Qin Yu’e’s heart trembled violently, her mind nearly unable to think anymore.
Damn this scumbag—why did he have to be so handsome? What a waste of such a good face when everything inside was already rotten.
She shoved Huo Guangji hard, gritting her teeth.
“Let go of me!”
But his lips tightened stubbornly, his whole expression filled with determination.
“No.”
As the sharply defined face in front of her moved closer and closer, Qin Yu’e’s heart pounded wildly, as if the little deer inside her chest was about to smash her to death.
“Huo Guangji!!!!”
Luckily, at the very last moment, she regained her senses and stopped him.
She forcefully pushed away the hand that was restraining her and ran out of the corner. Only after reaching the doorway and making sure he could no longer control her did Qin Yu’e stop, panting heavily.
“You… you bastard!!!”
For the first time, tears welled up in Qin Yu’e’s eyes.
When she first transmigrated into this world and opened her eyes to see two babies sitting in front of her, she hadn’t cried. When she was starving to the point of nearly fainting yet still had to crawl and kneel forward for the children’s sake, she hadn’t cried. Even the first time in her life she had eaten leaves and tree bark until her stomach hurt so badly she rolled on the ground, she still hadn’t cried.
But now, Huo Guangji was treating her like some trophy under his control, looking down on her from above.
He could so easily destroy the hard-earned peaceful life she had finally managed to obtain.
She couldn’t hold it in anymore.
Why?
Why did this man get to stand above her, looking down on her so arrogantly? Why could he overturn her life so effortlessly?
And why did he think he could come provoke her on a whim?
Qin Yu’e bit her lip tightly. The tears in her eyes were becoming impossible to suppress, so she hurriedly looked up at the smoke-blackened beam on the cafeteria ceiling.
After holding back for a long while, she finally spoke in a trembling voice.
“Huo Guangji, I don’t care what you want! But let me tell you this: from now on, don’t come bothering me and the children for no reason! I will never give these two children to you. They are living human beings, not tools for you to curry favor with some other woman!”
Watching the woman in front of him—an entire head shorter than he was—trembling as she shouted those words, Huo Guangji couldn’t help frowning.
What “other woman”?
He spent all day in the military unit; he hadn’t even seen a female mouse!
Suppressing the anger rising in his chest, Huo Guangji looked at Qin Yu’e’s tearful expression, and his tone unconsciously softened several degrees.
“What nonsense are you imagining now? Where would I even get another woman? I already gave you all the money I had. I’ll figure out the rest somehow, alright?”
For some reason, whenever he faced this woman, Captain Huo—usually decisive and commanding—felt nothing but deep helplessness.
The two remained in a stalemate for a while. Finally, Huo Guangji sighed.
“If you don’t want me staying there, then I’ll move back to the dormitory for the next few days. You’ve been busy all morning—I’ll walk you and the kids back.”
Both of them were too emotional right now. Talking more would accomplish nothing.
Maybe it would be better to wait until they’d both calmed down before discussing things again.
Qin Yu’e said nothing.
She simply let Huo Guangji pick up the two children and carry her belongings as he followed closely behind her step by step.
Little Zhuyue, unlike Qingfeng, wasn’t just focused on sucking the candy in her mouth.
Her bright little eyes darted around mischievously before she suddenly leaned close to Huo Guangji’s ear and whispered,
“Dad, do you wanna kiss Mom?”
“?”
Huo Guangji froze. Seeing the naughty grin on the little girl’s face, his heart softened, and he couldn’t help asking,
“Who taught you that?”
“I saw Goudan’s mom and dad kissing! Goudan said when moms and dads kiss, it means they’re gonna have a little sister for him. Dad, do you wanna have another baby with Mom?”
Huo Guangji raised an eyebrow. What a clever little imp.
“Mhm. Got any good ideas?”
The moment Little Zhuyue heard that, she perked right up.
Cupping her tiny hands around her mouth like a little trumpet, she whispered mysteriously into his ear,
“I heard Goudan’s mom say that men need to stay home more. Think about it—why doesn’t Mom wanna have babies with you? Isn’t it because you were never home before?”
“You little brat.” Huo Guangji lightly tapped her soft forehead. “Dad had missions the past few years. But now I’m staying home more, aren’t I?”
“But Mom still has a knot in her heart!” the little girl declared like a tiny grown-up, crossing her arms and shaking her head wisely. “If you ask me, you gotta give Mom presents—pretty things, tasty things! Make her happy, and then naturally she’ll have babies with you!”
“You just want tasty food for yourself, don’t you?” Huo Guangji exposed her little scheme mercilessly.
Still, his daughter did have a point.
He’d been away from home for years, and it was obvious Qin Yu’e had suffered a lot.
Huo Guangji thought about it. He really should make it up to her. But what should he give her? That wasn’t exactly his strong suit.
Even after racking his brains, he still couldn’t figure out what gift would make Qin Yu’e happy.
But back when they made battle plans in the unit, they always gathered all the squad leaders together to discuss things. Huo Guangji figured gift-giving could probably benefit from group discussion too.
After all, many heads were better than one.
By the time they finished talking, they had already arrived at the guesthouse.
Qin Yu’e opened the door, then immediately turned around and blocked Huo Guangji at the entrance.
She reached out and took the children from him. The meaning couldn’t have been more obvious—she was openly chasing him away.
Helpless, Huo Guangji sighed and pulled the door shut behind him.
Only after he had gone far away did Qin Yu’e glare at the little girl.
“What were you whispering to your father about?”
Little Zhuyue’s mind worked quickly. She immediately flashed a flattering grin.
“I told Dad to gather grass for my little rabbit! The bunny’s hungry and needs grass.”
Qin Yu’e no longer had the energy to argue with a child.
“You only needed grass. Why would you need him for that? I’ll go myself!”
She told the two children to nap at home while she carried a basket and went out.
The area around the military unit was full of woods and grasslands with all kinds of plants—perfect for feeding rabbits.
The children especially loved the two little rabbits, so after work every day Qin Yu’e would come out to cut fresh grass for them.
After casually cutting several sicklefuls, she had already filled half the basket.
As Qin Yu’e carried the basket back, she happened to run into Aunt Liu, who was bringing them some food.
“Little Qin! There you are!” Aunt Liu called from afar.
Holding a small plate of bean dumplings, she stuffed them into Qin Yu’e’s hands for the children to eat, but couldn’t resist asking curiously,
“So? Little Qin… you and Little Huo…”
Aunt Liu could tell the relationship between the two wasn’t exactly harmonious, and Qin Yu’e naturally understood what she was asking.
Since they worked together anyway, there wasn’t much point hiding it, so Qin Yu’e simply shook her head honestly.
“Forget it. Right now, all I want is to raise my two children well.”
Aunt Liu frowned slightly. From the looks of it, the two clearly hadn’t reached any sort of understanding.
She couldn’t help sighing inwardly. How could Captain Huo be such a blockhead? Who knew what was going on in that wooden head of his.
Trying to comfort Qin Yu’e, she said cheerfully,
“Little Qin, don’t think about it anymore. I’ll take you up the mountain and down to the market! Bring the children along and have some fun. Once you get out and relax a bit, you’ll feel much better!”
