The silver ring haunted Ariana’s thoughts.

It couldn’t be a coincidence.

The initials matched.

The timing matched.

And now he was requesting access to the university’s restricted robotics files.

As Team Seven walked back toward the engineering building, no one spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Noah broke the silence.

“So…”

“Are we saying Dr.

Bennett is our mystery villain now?”

Professor Hayes, who had just arrived after receiving Ethan’s text, shook her head.

“Not yet.”

Everyone looked at her.

“A clue is not proof.”

“We cannot accuse someone based on initials alone.”

Ethan nodded in agreement.

“She’s right.”

“If Daniel was trying to protect his team, we shouldn’t repeat the mistakes made during his investigation.”

Ariana smiled slightly.

“Then we keep searching.”

Professor Hayes looked proudly at her students.

“Exactly.”

The next morning, Northfield University buzzed with excitement.

Colorful banners decorated the campus.

Students hurried between classrooms carrying posters and project models.

The annual Innovation Showcase was only one week away.

Teams from every department were making final preparations.

Professor Hayes clapped her hands to gather Team Seven.

“Good news.”

“Our project has officially qualified for the final exhibition.”

Noah jumped from his chair.

“Yes!”

He spun around dramatically before pretending to bow.

“I’d like to thank my amazing teammates, my laptop, and instant noodles.”

Claire rolled her eyes.

“You forgot to thank sleep.”

“I sacrificed that.”

Even Ethan laughed.

For a little while, the mystery faded into the background.

They were students again.

Friends working toward the same dream.

After lunch, Ariana and Ethan stayed behind to fine-tune the robot’s arm movement.

The workshop was peaceful.

Sunlight streamed through the windows, warming the room.

Ariana carefully adjusted one of the servo motors.

“It keeps stopping halfway.”

Ethan crouched beside her.

“Maybe the calibration is off.”

He reached toward the control panel at the same time Ariana reached for a screwdriver.

Their hands brushed.

Both froze.

“Oh…”

Ariana quickly pulled her hand back.

“Sorry.”

Ethan smiled softly.

“No, that was my fault.”

An awkward silence followed.

Then Noah suddenly burst through the door carrying three sandwiches.

“There you are!”

He looked between them.

“You two look like I interrupted something.”

“We were fixing the robot,” Ariana answered quickly.

Noah grinned.

“Of course you were.”

Claire walked in behind him, shaking her head.

“One day you’ll learn to mind your own business.”

“That sounds boring.”

That evening, Professor Hayes called an unexpected meeting.

She placed several official documents on the table.

“I received permission.”

Everyone leaned forward.

“Permission for what?”

“Tomorrow morning…”

“…we’ll enter Sublevel B.”

The room became completely silent.

Noah blinked twice.

“The hidden underground laboratory?”

Professor Hayes nodded.

“The university agreed under one condition.”

“No wandering away from the group.”

“And everything we find belongs to the university.”

Ethan smiled for the first time that day.

“We’re finally going.”

That night…

Sleep refused to come easily.

Ariana lay awake in her dorm room, staring at the ceiling.

Everything had changed so quickly.

When she first arrived at Northfield University, her biggest worry had been making friends.

Now…

She was preparing to enter a secret underground laboratory connected to a mystery that had remained unsolved for years.

Her phone buzzed softly.

Ethan:

“Still awake?”

She smiled.

Ariana:

“Couldn’t sleep.”

Almost immediately—

Ethan:

“Me neither.”

Ariana hesitated before typing again.

Ariana:

“Are you nervous?”

Three dots appeared.

Then—

Ethan:

“A little.”

“Tomorrow might finally tell me what really happened to my brother.”

She stared at the message for several seconds.

Then she replied.

“Whatever happens tomorrow…”

“You won’t face it alone.”

A few moments passed.

Then Ethan answered.

“Thank you, Ariana.”

She smiled without realizing it.

Across campus, Ethan looked at the same conversation.

For the first time since Daniel had disappeared from his life…

He felt that hope outweighed fear.

The following morning…

Team Seven gathered outside the Medical Research Center at exactly eight o’clock.

The building towered above them, its glass walls reflecting the bright morning sun.

Professor Hayes greeted them with a serious expression.

“The Dean approved only one hour.”

“We use it wisely.”

A university security officer escorted them through the building.

They passed modern laboratories, research offices, and restricted hallways before stopping at a heavy steel door.

A keypad glowed beside it.

Above the entrance was a faded warning sign.

AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY

The officer entered a security code.

The massive door slowly opened.

Cold air drifted out from the darkness beyond.

“This leads to Sublevel B,” he explained.

“I’ll wait here.”

“If you need anything, call immediately.”

Professor Hayes nodded.

“Thank you.”

The elevator inside looked old compared to the rest of the building.

Its walls were made of brushed steel.

The floor vibrated slightly as everyone stepped inside.

Noah looked around nervously.

“I suddenly miss sunlight.”

The elevator doors closed.

A mechanical voice echoed.

Descending.

Floor numbers appeared one by one.

B1…

B2…

Then…

A screen flashed a level that didn’t exist on any public campus map.

SUBLEVEL B

The doors opened with a soft hiss.

A long corridor stretched into the darkness.

Unlike the abandoned clock tower laboratory, this place still had electricity.

Dim white lights illuminated the walls.

The air smelled surprisingly clean.

“It doesn’t look abandoned,” Ariana whispered.

“It isn’t,” Professor Hayes replied.

Fresh footprints marked the polished floor.

The dust was gone.

The lights worked.

And somewhere in the distance…

Machines hummed quietly.

Ethan looked around cautiously.

“Someone’s been here recently.”

Professor Hayes nodded.

“Stay together.”

They followed the corridor until they reached a large reinforced door.

A metal plaque beside it read:

MEDICAL ROBOTICS RESEARCH DIVISION

The words sent a chill through Ariana.

Medical robotics.

Exactly the field Daniel had dedicated his life to.

Professor Hayes slowly pushed the door open.

Inside was an enormous underground laboratory.

Rows of advanced robotic arms lined the walls.

Research computers blinked quietly.

Glass cases displayed robotic surgical instruments far more advanced than anything Team Seven had ever seen.

Everything looked…

Active.

As if researchers had simply stepped away for lunch.

Noah’s eyes widened.

“This technology…”

“It’s incredible.”

Professor Hayes looked equally stunned.

“This laboratory shouldn’t exist.”

Then Ariana noticed something on one of the desks.

A framed family photograph.

She picked it up.

It showed a younger Daniel Carter standing beside several researchers.

One of them was Professor Adrian Wells.

Another was Dr.

Samuel Bennett.

But there was one more face.

A woman wearing a white lab coat.

Professor Hayes gasped.

“No…”

Ethan looked at the photo.

“What is it?”

Professor Hayes pointed at the woman.

“That’s…”

“…your mother.”

Ethan froze.

“My…

mother?”

He stared at the photograph in disbelief.

“My parents told me she never worked here.”

Professor Hayes slowly shook her head.

“They weren’t telling you the whole truth.”

Silence filled the laboratory.

If Ethan’s mother had worked in this secret facility…

Then Daniel hadn’t stumbled into the mystery by accident.

His family had been connected to it from the very beginning.

Suddenly—

A loud alarm echoed throughout the underground laboratory.

ACCESS VIOLATION DETECTED.

Red emergency lights began flashing.

Everyone looked around in shock.

The laboratory doors slammed shut behind them.

A computerized voice repeated:

Security lockdown initiated.

Noah swallowed nervously.

“I have a really bad feeling about this.”

Across the room, one of the large monitors slowly turned on by itself.

Static flickered across the screen.

Then…

A familiar hooded figure appeared.

Their face remained hidden.

They looked directly into the camera.

“Welcome to Sublevel B,” the distorted voice said.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

The screen went black.

At that exact moment…

Heavy footsteps echoed from somewhere deep within the underground laboratory.

Someone else was there.

And this time…

They weren’t hiding anymore.
