Volume 1: Rebirth Arc
Chapter 24: The Hardened Edge
The agony of the cellular fusion felt as though liquid fire was being injected directly into Shu’s veins.
Every breath tasted of copper and burning ozone, and his heart hammered against his ribs in a chaotic, erratic rhythm.
With a final, visceral snap, the microscopic purple threads knitting across his right arm locked into place.
The jagged, bleeding slash had vanished, replaced by a smooth, dark layer of semi-translucent chitinous skin that hugged his forearm like a second, armored muscle.
Shu gasped, collapsing forward onto his hands and knees.
He was drenched in cold sweat, his entire body trembling violently from the sheer biological shock, but the feverish haze clouding his brain had evaporated.
His mind snapped back into sharp, crystalline focus.
He slowly flexed his right hand.
The response time was instantaneous—faster and sharper than it had ever been.
The living armor embedded in his flesh hadn’t crippled him; it had yielded a terrifying, synthetic strength.
“Shu…” Kai’Sa whispered, staring down at his arm with wide, terrified eyes.
She scrambled back a few inches, her small hands hovering protectively near her own chest.
“Your arm…
what did it do to you?”
Shu looked up, his eyes meeting hers.
The wild panic in her gaze mirrored his own internal reality.
They were no longer entirely human, at least not by the standards of the surface world they had left behind.
“It didn’t kill us,” Shu rasped, his voice steady despite the lingering tremors in his limbs.
He pushed himself up from the elastic floor, testing his balance.
His legs held firm, the pain in his cracked rib dulled to a manageable ache.
“It gave us a weapon.”
Before Kai’Sa could reply, the deep, rhythmic hum of the corridor shifted.
Far down the organic tunnel, a low, collective vibration echoed through the pulsing walls—the sound of dozens of multi-jointed legs sprinting in unison toward their location.
The scent of fresh blood from Shu’s earlier wound had acted like a beacon.
Shu’s eyes narrowed as he gripped the jagged granite shard with his newly reinforced hand.
The descent into the abyss was over.
Now, the real hunt began.
“Stay right behind me,” Shu commanded, his voice carrying an unyielding edge.
“We move.”
