At 8:00 PM, Shen Zhiyi finished her shift.
The first thing she did upon returning to her dorm was light incense for Ruyi.
She had found a dusty, unassuming sack to store all the cash from the box, lining it with cardboard to hide the contents inside.
After offering incense, she went to take a shower, washing away the smell of oil and smoke.
While bathing, she was racking her brain trying to figure out how to write her complaint letter. She needed something that would grab the attention of Lu Yusheng’s superiors and make him the center of gossip in the entire hospital.
The title had to be eye-catching and shocking.
By the time she got out of the shower, she still hadn’t figured out how to start. She had already crumpled up and thrown away several pieces of paper.
She couldn’t believe it even after transmigrating into a book, she still couldn’t escape writing copy!
Although this wasn’t for marketing, it was still a formal letter that needed to be persuasive and attention-grabbing.
What a headache.
Thud!
Ruyi vibrated, sending out more supplies cola, seasonings, and other items she needed.
Over the past week, her room had practically turned into a small warehouse. Thankfully, the seasoning packaging was small and easy to hide, or she would have been discovered long ago.
Shen Zhiyi put down her pen and went to collect the gifts.
Six large bottles of cola, four small cans of premium pepper salt, bottles of oyster sauce perfect for cooking vegetables, and matsutake powder even better than chicken bouillon for enhancing flavor.
Shen Zhiyi couldn’t help but worry. Once Ruyi’s ingredients spoiled the customers’ taste buds, what would happen if she left Fumanlou someday? Would they ever be able to eat ordinary food again?
After taking out the seasonings, she found one last item a sheet of A4 paper.
It looked like an official report.
She quickly flipped it over. It was a Paternity Test Report.
Sample 1: Lu Yusheng, Male, 25 years old…
Sample 2: Yang Anqiang, Male, 1 year old…
…
Conclusion: Confirmed to be biological father and son. Match probability: 99.9%
Shen Zhiyi: “…”
“Seeking him high and low, only to find him right here.”
Holding the report, Shen Zhiyi immediately headed out.
Chef Zhao and Chef Qiu were playing cards with the barbers from next door. Seeing her leave, they called out, “Hey girl, where are you going so late? It’s not safe outside. Be good and stay put!”
In just a few days, the two chefs had come to treat her like their own daughter and were genuinely worried about her safety.
“I’m going to buy some fruit. I’m craving something sweet. Be right back!” Shen Zhiyi hurried off.
“Ask Sister Li to go with you!” Chef Qiu shouted, but she was already too far away to hear.
The barber next door laughed. “Wow, you two treat her like she’s really your daughter.”
“She might as well be. She’s such a good kid, you wouldn’t understand,” Chef Zhao said proudly.
“Yeah, yeah. Even Sister Li praises her nonstop, so she must be great. But… how did she end up in that place anyway?” the barber asked quietly.
“Our Boss Wei said… your boss is too timid. Boss Wei is really brave. Hiring someone with a record like hers… isn’t he worried about trouble later?”
“Will you shut up? Boss Wei is a man of vision and broad mind. How can your Boss Xiong compare to him?”
“Alright, alright, he’s better. I’m taking this pot!” The barber laughed as he won the round and took the money.
While Shen Zhiyi was gone, the two chefs were so distracted checking the time that they lost several rounds in a row.
“Forget it, let’s stop playing. Let’s go smoke at the door,” Chef Zhao said, grabbing his cigarettes and walking out. Chef Qiu followed.
The barber went back inside when a customer arrived.
Unaware of how worried they were, Shen Zhiyi marched straight toward the West Street Clinic.
Luck was on her side. When she reached the front desk on the first floor, the security guard was doing his rounds in the ward, and the doctor on duty had gone to the restroom.
A patient kindly told her to wait, but she just smiled, slipped an envelope into the suggestion box, and left.
She didn’t know when the staff would empty the box or when the leaders would see it.
But she was prepared to wait.
If one day didn’t work, wait two. If two days didn’t work, wait three. And if there was still no news after that, she would just ask Ruyi for another copy and do it all over again.
Mission accomplished, she bought some bananas, apples, and a watermelon and headed back to Fumanlou.
Seeing her return safely, the two chefs finally breathed a sigh of relief.
“Where did you go, girl?”
“To buy fruit for everyone!” Shen Zhiyi peeled a banana and handed the rest out to share.
“Did you buy this from that stall on West Street?”
“You can tell? Chef Qiu, you’re amazing!” Shen Zhiyi gave a thumbs up.
“That stall owner is dishonest. Look at this watermelon it’s unripe.” Chef Qiu tapped the shell. The sound was hollow and sharp, not deep and dull. He frowned immediately.
Shen Zhiyi was speechless: “…”
She had never been good at choosing watermelons. Even in her past life, people always told her she picked bad ones.
She couldn’t believe that even after transmigrating, this bad luck still followed her!
“Guess we just have to accept the loss,” she said, making a face. She didn’t want to go argue.
Besides, West Street had no streetlights. The power was rationed at night, and tonight it was their turn to be cut off. The entire street was pitch black except for the bright flashlights at the fruit stalls.
She had dared to go once because it was urgent, but she definitely wouldn’t go a second time.
It was dangerous. Just a few days ago, a woman walking home late after mahjong had been robbed. The police had filed a report but hadn’t caught the culprit yet. They had increased patrols, but with limited manpower, there was no result so far.
Shen Zhiyi didn’t want to risk running into such violent criminals.
“Yeah, it’s no use going now. They’d have packed up and left already,” Chef Qiu said. He had been scammed there before too by the time he went back the next day, they denied everything.
So annoying!
But Shen Zhiyi didn’t really care. Losing a little money was fine. She would just never shop there again.
Eventually, when everyone stopped going, that dishonest shop would go bankrupt.
Evil always gets what it deserves in the end.
And right now, the person she was determined to “take care of” was that scumbag, Lu Yusheng.
