“What’s going on?”
After a series of examinations, when Lu Jinan finally put down the stethoscope, Su Wanqing immediately asked.
“Food poisoning,” Lu Jinan said.
Su Wanqing frowned slightly. “How could that be?”
“The food in the villa shouldn’t have any issues. Think carefully—did Shimu eat anything else?” Lu Jinan asked.
Su Wanqing thought for a moment, then suddenly remembered. “Cake? I bought him a cake this afternoon.”
Lu Jinan raised an eyebrow. “Then it was likely gastrointestinal food poisoning caused by stale cream. Fortunately, the amount wasn’t large. And since he probably ate dinner as well, the symptoms got worse. I’ll prescribe the medicine. Madam Su… I mean, Madam Gu, please make sure Shimu takes it on time. For the next few days, he should eat mainly liquid food, keep things light, and control portions.”
Su Wanqing nodded. “I understand. Thank you for your trouble.”
Lu Jinan waved his hand. “No need to see me out. I still have something to discuss with Old Gu in the study.”
Su Wanqing nodded and sat by the bed, gently pulling the blanket up over Shimu.
..
In the study
“Hey, Old Gu, what’s going on with Miss Su? It’s like she’s been possessed or something.”
Lu Jinan slouched lazily in the armchair. Normally, the Su family’s young lady was always on the front pages of elite socialite gatherings—so dazzling she outshone everyone else, like a perfectly crafted doll with thoughts.
“And also,” he added, “that’s your son. Can you maybe show a little more concern?”
Gu Hengzhi tapped his fingers on the keyboard.
“He has everything he needs. What more concern is required?”
Lu Jinan was speechless. “Materially speaking, yes—you’ve given him more than enough. But can you maybe put in a little emotional effort too?”
Gu Hengzhi paused his fingers and looked at him.
“Lu Jinan, I grew up the same way. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”
Lu Jinan: “……”
Yes, he did grow up fine—just into a heartless, emotionless, ruthless machine.
Lu Jinan stood up, shaking his head.
“Forget it. I’m leaving.”
..
Back in the room
“Shimu, you’re awake? Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere? Still want to vomit?”
Seeing the little boy open his eyes, Su Wanqing quickly helped him sit up, placing two pillows behind his back.
Shimu’s little face was pale. He shook his head.
Su Wanqing handed him warm water and medicine.
“Drink some water and take the medicine.”
Shimu glanced at her, pressed his lips together, then silently took it all and swallowed the medicine without even frowning.
Su Wanqing gently touched his small face, her eyes full of heartache.
“It’s all my fault. I’m sorry, Shimu.”
Her face was full of guilt and distress.
Shimu lowered his eyes. “I don’t blame you. I just haven’t had cake in a long time.”
He never dared to speak about what he liked.
Just like how he liked cake… and cookies… and how his kindergarten classmate’s backpack always smelled like sweet snacks.
Su Wanqing smiled softly.
“When you’re better, I’ll bake you a cake, okay? I can also make lots of cookies. Whatever you like, I’ll make it for you.”
Before she transmigrated, because of illness, the Su family had rarely allowed her to go out. Out of boredom, she had learned baking. At first it was just to pass time, but she gradually got good at it. Later, when her family praised her desserts endlessly, she even took on the responsibility of making after-meal sweets.
Shimu looked surprised. “Really?”
“As long as you like it, I’ll make it for you.”
She hooked her pinky finger out.
“Promise?”
Shimu burrowed into the blanket.
“Childish. I’m going to sleep.”
Su Wanqing laughed softly and gently patted his head through the blanket.
“Good night.”
