899.M41 – Amerikon Sector The bridge of the Battle Barge *Talons of Terra* remained shrouded in near darkness.

Only the glow of hololithic projectors and tactical displays illuminated the chamber.

Hundreds of red runes floated above the central command dais, each marking an Imperial station, mining outpost, or colony scattered across the vast Amerikon Sector.Full novel: Warhammer 40k The Hidden Tallons — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Nearly half had gone silent.

Chapter Master Asterion Corven studied the display without moving.

Master of the Fleet Decimus broke the silence.

“Five more systems have ceased responding, my lord.” “No Warp disturbances?” “None.” “Xenos incursions?” “None detected.” Corven slowly folded his arms.

“Yet Imperial worlds continue to disappear.” “Yes, my lord.” — Elsewhere aboard the *Talons of Terra*, the Chapter’s Reclusiam echoed with solemn prayer.

Rows of black-armoured Space Marines knelt before a towering statue of the Emperor.

Chaplain Malthus raised his Crozius Arcanum.

“The darkness hides many enemies.” The assembled Battle Brothers answered as one.

**”We are the Emperor’s hidden blade.”** “The shadows breed corruption.” **”We are the cleansing flame.”** “The traitor hides.” **”We shall find him.”** “The xenos stalks mankind.” **”We shall hunt him.”** “The Emperor protects.” **”Through our hands.”** The prayers ended.

Without another word, the warriors rose and returned to their duties.

— Deep inside the station Epsilon-Seven…

Scout Sergeant Varian continued his investigation.

The station’s machine spirit remained active, despite nearly five decades without maintenance.

Brother Cassian worked tirelessly at one of the cogitator banks.

“I’ve recovered fragments of the navigation records.” Varian stepped beside him.

“Show me.” A star map appeared.

Most flight paths had been erased.

Except one.

A single Imperial cruiser had departed the station fifty-one years earlier.

Designation: **Merciless Death** Destination: Unknown.

Cassian highlighted another anomaly.

“It wasn’t alone.” Varian narrowed his eyes.

“Escort vessels?” “No.” The Scout enlarged the data.

“Twelve unidentified contacts.” “No transponder codes.” “No registry.” “They followed the *Merciless Death* after it departed.” Varian immediately opened a secure vox channel.

“Scout Sergeant Varian to Chapter Master Corven.” “Proceed.” “We’ve confirmed the *Merciless Death* departed this station.” “It was pursued.” A pause.

“By whom?” “Unknown.” Corven’s reply came instantly.

“Recover every remaining data fragment.” “Leave nothing behind.” — Across the Amerikon Sector…

The Strike Cruiser *Silent Judgment* translated into orbit above the mining world of Karthax Primus.

Unlike the abandoned stations, this world still lived.

Millions of Imperial citizens continued their daily labours beneath towering manufactorums.

Governor Albrecht personally welcomed the Hidden Talons.

“My lords.” “We are honoured.” Captain Lucien Voss remained expressionless.

“We require information.” “The cruiser *Merciless Death*.” The governor hesitated.

“I have heard the name.” “When?” “My grandfather spoke of it.” “He claimed strange lights appeared in the void shortly before it vanished.” “What kind of lights?” The governor swallowed.

“Black.” Captain Voss stared at him.

“Black is not light.” “Exactly, my lord.” “It was as though…” “…the stars disappeared.” — Hours later…

Chief Librarian Kaelen descended into meditation.

Within the Librarius, ancient wards shimmered across the walls as he reached into the Immaterium.

Most psykers would have been driven mad attempting such a feat.

Kaelen merely listened.

Whispers drifted through the Warp.

Thousands.

Millions.

Voices of the dead.

Prayers.

Fear.

Hope.

Then— A single voice.

Cold.

Ancient.

*”Find me…”* Kaelen’s eyes snapped open.

Blood ran from his nose.

A nearby Epistolary rushed forward.

“Chief Librarian!” Kaelen steadied himself.

“It knows we’re searching.” “What knows?” Kaelen looked toward the stars.

“I don’t know.” — Far beyond Imperial space…

A vessel floated inside a dense asteroid field.

Its armour bore no Chapter markings.

Only scars.

Within its command chamber, hooded figures gathered around a hololithic projection of the Hidden Talons’ fleet.

“They’ve found Epsilon-Seven.” “They’re recovering the records.” A fourth figure stepped from the darkness.

His power armour was ancient—its original colours long obscured beneath layers of black paint.

One shoulder still carried the faint outline of a hydra.

“The sons of Corax remain efficient.” Another warrior asked quietly, “Do we destroy them?” The armoured figure laughed.

“No.” “They’re walking exactly where we want them.” He reached forward.

The hololithic image changed.

An Imperial cruiser appeared.

Scarred.

Drifting.

Silent.

**Merciless Death.** “Everything depends upon that ship.” — Back aboard the *Talons of Terra*…

Master of the Forge Hadrian completed his examination of the recovered data cylinder.

“My Chapter Master.” “I found something hidden.” Corven turned.

“What?” “A secondary data layer.” Hadrian activated it.

Ancient pict recordings flickered into existence.

The bridge of the *Merciless Death* appeared.

Crew members ran frantically between stations.

Warning sirens blared.

The captain shouted orders.

“Bring us about!” “No response!” “The engines won’t answer!” A Navigator screamed somewhere off-screen.

Then— Every crewman stopped moving.

At the exact same moment.

Each slowly turned toward the viewing port.

The recording’s pict-feed adjusted automatically.

Outside the ship…

There was nothing.

No planets.

No stars.

Only absolute darkness.

A darkness so complete that even the void itself seemed to have vanished.

The captain whispered one final sentence.

“Emperor…” “…what have we found?” The recording ended abruptly.

Even the veteran Astartes remained silent.

Finally, Chapter Master Corven spoke.

“This was no ordinary disappearance.” Master of the Fleet Decimus nodded.

“The *Merciless Death* found something.” Corven looked across the bridge.

“And whatever it found…” “…is still waiting.” As the Hidden Talons continued their search through the forgotten reaches of the Amerikon Sector, none aboard the fleet realized that unseen eyes watched every course correction, every astropathic transmission, and every decision they made.

The hunters had entered the trap willingly.

Now the trap was beginning to close.
