They discovered the hidden entrance the following week, after days of careful, methodical searching — a heavy slab of ancient stone set into the ground near the temple’s foundation, which finally, after hours of painstaking work with makeshift tools, gave way to reveal a set of narrow, worn stairs descending into a darkness that neither of them had genuinely expected to find beneath a structure they’d both explored so thoroughly already.

“This entire chamber shouldn’t exist,” Aanya whispered, her trained archaeologist’s professional curiosity fighting visibly against every reasonable survival instinct currently screaming at her to turn around immediately and run.

“There is absolutely no record of any underground chamber beneath this specific temple, anywhere in my family’s archive.Full novel: When the Temple Bell Rings — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Not in a hundred and fifty years of continuous, careful documentation.” “Maybe,” Vihaan said, already beginning his careful descent down the narrow, uneven steps, “it was never actually meant to be found by anyone at all.” The chamber waiting for them below was small and perfectly circular, its curved stone walls densely carved with the same intricate symbols he’d first encountered in his grandfather’s notebook — all nine bells depicted together, arranged in a precise, deliberate pattern that made Vihaan’s head ache faintly whenever he tried to look at it directly for too long.

At the room’s exact center, resting on a low stone pedestal, sat a bell considerably smaller than the massive one hanging above in the temple proper — dark iron gone completely black with tremendous age, yet strangely, disturbingly untouched by even a single speck of the dust that should logically have accumulated over decades in a sealed, forgotten chamber like this one.

“Don’t,” Aanya started to say, already sensing exactly what he was about to do.

Vihaan reached out and touched it anyway — not with any real deliberation or conscious intention, but simply through the careless, almost involuntary brush of curious fingers against an ancient object that had apparently been waiting, with infinite patience, for precisely this single moment to finally arrive.

The bell rang.

A single note, low and seemingly endless, and the entire mountain itself seemed to shudder in immediate, powerful response — a genuine tremor rolling outward through solid stone and deep tree roots and the distant flowing river alike, dogs beginning to howl in unison somewhere across the sleeping valley, and every single temple bell in every surrounding village for miles suddenly, impossibly, beginning to ring out in perfect, unified answer.

Aanya grabbed his hand firmly and pulled him back up the narrow stairs into the cold night air outside, both of them breathless and shaken, the powerful tremor already beginning to fade steadily away beneath their feet even as they emerged.

Above them, for just one suspended, impossible moment, the night sky stretching over Lohaghat looked exactly, precisely like the sky from a forest scene three full months in the future — dark, heavy with unshed rain, and patiently, silently waiting.
