“Trainer, how was my time?”
Teio’s debut race was getting closer.
Training demands increased by the day.
Luocheng had thrown himself into studying everything he could about proper coaching.
His university-softened brain slowly began turning again.
If this had been high school, learning all this would have been easy.
Now he had to force the rust off.
Still, by combining textbook knowledge with the experience he had accumulated in the game world, Teio’s results were steadily improving.
Today she ran 0.2 seconds faster than yesterday.
“Good.”
Luocheng nodded.
“Maintain this pace.”
The handbook emphasized that when an Uma Musume’s condition was average or poor, training intensity should be reduced.
Before major races, training should taper so they could enter competition fully rested.
That part made sense.
The problem was judging “condition” without the game UI.
Back there, mood could be read from icons and expressions.
Here, Teio nearly always looked energetic.
Was that Excellent?
Or merely Good?
“Trainer?”
Teio put her hands on her hips.
“Did you get distracted staring at the magnificent face of the great Teio?”
Luocheng reached out and ruffled her hair.
Teio’s childish confidence was part of what made her so likable.
If this expressive version of her had existed in the game world, Luocheng doubted he would ever have deteriorated as badly as he had.
Even back there, Teio had been one of his few anchors.
“The reward will be huge,” Luocheng said.
“We’re going out this weekend, remember?”
“Yes!”
Teio cheered.
Seiun Sky approached from the side.
“Trainer~”
She leaned her head forward.
Luocheng understood immediately and rubbed her hair too.
Seiun Sky’s hair felt different from Teio’s—softer, almost like cotton.
She gave a pleased laugh.
Teio’s eyes instantly lost their shine.
“Sky…
that’s unfair.
You deliberately came over while Trainer was rewarding me.”
“He’s my Trainer too.”
That sentence never failed to irritate Teio.
After sending the two back to training, Luocheng continued working.
Elsewhere, in a dim room—
Manhattan Cafe sat across from another horse girl.
A famous figure at Tracen.
Agnes Tachyon.
The academy’s resident research maniac.
She spent most of her time sealed inside her laboratory doing experiments.
In pursuit of the mysteries of Uma Musume physiology and performance, she had a notorious habit of testing questionable discoveries on whoever happened to be nearby.
Naturally, most people avoided her.
Still, Tachyon had undeniable strengths.
She was incredibly talented.
And extremely intelligent.
Cafe normally disliked dealing with her.
But today, she had come asking for help.
“Trainer said it again.”
“Said what?”
“That this world is a game.”
“That we’re fake.”
“NPCs.”
“Dolls who somehow gained consciousness.”
“Oh?”
Tachyon swirled a vial.
“I think we should take him to a psychiatrist,” Cafe said.
“If this continues, I’m worried his condition will get worse.”
Cafe understood enough about isolation to recognize danger.
She wanted to help Luocheng.
But she wasn’t good at advice.
She could listen.
She could remain beside someone.
But she struggled to give answers.
And despite her terrible personality, Agnes Tachyon was much better at dissecting problems.
“A psychiatrist isn’t necessarily a bad idea,” Tachyon said.
“Judging by your description, Guinea Pig could be suffering from dissociation.”
“Of course, your other possibility is more interesting.”
“What possibility?”
“That he really does move between two worlds and can’t tell which one he’s in.”
Tachyon’s smile widened.
“If there really is some system-controlled game reality out there, I’d love to see it myself.”
“Tachyon.
I’m being serious.”
“So am I.”
Tachyon stood.
“Send him to my lab.”
“I’ll play psychologist for once and see what exactly is going on.”
Thank you so much for reading until the end.
