Li Yumei watched curiously as Mu Youyou handed the items to the postman but didn’t ask any questions.
Mu Youyou knew the letter was from the Gu family and decided to wait until Gu Beiting returned to show it to him. She locked the yard gate and went to Li Yumei’s house to continue making clothes.
It wasn’t until 4:30 p.m., when Li Yumei had to pick up her child, that Mu Youyou returned home.
Over the past two days, Mu Youyou had been making clothes with Li Yumei and Liu Shuzhen, and their relationship as military wives had grown closer.
The pants she made for Gu Beiting were finished, but Mu Youyou didn’t know how to give them to him.
That night, she sat on the bed, holding the clothes, feeling conflicted.
“Sis, just give it to him directly,” Caicai said. Humans were so complicated—clothes were ready, yet she hesitated on how to deliver them.
“Aiya, what would a kid like you understand,” Mu Youyou said.
In the end, Mu Youyou decided to leave the clothes in Gu Beiting’s room and not mention it unless he asked.
Just as she left his room, she heard movement at the yard gate. She grabbed a broom from the main room and hid behind the door.
At that moment, the main room door opened. Mu Youyou closed her eyes and swung the broom.
“It’s me, Youyou,” Gu Beiting’s voice rang out.
Mu Youyou froze, dropping the broom.
She turned to look at him. His clothes were covered in blood, and his face was dirty.
“You… you’re injured?” Mu Youyou panicked and hurried over to support him.
Seeing her worried expression, Gu Beiting felt warmth in his heart. “It’s okay. This is enemy blood.”
“Really?” Mu Youyou helped him to his room and filled a basin with hot water from the thermos.
Inside, Gu Beiting noticed the new clothes on the bed and smiled slightly.
“Take off your clothes, let me see,” Mu Youyou said, carrying the basin in.
Gu Beiting looked at her, realizing she was serious. He raised his hands and removed his shirt, revealing a strong chest and abs.
Mu Youyou swallowed. Though she had seen him before, seeing him this close was still exciting.
Gu Beiting noticed her blushing face and smiled even more—this girl was really shy.
There were a few scratches on his chest, fortunately not deep, mostly scrapes.
Mu Youyou wrung out a towel and handed it to him, letting him wipe his face first. Then she refilled the basin and gently cleaned his chest and abs.
Her fingertips brushed his skin, causing Gu Beiting to inhale sharply.
“What’s wrong? Does it hurt?” Mu Youyou asked, seeing his furrowed brow, thinking he was in pain.
Gu Beiting shook his head. “It doesn’t hurt.”
Mu Youyou applied ointment gently to his wounds.
The cooling ointment soothed the sting immediately.
“This is anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving; it works really well,” she explained.
Gu Beiting nodded.
“It’s so hot, I won’t bandage it to prevent inflammation.”
After tending to his wounds, Mu Youyou realized something—he came back late, injured, and probably hadn’t eaten dinner.
“You must be hungry. I’ll make you something to eat,” she said, heading to the kitchen.
“Youyou,” Gu Beiting called.
“Mm?” she turned.
“Did you make these clothes for me?” Gu Beiting asked suddenly.
Mu Youyou froze, surprised he noticed so quickly.
She smiled awkwardly and nodded in acknowledgment.
She hadn’t thought much when making them—they were a contract marriage, and she had just acted on impulse. “If you don’t like them, I…”
Before she could finish, Gu Beiting interrupted, “I really like them. Thank you!”
“Oh,” Mu Youyou said, unsure what else to say, and went to the kitchen.
It was late, so she decided to make noodles.
Gu Beiting, holding the clothes she made, smiled at the faint fragrance that lingered—they were already washed.
On the bed was also a pair of his military pants, which he hadn’t had time to repair. Opening them, he saw Mu Youyou had already sewn them.
He could have returned tomorrow, but the moment the mission was completed, he wanted to see her immediately.
So, he returned home late at night without delay.
“I just made some noodles; you can eat this for now,” Mu Youyou said, bringing the bowl in.
“This is perfect,” Gu Beiting said, truly hungry, devouring it. Two eggs were tucked under the noodles.
Seeing how fast he ate, Mu Youyou poured him a glass of water.
“Eat slowly,” she said softly.
After finishing, Gu Beiting tried to get up, but she stopped him from tidying.
By the time she returned after cleaning, Gu Beiting was already asleep. He was exhausted from the day.
Mu Youyou looked at him sleeping and felt a mix of emotions. She closed the door and returned to her room.
“Sis, you’re worried about him,” Caicai’s voice said, sensing Mu Youyou’s emotional state.
“Mm. I used to admire soldiers because they looked so handsome in uniform. Today I realized it’s because they protect us with their own flesh and blood.”
Caicai remained silent; a system couldn’t truly understand such matters.
The next morning, when Gu Beiting woke up, Mu Youyou was already making breakfast.
“You’re awake?” she said, noticing he wore the clothes she made.
“Mm,” Gu Beiting nodded. “They fit perfectly.”
“That’s good,” Mu Youyou said, smiling, her cheeks secretly red.
Seeing her flushed, Gu Beiting smirked slightly.
“I’ll go wash up first,” he said, heading to the yard.
After breakfast, he had to report to the Eastern Military District.
Eastern Military District Commander’s Office
“Commander,” Gu Beiting saluted.
“You’re back? This mission went well. I received calls from above this morning,” Commander Zhao patted his shoulder.
“I’m just doing my duty,” Gu Beiting said calmly.
“Your wife is the daughter of Mu Weiguo?” Commander Zhao asked, having just heard the news.
“Yes,” Gu Beiting nodded.
“Treat her well. Both of them are heroes,” Commander Zhao sighed, looking at him seriously.
“I will,” Gu Beiting said.
“I heard you were injured. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. My wife already applied the medicine for me.”
“Good. Don’t rush back to training; rest at home for a few days.”
“Yes,” Gu Beiting nodded. Though he could have brushed off the small injury, thinking of Mu Youyou applying medicine for him yesterday made him nod in agreement.
