“What? What happened?”
Thinking it might be a trick to make him let his guard down after pretending to fall, he remained cautious while also watching the horn rabbit. The horn rabbit was still twitching faintly, but it didn’t seem like it was trying to resist or attack anymore.
“What should I do…? Um… I’m not sure, but if I bring it back, I can sell it, right?”
He picked up a long wooden branch and poked it. The horn rabbit suddenly opened its eyes wide.
“GYAAH!”
Startled, he jumped back—but quickly reminded himself, I have to bring it back! He raised the branch and brought it down on it.
After a few swings, the horn rabbit finally stopped moving.
“Ugh… what do I do…? If I put it in my bag, it’ll get covered in blood…”
“I should’ve read up in the reference room about how to carry it…”
After thinking for a moment, he took the Mana-Berry he had gathered out of the sack and used the empty bag to store the horn rabbit instead. Several of the Mana-Berry stems had broken from swinging the sack around.
He gathered more Mana-Berry nearby, bundled about ten stalks into three bunches, and rewrapped the cut ends with wet cloth. Then he covered them with a dry cloth on top and slipped them into his bag.
He glanced at the bird that had fallen from the sky—still no movement.
“…No way…”
He cautiously approached and poked it with a stick, but there was no reaction.
“What? It ate the guild bread… Could it be poison?”
He considered that if it was poisoned, the meat might be unsafe. But then he decided the materials might still be sellable, so he carried it back to the guild.
“You didn’t do anything dangerous, right? You won’t be paid a subjugation reward, you know?”
As Ren finally arrived at the Adventurer’s Guild while struggling under the weight of his load, the deputy guild master, Mikaila, called out to him upon seeing him carrying a sack with the horn rabbit’s head sticking out and a large bird.
“I threw bread at it… and it hit it…”
“Bread?”
For a moment, Mikaila frowned in confusion, but then seemed to recall something and glanced toward the dining hall.
“You threw that stone bread at it?”
“Stone bread…?”
“The bread from the dining hall. The one that’s hard like a rock.”
“Ah—yeah. But the bird is different. It fell down after eating the bread. Maybe it was poisoned…?”
“…It probably just choked. Its neck is swollen in the middle.”
Looking closer, there really was a bulge in the bird’s throat. When they turned it upside down and shook it, the bread rolled out of its mouth.
“Hard bread… terrifying…”
“You don’t always get that kind of luck—hitting something with bread, or making it choke. Once you leave the gate, you can be attacked by monsters at any time. Be careful.”
“Yes…”
Chastised by Mikaila, Ren slumped his shoulders. He understood better than anyone that this time he had simply been lucky.
After selling the herbs and horn rabbit at the purchase counter, he returned once again to the reference room.
When he entered, the same elderly man from the morning was there.
“We’re closing at sundown. Hurry up.”
“Eh?”
The sky visible through the window had already begun to turn slightly red.
(Ah… right. Once it gets dark, it’ll be pitch black… I do have that glowing box that can light things up, though…)
For a moment, the thought of showing the “box” skill crossed his mind—but he felt it would be better not to reveal it.
(Right… I should get back before it gets completely dark. They might… worry… I guess…)
If he wasn’t home for dinner, it might raise suspicion.
And more than that, he also didn’t want anyone to know he had come to the adventurer’s guild.
“Just… a little longer. I’ll just take a quick look.”
Near the herb illustration shelves, he found several beginner adventurer documents—things like “Weapons and Armor” and “How to Respond When Encountering Monsters”—and began searching through them.
