Xing Hui made a phone call to the hospital leadership and had Zhou You placed on leave. As for when he would return to work, that would be decided after Xing Hui came back.
If it weren’t for the situation on the Northern Front requiring his attention, Xing Hui would have kept Zhou You tied to his side, eating, drinking, sleeping, even using the bathroom together, leaving him nowhere he could go.
About half an hour later, a photo arrived on Xing Hui’s phone, showing Zhou You safely home. Only then did he feel his breathing return to something close to normal.
Xing Hui unfastened the button at the collar of his military uniform, tugged at it impatiently, then went on to undo his cufflinks. As he did so, a ruthless thought slowly took shape in his mind, if Zhou You dared to run away again, then this time, he absolutely would not show mercy.
He would make Zhou You regret it. Regret it so deeply it carved into his bones. Regret it so much that he would never dare again.
Then another thought followed: he might as well go and bind Zhou You up right now and fuck him senseless.
Who told Zhou You to keep going against him again and again?
After all these years, this bastard still refused to change his ways. He had to push Xing Hui to the brink before he would finally behave.
Sure enough, it was because Xing Hui had treated Zhou You too well these past two years that he’d grown more and more daring.
Xing Hui cursed again in his heart, cursing himself for being cheap, cursing Zhou You for having no conscience at all.
Over and over, he asked himself why Zhou You still hadn’t learned his lesson.
Why did he insist on angering him every so often?
Why, after all this time, was he still so disobedient?
In truth, Xing Hui knew very well that even after getting married and obtaining the certificate, Zhou You had never intended to honestly stay by his side and live a steady life with him. Instead, he was always waiting for an opportunity to leave.
That was why Xing Hui kept such a tight watch on him.
What he couldn’t understand was this, back then, it was Zhou You who had come to provoke him first. It was Zhou You who had used every possible means to climb into his bed.
So why, in the end, had it become him who was doing everything he could to keep Zhou You by his side?
At this moment, Xing Hui’s anger transformed into grievance, boundless grievance, flooding over him like a raging torrent, drowning him until his nose stung with unshed tears in an utterly undignified way.
He collapsed onto the sofa, his hand drifting to his wedding ring. As he rubbed it absentmindedly, a thought struck him. He took out his phone and opened the home surveillance feed.
When Zhou You appeared on the screen, the bitter, aching heart that had been hanging in his chest finally found somewhere to settle.
Zhou You had just come out of the bathroom. He had already changed into loungewear, his hair still slightly damp. The bangs at his forehead had grown a bit longer, partly covering his eyes. His expression looked a little dazed, making him seem both foolish and well behaved.
Xing Hui knew that this obedient exterior was an illusion. The real Zhou You was a rabbit that could bite, bite viciously, the kind that bit to the death.
Zhou You drank half a cup of warm water, his habitual routine after showering. Then he tossed a preserved plum into his mouth. After finishing the plum, he drank the remaining water in one go.
Finally, he picked up his phone and dialed a number. Xing Hui stared intently at the screen, wanting to see which adulterous bastard Zhou You was calling. He had even already planned out how he would deal with that damned adulterer, when his own phone rang.
Xing Hui froze for a moment, then delight spread across his face. So the adulterer was himself. In that case, everything was different.
He adjusted his expression, pressed the answer button and deliberately lowered his voice. “What is it?”
“Did you tell the leadership to give me leave?” Zhou You asked, fully aware of the answer.
Xing Hui straightened his posture, cleared his throat and continued with his harsh tone. “Yes. What about it?”
“Xing Hui!” Zhou You gripped his phone tightly, his fingertips turning faintly white as he restrained his anger. “Why would you do this?”
“Why?” Xing Hui let out a cold laugh. “You angered me and now you’re asking why? I just left and you’re already thinking about leaving me. Tell me, aren’t you just asking for trouble?” He leaned back against the sofa with an air of absolute certainty. “Before I get home, you’d better stay put in the house. If you dare step outside even once, you’ll pay for it when I get back. You’d better think it through carefully!”
Zhou You’s face was tense, his chest feeling unbearably tight. He took a deep breath and said in as calm a tone as he could manage, “You’re completely unreasonable. We’ve been married for five years already and you’re still pulling this house arrest routine!”
Xing Hui put on an innocent expression. “You know we’ve been married for five years yet you keep talking about leaving. You even told me to find an Omega to have children. What do you take me for? And what do you take yourself for? Is this how you treat our marriage?”
Zhou You restrained himself and said nothing.
Apparently finding that insufficient, Xing Hui continued his threats. “If you don’t behave, I’ll fly back right now and tie you to the bed. Do you want to be unable to get out of bed or do you want to be unable to leave the house? Wife, you choose.”
Zhou You’s chest rose and fell violently with anger. He panted shortly, his voice trembling as he said, “I choose for you to die outside and never come back!” With that, he hung up.
Xing Hui stared at the disconnected call, bristling with rage. Then he shouted at the surveillance camera, “What a shame to disappoint you, I’ll be back very soon. My dear wife, wait for your husband in bed!”
Zhou You grabbed the cup at hand and hurled it toward the camera. Then he turned and walked into the bedroom, slamming the door shut with force.
This time, Xing Hui quieted down. He sat on the sofa, staring at the surveillance feed while sulking.
There used to be surveillance in the bedroom as well but over the past two years Zhou You had behaved much better. Besides, the bedroom was where the two of them slept, so the camera had been removed. Now that he thought about it, it had been removed too early.
Yu Jiming walked in and noticed Xing Hui’s dark expression. “What’s wrong?”
Xing Hui didn’t hide it. “We argued again. He keeps saying he wants me to let him go.”
Yu Jiming froze for a brief moment, then asked, “You two got into another fight?”
“What fight?” Xing Hui frowned.
“Then did you hit him again?”
“When have I ever hit him?” Xing Hui’s voice shot up. “Do you think I’d ever bring myself to hit him? He’d be the one hitting me, if anything!”
Yu Jiming laughed, sat down on the sofa and sighed. “You two must be enemies from a past life, to run into each other in this one.”
Xing Hui kept a grim face and said nothing.
Seeing him like this, Yu Jiming sighed again. “Alright. If he really could leave, he would’ve left long ago. Don’t overthink it. He’s just saying things out of anger. Did you forget how badly you scared him a couple of years ago? Just give in to him a little now.”
Even though that was said, Xing Hui still couldn’t put his mind at ease. He sent messages one by one to the housekeeper and the bodyguards and even deployed extra manpower to keep watch around the house.
In the end, he had the housekeeper confirm what Zhou You was doing in the bedroom and send him photos and videos. Only then did he finally relax a little.
Xing Hui saved them with a cold expression and only then did he start discussing proper business with Yu Jiming.
The housekeeper had taken the photos and videos after asking for Zhou You’s permission, openly and aboveboard.
After receiving Xing Hui’s message, he even showed the chat screen to Zhou You.
Zhou You turned his face away. “Uncle Liao, I’m tired. You can go out now.”
Liao An had no choice but to take his phone back. “Alright. Please rest. Call me if you need anything.”
Zhou You stayed in the bedroom playing with Junjun the dog. When Xing Hui was around, dogs were not allowed into their bedroom but Zhou You was soft hearted. As soon as Junjun whimpered a couple of times, he let it in.
Junjun was very intelligent and understood human speech. After entering the bedroom, it behaved extremely well, no chewing things, no messing around and it never climbed onto the bed. It simply lay obediently by Zhou You’s feet, quietly keeping him company.
At some point, Zhou You lowered his head to look at the little white fluffball, his heart softening. He bent down and picked it up, letting Junjun sit on his lap.
Junjun twitched its small ears, lifted its little head and stared at Zhou You with a pair of round, glistening dog eyes, utterly entranced.
Being looked at like that made Zhou You’s heart soften even more. He stroked its fluffy little head, met Junjun’s gaze and for some reason, inexplicably thought of the way Xing Hui looked at him.
Then, he fell into a daze.
It wasn’t until Junjun licked the wedding ring on his finger that Zhou You snapped back to his senses. He gently tapped Junjun on the head and said, “No licking.”
Junjun stopped licking, lifted its head again and looked at him with bright eyes.
Zhou You chuckled and muttered, “You really are just like him.”
As the sun was about to set, Zhou You took Junjun to the vegetable garden. This place had originally been a flower garden. He had casually remarked once that with so much land, it would be great to grow vegetables, grains and fruit instead. After that, Xing Hui had people uproot all the flowers.
Zhou You planted many kinds of vegetables, eggplants, chilies, green beans, cucumbers, loofah, as well as wheat, corn and potatoes. There were fruit trees too: apples, peaches, blueberries, strawberries and more.
The vegetable garden was quite large. Xing Hui even had someone set it up with full mechanization, hired workers and in the early days, even invited professors and students from an agricultural university to guide Zhou You.
This vast vegetable garden was the place that felt the most similar to Zhou You’s original world and it often reminded him of his mother.
Junjun was taken away by the servants to be fed. Zhou You felt like eating something sour, so the kitchen prepared several sour flavored dishes for dinner.
Zhou You ate with a decent appetite. His meals also had to be reported to Xing Hui. The housekeeper had asked for Zhou You’s permission about this as well, so the photos were taken openly.
In truth, Zhou You deeply disliked this aspect of Xing Hui, sending people to watch him, all the photographing, filming and surveillance but he also knew that even if he refused, his photos and videos would still end up on Xing Hui’s phone.
The northern front’s several small independent states had been extremely arrogant, repeatedly provoking trouble and even injuring nearby civilians. Xing Hui sat in the high chair of the command center’s main conference room. Already in a foul mood from arguing with Zhou You, his face was dark and no one in the entire room dared to breathe loudly.
The original plan had been to take things slowly, start with intimidation, then bring them to the negotiating table but now, it seemed unnecessary. They had to fight fast and decisively.
What’s more, with the thought of his spouse wanting to leave him, Xing Hui didn’t want to delay even a single day. He issued the order directly, just one word: fight.
Of course, hitting his spouse was absolutely out of the question. His Zhou You responded to gentleness, not force. Xing Hui even considered whether he should shoot himself once, go back injured and play pitifully.
The moment he voiced this terrible idea, both Yu Jiming and Qi Huai unanimously agreed that Xing Hui had gone insane.
“You might as well stab yourself at the front door,” Yu Jiming said. “Rush inside before the blood dries. Your Zhou You will definitely soften.”
Qi Huai nodded in agreement. “That’s a good idea. Zhou You is a doctor, he’ll personally bandage you. What’s originally two points of pain, you act like ten.”
Xing Hui shot them both a glare. After a moment of silence, he said dejectedly, “He’s been ignoring me these past few days.” There was an unmistakable grievance in his tone. “I really don’t have any way to deal with him.”
It had been nearly half a month since he came here and Zhou You had been in a cold war with him the entire time, of course, a one sided one. Xing Hui’s calls and messages never stopped but Zhou You didn’t reply to a single one.
Faced with Zhou You like this, what could Xing Hui do? At most, he could only throw out harsh words. If he were truly asked to lay a hand on Zhou You, he honestly couldn’t bring himself to do it.
The desperate, life and death state Zhou You had been in during the first two years still haunted Xing Hui whenever he thought about it. That man, once he truly made up his mind, was capable of self harm without hesitation.
Xing Hui sat there, his mind filled entirely with Zhou You.
Although he wished he could fly back immediately, war was no child’s play. His spouse was important but so were the country and its people.
During this period, Xing Hui was suffering terribly.
If not for the housekeeper’s regular daily reports and the surveillance feeds, Xing Hui truly wouldn’t have been able to stay there for even a second.
The provocations from the small independent states were nothing but asking for a beating. Once real force was applied, they immediately behaved themselves.
As soon as the fighting subsided, Xing Hui flew back to the capital. After getting off the plane, he didn’t even have time to change out of his military uniform. Wearing his leather boots, he rushed straight home. The moment he stepped inside, his eyes saw nothing else, he only looked for Zhou You.
He searched everywhere and couldn’t find him, so he asked the housekeeper, “Where’s my wife?”
His return had been sudden and Liao An had no choice but to answer honestly. “He went out to walk the dog.”
The moment he heard this, Xing Hui’s expression instantly darkened.
