899.M41 – Amerikon Sector The void was silent.
For three days the Hidden Talons followed the trail left behind by the false distress beacons.
Every hour brought another dead vessel, another abandoned station, another fragment of a mystery that seemed carefully arranged to draw them deeper into the forgotten reaches of the Amerikon Sector.
On the bridge of the *Talons of Terra*, Chapter Master Asterion Corven stood before the tactical hololith.
Master of the Fleet Decimus looked up from his station.
“Chapter Master we have received another transmission.” “The Merciless Death?” “It carries her transponder.” Corven’s crimson lenses narrowed.
“Source?” Decimus enlarged the sector map.
A blinking rune appeared almost six light-years away.
“System designation: A-119.” Captain Lucien Voss frowned.
“Impossible.” “We searched that system six days ago.” “We did.” “And it was empty.” The bridge fell silent.
Chief Librarian Kaelen finally spoke.
“Either someone moved the beacon…” “…or they wanted us to believe they did.” Corven gathered the Chapter Council.
“The enemy has dictated our movements since entering this sector.” He looked around the chamber.
“That ends today.” Master of the Fleet Decimus nodded.
“What are your orders?” “We divide the fleet.” Several officers exchanged glances it was a dangerous decision.
Corven continued.
“Talons of Terra and Shadow’s Wing will investigate the new signal while the Silent Judgment will continue along the original flight path of the Merciless Death.” Captain Voss inclined his head.
“If this is another trap?” Corven’s voice remained calm.
“Then the hunters become the hunted.” Strike Cruiser Silent Judgment altered course.
Captain Marcus Thane commanded the vessel, a veteran who had served the Hidden Talons for over two centuries.
His orders were simple ignore every distress call ignore every unidentified transmission following the only confirmed route of the Merciless Death.
Hours later…
The decision paid off.
“Captain!” The auspex officer pointed toward his display.
“We’ve found engine residue.” “Age?” “Approximately fifty-one years.” Captain Thane smiled.
“Continue tracking.” For the first time since entering the Amerikon Sector…
They possessed a genuine lead.
— Meanwhile…
The Talons of Terra entered System A-119.
Long-range augurs immediately located the source of the distress beacon it drifted alone beyond the system’s outer asteroid belt.
Captain Voss studied the magnified image.
“It isn’t a cruiser.” Master of the Fleet Decimus confirmed it.
“It’s an automated communications buoy.” Corven gave a single order.
“Recover it.” A Thunderhawk delivered a squad led by Veteran Sergeant Darius the buoy was ancient its Imperial Aquila had been deliberately scratched away.
Brother Cassian connected his armour to its cogitator.
“I’ve gained access.” “What do you have?” “The beacon has only one programmed function.” Cassian looked up.
“It broadcasts the distress call of the *Merciless Death* every six hours.” Darius scanned the surrounding void.
“No power source?” “There shouldn’t be one.” Yet the beacon continued to operate steadily and patiently for decades.
Brother Oren frowned.
“This wasn’t built to survive fifty years.” “No.” Cassian examined the machine spirit more closely.
“It has been maintained recently.” Then without warning— Warning runes flashed crimson.
“Incoming contacts!” The asteroid field erupted with movement.
Twenty small attack craft burst from concealment.
Their engines burned cold blue Imperial in design but carrying no identifying markings.
“They’re closing fast!” The Thunderhawk accelerated away from the beacon.
The attack craft opened fire autocannon rounds ripped through the darkness the Hidden Talons answered with disciplined bursts from the Thunderhawk’s heavy bolters.
One enemy craft exploded.
A second spiraled into an asteroid.
But more continued .
The frigate **Night’s Vigil** raced toward the engagement.
Its lance batteries fired first.
Brilliant beams of energy lanced through the void, vaporizing three enemy craft instantly.
The remaining attackers scattered.
Captain Arlen smiled.
“They’re breaking.” “No…” His vox officer interrupted.
“They’re repositioning.” The enemy fighters ignored the frigate.
Instead…
They flew directly toward the communications buoy.
“What are they doing?” Seconds later—The buoy detonated.
The explosion was enormous far greater than its size should have allowed the shockwave rolled across the asteroid field.
Fragments of burning metal scattered in every direction every trace of evidence vanished Captain Arlen stared at the expanding cloud of debris.
“They destroyed their own trap.” A secure vox transmission reached the Battle Barge Captain Marcus Thane of the *Silent Judgment* appeared upon the hololith.
“My Chapter Master.” Corven turned.
“Report.” “We’ve located the original plasma wake of the *Merciless Death*.” “Can you follow it?” “Yes.” “It leads toward the Dorian Expanse.” Master of the Fleet Decimus quickly checked the charts.
“There are no inhabited systems in the Expanse no Imperial stations no trade routes and no reason for a cruiser to travel there.” Corven answered quietly.
“Unless it wished to disappear.” Hidden deep within the asteroid field, a cloaked vessel watched the Hidden Talons depart the bridge remained almost completely dark.
Only the glow of tactical displays illuminated the figures standing within one warrior removed his helmet his face was scarred by centuries of war.
“The false beacon is destroyed.” Another nodded.
“They’ve found the true trail.” The scarred warrior smiled.
“Exactly as planned.” A younger Legionnaire looked confused.
“Why let them?” The veteran looked toward the stars.
“Because the relic cannot awaken until the sons of Corax arrive.” Silence filled the bridge.
The younger warrior finally understood.
“We’re not leading them away from the *Merciless Death*…” The veteran slowly replaced his helmet.
“We’re bringing them to it.” Hours later, the Hidden Talons fleet reunited.
Corven listened to Captain Thane’s report in silence.
The plasma trail was old faint but unmistakable.
For fifty-one years it had remained hidden in one of the most isolated regions of the Amerikon Sector.
Now…
The trail pointed toward a region of space marked on no Imperial charts.
The Dorian Expanse.
Chief Librarian Kaelen looked troubled.
“I have heard that name before.” Corven turned toward him.
“Where?” “Ancient Raven Guard records.” “They speak of a place beyond the edge of the Emperor’s light.” “A place abandoned during the Great Crusade.” “A place where entire fleets vanished without explanation.” The Chapter Master looked once more at the glowing line on the hololith.
“Prepare the fleet.” “Destination?” Corven’s voice echoed across the bridge.
“The Dorian Expanse whatever waits there our century-long hunt begins today.” Far beyond the Imperium’s forgotten frontier, in a region where even the stars seemed dimmer, the ancient cruiser *Merciless Death* continued its endless drift for the first time in half a century…
Its engines flickered only for a heartbeat.
But somewhere within the darkness of its vast hull…
Something had awakened.
