed him willingly.
But the two brothers, relying on being “trusted subordinates,” acted arrogantly in the supermarket while behaving like obedient dogs in front of Zhang Qichuan. No one could do anything about them.
Inside the supermarket, there were two women.
One was a pregnant woman, Zhao Yuhui, about seven or eight months along, and beside her was her husband Li Quan, who was now staring greedily at Shi Ran and Ye Shuyao.
The other woman was Yang Ling, about the same age as Shi Ran, looking at them unfriendly.
“Why did you let them in? Is there too much food here?” Yang Ling snapped.
Li Quan immediately replied, “Hey, we’re all human. Helping each other is normal. The government won’t ignore us. These monsters outside will be gone in a month. I’ve seen plenty of storms in my life.”
He looked like a greasy middle-aged man who thought he knew everything, which was infuriating.
His pregnant wife didn’t even look at the newcomers, focusing instead on laying out a mat for him.
Yang Ling’s boyfriend, Huang Likai, was also there. He mostly tried to curry favor with Zhang Qichuan and didn’t care much about his girlfriend, which made Chen Teng bolder in harassing her.
But now—he had new targets. He didn’t care about anyone else anymore.
“Who the hell are you to question me?” Chen Teng snapped. “I let whoever I want in. Believe it or not, I’ll throw you out right now.”
