They were coming from both ends of the corridor—trapped in a linear tube of living flesh with nowhere to run.

“Shu, they’re surrounding us!” Kai’Sa cried out, pressing her back tightly against the warm, pulsing wall as the clicking of multi-jointed limbs echoed from the darkness ahead and behind.

Shu’s mind operated with the cold, hyper-focused clarity of a machine.

Panic was a luxury for the dead.

He dropped into a low, athletic crouch, his eyes darting across the narrow confines of the tunnel.

The biological armor on his right arm thrummed with a faint, sympathetic pulse, synchronizing with his heartbeat.

He didn’t feel weak anymore; the mutagenic fusion had rewired his muscular efficiency, pushing past the natural limits of a six-year-old frame.

“Get behind me and keep your head down,” Shu ordered, his voice sharp and absolute.

From the shadows ahead, the lead Voidling lunged—a sleek, armored beast launching its body through the narrow tube with terrifying speed.

Behind them, the screech of a second creature echoed, closing the escape vector.

Shu didn’t flinch.

As the forward beast closed the distance, extending its razor-sharp forelimbs for a killing strike, Shu didn’t dodge backward.

He stepped directly into its trajectory.

Using his low center of gravity, he sidestepped the primary swipe, letting the momentum carry the creature past him.

In the same fluid motion, his newly reinforced right arm snapped upward.

The organic chitin encasing his forearm acted as a natural bludgeon, driving forward with a force far exceeding any normal child’s capacity.

CRACK.

His fist struck the creature’s vulnerable, unarmored throat membrane dead-center.

The impact sounded like a dry branch snapping under a boot.

The Voidling shrieked, its body convulsing violently as the internal shockwave ruptured its respiratory tract.

It slammed hard against the pulsing wall before collapsing into a motionless heap of smoking black carapace.

Without pausing to catch his breath, Shu whirled around to face the second threat closing in from behind, raising his jagged granite shard in his left hand as his new biological armor hummed with predatory readiness.
