Dorian stared at the screen, his mind racing through every possibility, while Brielle leaned closer, studying the details with the same quiet concentration she had displayed throughout the investigation.
The account had been dormant for years, yet someone had attempted to move funds through it tonight.
It was too deliberate to be a coincidence.
“Can you trace where the request came from?” Brielle asked.
Dorian shook his head.
“Not yet.
The system only recorded the transaction attempt.
Whoever initiated it knew how to keep their trail clean.” Brielle frowned.
“Then we need to find another way.” Dorian looked at her for a moment before turning back to the screen.
“We’ll look at the account history.” They spent the next several minutes going through the dormant account, examining every transaction they could recover.
Most of the records were old and unremarkable, but Brielle soon noticed something unusual.
“Wait.” Dorian stopped scrolling.
“What?” She pointed at the screen.
“Look at those dates.” He leaned closer.
Several years apart, there were small transactions made within the same narrow period of the month.
None were large enough to attract immediate attention, but they appeared with an unsettling regularity.
“They’re testing the account,” Brielle said.
Dorian’s expression changed.
“Why would anyone test a dormant account?” “To see whether it can still be accessed.” The realization settled heavily between them.Someone wasn’t simply stealing from Wolfe Enterprises. They were checking which doors were still open.Dorian reached for his phone.
“We need to secure every dormant account before—” His phone began to ring.He glanced at the screen.Mr.
Smith.His hand stopped.
Brielle noticed immediately.
“Mr.
Smith?” Dorian nodded.
She looked at the phone, then back at him.
“Why is he calling?” Dorian didn’t answer.
“He said he wouldn’t contact you until the three days were over,” Brielle continued, her brow furrowing.
“Didn’t he?” “He did.” The phone continued ringing between them. For a moment, neither of them moved.Brielle looked at Dorian.
“Then why would he call now?” “I don’t know.” Dorian stared at the screen, equally puzzled.
Smith had been very clear when they last spoke.
He had agreed to stay out of the investigation until the deadline had passed, giving Dorian the space to handle the situation without outside interference. The fact that he was calling now could only mean something had changed.
Brielle folded her arms.
“Do you think something happened?” “I don’t know.” “Then answer it.” Dorian hesitated for another second before finally accepting the call.
“Mr.
Smith?” “Dorian.” Smith’s voice sounded unusually tense.
“I know what I said.
I told you I wouldn’t call until the three days were over.” Dorian straightened.
“Then why are you calling?” There was a brief silence on the other end.
“Because I wouldn’t be calling now if it wasn’t necessary.” Brielle watched Dorian closely, her expression becoming more serious.Smith continued, his voice firmer this time.
“Someone has been asking questions.” “What kind of questions?” “About Wolfe Enterprises.
About the investigation.
About who is involved.” Dorian’s face hardened.
“Who?” “I don’t know.” “Then how do you know this person is connected to us?” “Because they weren’t asking general questions, Dorian.
They were specific.” Smith paused.
“They wanted to know what had happened during my visit.
They asked about the situation at the company and, more importantly, about the people helping you.” Dorian’s eyes shifted toward Brielle.
“What exactly did they ask about the people helping me?” Smith hesitated.
“They asked about your wife.” Brielle’s expression changed slightly.Dorian’s voice became colder.
“What did they want to know about her?” “I couldn’t tell you exactly what their intentions are, but they were interested in her involvement.
They wanted to know how much she knew and how closely she was working with you.” Dorian tightened his grip on the phone.
Smith’s voice lowered.
“That’s why I’m calling.
I know I promised to stay out of this until the deadline, but I couldn’t ignore that.” Dorian remained silent.
“I thought you needed to know,” Smith added.
“If they were asking about the company alone, I would have kept my word.
But the moment they started asking about you and Brielle, I knew waiting three days wasn’t an option anymore.” Dorian glanced at Brielle again.
“Did you recognize the person?” “No.” “Did they say who sent them?” “No.
And before you ask, I didn’t give them anything.” “Good.” Smith exhaled.
“I won’t keep you.
Just be careful.
Whoever this is, they seem to know more than they should.” The call ended.
Dorian slowly lowered the phone.
Brielle studied him.
“What did he say?” Dorian looked at her.
“Someone has been asking questions.” “About the company?” “About the investigation.” He paused.
“And about you.” Brielle’s expression hardened.
“Me?” Dorian nodded.
For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then Brielle quietly said, “We need to be more careful.” They gathered the documents they had been reviewing, and Dorian shut down the system.
Neither of them needed to say what they were both thinking. They were being watched. As they walked toward the exit, Dorian noticed Brielle struggling slightly with the stack of documents in her hands.
“Give me those.” She looked at him.
“I can carry them.” “I know.” He took half of the documents anyway.Brielle gave him a brief, puzzled look but said nothing and continued walking.Dorian didn’t explain himself. He wasn’t even sure he could. They had known each other for only a few days.
She was still, in many ways, a stranger.
Yet the thought of someone deliberately asking questions about her left an uneasiness in him that he couldn’t quite dismiss. They reached the entrance of the building shortly after.
The corridors behind them had fallen silent.
Most of the employees had already gone home, leaving the usually crowded building strangely empty.Brielle stepped outside first.Dorian followed. They had barely taken a few steps when a voice called out behind them.
“Dorian.” Both of them stopped.Brielle turned first.Dorian turned with her.And the moment they saw who was standing behind them, they both froze. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. The person standing there was the last person either of them expected to see.
