Luocheng received a message from Manhattan Cafe asking him to visit the laboratory.
The lab?
A familiar horse girl immediately appeared in his mind.
Agnes Tachyon.
Tracen’s infamous experiment maniac.
Tachyon had caused plenty of chaos.
Once, her lab had filled with enough smoke that Luocheng thought the building was on fire.
He had grabbed a fire extinguisher and rushed over.
Luckily, the academy’s disciplinary committee responded quickly and hauled Tachyon away.
Events like that happened often enough that Luocheng had eventually started enjoying them.
The game world was normally so unchanging that Tachyon’s random incidents felt like dynamic events.
For Luocheng, they were proof that something unexpected could still happen.
That alone made him fond of her.
And according to the setting, Agnes Tachyon was a genius.
He had almost forgotten that part after spending so long with the game-world version.
Now that she had real consciousness, speaking with her might be completely different.
Luocheng entered the laboratory.
A strange chemical smell greeted him.
Flasks and bottles filled the room, many glowing with suspicious colors.
The first time he came here, the place had intimidated him.
Now he knew it almost as well as his own office.
Tachyon looked up.
An unreadable smile spread across her face.
“You’re here, Guinea Pig.”
Guinea Pig?
That was what Tachyon normally called her own Trainer.
Luocheng wasn’t hers.
Not yet.
But if things went according to plan, he intended to change that eventually.
“Hello, Tachyon.”
Luocheng sat down.
“I heard about your situation from Cafe,” Tachyon said.
“Tell me more about this so-called game world.”
“You believe me?”
“An unproven theory cannot be rejected merely because it sounds strange.
This isn’t about belief.
It’s about whether evidence exists.”
Luocheng stared at her.
Then smiled.
“There are parts of that world that make me look extremely bad.”
“Science was built by examining uncomfortable truths.”
Tachyon shrugged.
“I’m hardly in a position to preach moral purity.”
“Fine.”
Luocheng told her everything relevant.
He didn’t try to make himself sound better.
He explained the restricted dialogue.
The invisible walls.
The UI.
The Affection system.
The way actions here seemed to correspond to actions there.
The things that appeared unchanged.
The things the system seemed to rewrite.
Tachyon listened without interrupting.
When he finished, she leaned back.
“Interesting.”
“That other world differs from this one in major ways, yet your descriptions create a consistent pattern.”
“How old are you, by the way?”
“Twenty-two.”
“Girlfriend?”
“Do you all count?”
“If you think we do.”
Tachyon smiled.
“Free this weekend?”
“I promised Teio.”
“Another time, then.”
She returned to her desk.
“For now, one point seems highly likely.”
“The ‘Agnes Tachyon’ in that world and I are synchronized in some way.”
“She does the same things I do here.”
Tachyon pinned a sheet of paper to the wall.
“I’m making this my highest-priority research topic.”
“If we identify the connection between the two worlds, then even if you return there, I should continue pursuing the same research.”
“You can go directly to my other self.”
Then Tachyon’s smile sharpened.
“You don’t have command authority over me yet, do you?”
“No.”
“Then we may as well establish a trainer-trainee contract.”
“If your theory is correct, that might let you direct my research from the other side.”
Luocheng had to admit it.
Agnes Tachyon was terrifyingly rational.
And terrifyingly smart.
“If I need anything, I’ll call you, Guinea Pig.”
“Good.
I’m counting on you.”
“I’m rather curious myself.”
Tachyon’s eyes gleamed.
“Is there something wrong with you?”
“Or something wrong with the world?”
“Maybe both?”
“That would be even better.”
Tachyon laughed.
“Ha!
Now that would be worth studying.”
Luocheng smiled.
“Tachyon, I really do like your personality.”
“Oh?”
She looked amused.
“And I find you rather interesting too, Guinea Pig.”
After Luocheng left, Tachyon reclined on the sofa.
It had been a long time since anything had fascinated her this much.
Whether Luocheng’s experiences were delusion or fact almost didn’t matter yet.
The hypothesis itself was extraordinary.
And Tachyon had already noticed another piece of evidence:
Her own body and instincts reacted to Luocheng with a familiarity that her memories could not explain.
There was something real here.
She simply needed to find it.
Perhaps Luocheng himself would be the ideal experimental subject.
