Delphine stepped a few paces away from Logan and Odette, but she was still close enough for Logan to hear whatever she was about to say.
And he watched as his aunt made a phone call in front of him.
"Hello? Freya. Are you not coming home again tonight? I'm already in the city and will be heading..." She paused mid-sentence because the person on the other side of the call had rudely interrupted her.
"Oh, I see. It's alright. I understand." Delphine slowly lowered the phone in her hand with a sad look on her face.
Then she exhaled slowly before forcing herself to smile again as she turned around to face Logan and Odette.
"Is everything alright?" Logan asked carefully as he tried not to make the situation worse.
"Everything is fine, Mon cher. It's just family matters. You know how complicated family-related issues can be, non? Anyways, come. Let us not keep your beautiful bodyguard waiting with my bags in her hands all night."
Though her stepdaughter had rudely refused to meet her, just as always, Delphine deemed it wasn't necessary to drag Logan into her family issue.
So she tried brushing off his question with a smile on her face.
However, Logan could clearly see through her act, but he decided not to pry.
In a situation like this, it was best to give Delphine the space she wanted, and since she clearly didn't want to sour the mood between them, Logan was more than happy to play along as well.
Moving on, everyone stepped into the car, and Odette drove them back toward the city.
Throughout the drive, Delphine could be seen sitting extremely close to Logan as she held his arm firmly whilst chatting about how they've been so close in the past.
Of course, Logan didn't recall any of what she was talking about, but he kept smiling throughout the convo so as to try not to be rude.
Besides, he could see Delphine was genuinely having fun, and the worried look on her face had already vanished, so Logan began to ask funny questions regarding what he might have done as a child whilst playing with her.
"So what did I dress up as during the Halloween party?"
"You won't believe it, Mon cher. You ran straight to my arms screaming 'I'm Tarzan, King Of The Jungle' whilst dressed in your birthday suit."
"What? I was naked?"
Delphine chuckled softly as she nodded in response. "Yep, you called me Jane and promised to protect me from all the dangerous jungle monsters."
"Woah, I must have been a really wild kid back then, huh."
"Yeah, you were pretty wild for a six-year-old." Delphine smiled and held his arm even more as she replayed the memories of their past together.
Whilst doing this, Delphine didn't even know she had already begun resting her head against his shoulder, similar to what a couple does during dates or whenever they were spending time together.
Of course, Odette, who was still in the driver's seat, stole a glance at the rearview mirror, and she could see the two of them being all lovey-dovey behind her, and this made her feel something even she couldn't explain.
Logan also noticed how her grip tightened on the steering wheel, and he smiled with a naughty smirk on his face before blowing a kiss back to her through the mirror.
"Hmph..." This immediately caught Odette by surprise as her cheeks reddened in response.
But just right then, Odette suddenly noticed something in the rearview mirror once more.
But this time, it wasn't Logan or Delphine she was staring at.
It was past them, through the back window, and she squinted her gaze with a serious expression on her face.
Logan instantly noticed this as well, and he asked. "What is it?"
"I think we're being followed."
Hearing this, Delphine instantly pulled herself out of her dream state.
"What? We're being followed?"
"Yes, ma'am."
"For how long?"
"For a few minutes now. I noticed them a few blocks away before, but I didn't think much of it at the time. But now, I'm certain we're definitely being followed."
"Oh my. How many are they?" Delphine asked with a terrified look on her face.
"I'm seeing four cars, ma'am. Four sedans to be exact, and they've been matching every turn we make." Odette replied as her eyes flickered between the road and the mirror.
Hearing this, Logan twisted around to look through the back window, and sure enough, he noticed the headlights behind them.
They didn't seem to be driving fast behind them, but they didn't seem to be driving slow either.
It just felt like they wanted to be at a safe distance where they wouldn't be easily noticed, but they also didn't want to be too far either so as not to lose track of them as well.
Meanwhile, inside the leading sedan, a man in the passenger seat could be seen pressing a radio to his mouth as he watched their target car through the windshield.
"Yes, sir. It's been confirmed. The target is in the vehicle. I repeat, the target is in the vehicle."
"I heard you the first time, you fool, just tell me if anyone else is with her."
"Yes, I see a boy and a female driver with the target, sir."
"Kill them, the boss needs the target alive. But as for the remaining two, just kill them."
"Understood." The man lowered the radio and glanced at the driver who was already reaching for his weapon tucked beneath his seat.
Now the cars behind Odette's vehicle drove faster and closer to Odette, and she immediately noticed this.
"They're getting closer," she warned and urged Logan and Delphine to place their heads down.
"I'm going to stop the car soon, but I want the both of you to remain inside with the doors locked no matter what you hear." Odette instantly instructed with a stern look on her face as she drove faster to widen the distance between them and the cars following closely behind.
