More than three weeks had passed since Chen Yue had begun living in the Wei Manor.
Three weeks of waking up to the scent of polished wood, steaming tea, and freshly laundered linens.
Three weeks of learning the customs of a world that was not her own.
And most of all…
Three weeks of crossing paths with Wei Ran.
Whether in a corridor, on a terrace, or somewhere within the vast estate, she would inevitably encounter those cold, unreadable eyes.
Eyes that never seemed to waver.
Eyes that remained calm no matter what decision he made.
Even when he deliberately ignored her existence.
She was beginning to believe he had been carved from stone.
That morning, she was quietly getting dressed.
She had just washed her face, and tiny droplets of water still slid along her neck, dampening the collar of her light robe.
Her long hair hung loose around her shoulders, still slightly wet in places where it clung to her skin.
She paid it no attention.
Back in her world, people wandered around in pajamas until noon without anyone making a fuss about it.
She was tying her sash when the door suddenly opened.
Without a knock.
Wei Ran stepped inside.
He didn’t look like a man expecting to surprise someone.
His stride was confident.
His expression calm.
As though he had simply come to give an instruction.
But the instant his gaze landed on her— Standing there in a thin robe.
Cheeks still fresh from washing.
Damp strands of hair resting against her neck— He froze.
A brief silence fell over the room.
One second.
Two.
Then he turned around almost too quickly.
“I…
didn’t realize you were…
occupied.” He could have left.
He could have closed the door.
He could have pretended nothing had happened.
But she had already seen it.
That tiny flicker in his eyes.
The tension in his shoulders.
That brief moment when the perfect Young Master Wei had actually looked…
Flustered.
And she had seen everything.
A mischievous smile spread across her lips.
“Oh, this?” she said casually.
“It’s nothing.
People walk around like this all the time in my world.” He didn’t answer.
His back remained turned toward her, as though looking at a woman in a robe might cost him a thousand years of cultivation.
“You can turn around, you know.” Still silence.
“I’m not naked.” She emphasized the last word on purpose.
Just to see his reaction.
His shoulders stiffened slightly.
Got you.
Slowly, he turned just enough to glance at her from the corner of his eye.
Then immediately looked away again.
As though he were caught between courtesy and some absurd level of self-discipline.
“You should knock before entering someone’s room.” “In my world, we knock too,” she replied sweetly.
“Yet somehow, you’re the one who walked in.” His lips tightened.
He clearly hated having his mistakes pointed out.
Chen Yue stepped closer, barefoot and smiling.
For once, the mighty Wei Ran was the uncomfortable one.
And she had no intention of wasting such a rare opportunity.
“It’s funny.” He remained silent.
“You’re always so cold.
So intimidating.
So untouchable.” Another step.
“And yet all it takes is seeing me in a robe for you to panic.” “I am not panicking.” “Oh, really?” She moved directly in front of him.
Hands clasped behind her back.
Smile growing wider.
“Then why won’t you look at me?” Wei Ran looked.
For half a second.
Then immediately looked away.
Chen Yue burst into laughter.
A bright, delighted laugh.
“Unbelievable.” He narrowed his eyes.
“The great Young Master Wei…
defeated by a little bit of exposed skin.” “You have no sense of propriety.” “And you have no sense of humor.” She took another step.
To her delight, he stepped back.
He actually backed away.
She advanced again.
He retreated again.
They repeated the strange dance twice more.
Until his back touched the door.
This time, he stopped.
So did she.
Now they stood close enough to feel each other’s warmth.
Morning sunlight split their profiles in half.
Golden light and shadow.
Chen Yue placed one hand against the door beside his head.
The wood clicked softly.
Wei Ran flinched.
Barely.
But she saw it.
And that made her laugh even harder.
“Oh…
now this is interesting.” “You’re enjoying this far too much.” “Usually you’re the one controlling everything.” Her smile turned positively wicked.
“Let me enjoy myself for once.” She deliberately looked him up and down in the most shameless manner possible.
Wei Ran met her gaze.
His dark eyes seemed to say: You are playing with something you don’t understand.
And yet she refused to back down.
Finally, he gently moved her arm aside.
Not violently.
But with unmistakable authority.
“Enough.” His voice was calm.
“I don’t have time for your childish games.” He turned toward the door.
Ready to leave.
Chen Yue immediately grabbed his sleeve.
Not because she could overpower him.
That was impossible.
But because she refused to let the game end so soon.
“Wait.” “Chen Yue.” She closed the door again.
The click echoed throughout the room.
“You entered without knocking.” He sighed.
“So?” “So you take responsibility.” One eyebrow almost lifted.
“Responsibility for what?” “For staying here until I’m satisfied.” “You’re insane.” “A little.” Her grin widened.
“But you already knew that.” She stepped closer again.
Wei Ran took a step back.
This time, she didn’t chase him.
Instead, she gently pushed him toward the edge of the bed.
Not with force.
Just enough to make her intentions clear.
“Sit down.” “No.” “Sit.” “No.” “Sit.” For a moment, neither moved.
Then, surprisingly…
Wei Ran sat.
Not because she had ordered him to.
But because he had realized she wasn’t going to stop.
Victory flashed across her face.
She approached him slowly.
Then leaned forward.
Her damp hair slipped over both sides of her face and brushed lightly against his cheek.
For the first time…
She was looking down at him.
And she loved it.
“Well, Young Master,” she said.
“It seems you’re terribly afraid of women.” Wei Ran slowly raised his eyes.
Something had changed.
The coldness remained.
But beneath it lurked something warmer.
Darker.
Far more dangerous.
“It isn’t the woman who concerns me.” “Oh?” “Then what does?” His gaze never left hers.
“The woman who doesn’t understand what she’s provoking.” A soft laugh escaped her lips.
“Maybe I understand perfectly.” Their eyes locked.
The challenge returned.
Neither willing to surrender.
Neither willing to look away.
They were so close now that even the smallest movement disturbed the other’s breathing.
Chen Yue smiled again.
Ready to say something even more outrageous.
Then suddenly— Wei Ran moved.
Not violently.
Not aggressively.
But with calculated speed.
In a single motion, he slipped to the side, caught her by the shoulders, and reversed their positions.
“Ah!” She let out a startled cry.
Not from fear.
Not from pain.
Only surprise.
The next thing she knew, she was lying on the bed.
And Wei Ran was leaning over her.
He wasn’t holding her down.
Wasn’t trapping her.
Wasn’t touching her at all.
And yet his presence surrounded her completely.
Suddenly, all the advantage she thought she possessed vanished.
“Do you truly believe such simple tricks can intimidate me?” he asked.
She tried to sit up.
Immediately, he placed one hand on the mattress beside her head.
Blocking her path without actually touching her.
She could feel his warmth.
Could feel his presence.
Every instinct screamed that the situation had changed.
“I thought I was being respectful toward you,” he said quietly.
“But I’ve just realized something.” Her pulse quickened.
“What?” A faint smile touched his lips.
“You enjoy provoking me.” “What?” “You heard me.” Their eyes challenged one another once again.
His breath brushed lightly against her lips.
She could have pushed him away.
He could have stepped back.
Neither moved.
Slowly, Chen Yue lifted her hand.
Then gently placed two fingers against his cheek.
Testing him.
Testing herself.
Testing how far this could go.
His eyes darkened.
“I prefer you without the mask,” she whispered.
For a long moment, he simply stared at her.
Then suddenly, he straightened.
The moment shattered.
Wei Ran adjusted his dark collar.
Ran a hand through his hair with that elegant, proud gesture that belonged only to him.
Instantly, the mask returned.
Young Master Wei.
Cold.
Untouchable.
Distant.
Chen Yue slowly sat up on the bed.
Her cheeks still carried traces of warmth.
Wei Ran stepped toward her.
Then unexpectedly placed his hands over hers.
Only briefly.
Just long enough to make sure she was paying attention.
When he spoke, his voice sounded cold as ever.
But this time…
A smile hid beneath the words.
“Prepare yourself.” She blinked.
“For what?” “This evening.” His smile deepened ever so slightly.
“We’re going out.” Chen Yue stared.
“Going out?
Where?” “You’ll see.” He turned and walked toward the door.
Opened it.
Then paused.
Without looking back, he said: “Pink would suit you.” The door closed behind him.
Silence returned.
Chen Yue remained sitting on the bed.
Mouth slightly open.
Hands still warm from his touch.
Then she burst into laughter.
“Pink?
Really, Wei Ran?” But despite her teasing…
Her heart was racing.
Not from fear.
Not from embarrassment.
But excitement.
Because she suddenly realized something.
The game had truly begun.
