The mechanical voice echoed through the underground laboratory again and again.

Ariana felt her heartbeat quicken.

The huge steel doors behind Team Seven refused to open.

Noah pulled on the emergency handle with all his strength.

Nothing.

“We’re locked in,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady.

Professor Hayes immediately took charge.

“Everyone stay calm.”

“We’ll find another exit.”

Ethan stepped beside Ariana.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded, even though her hands were trembling.

“I am now.”

He gave her a reassuring smile.

“We’ll get through this.”

The laboratory stretched farther than they had first realized.

Rows of robotic surgical arms stood silently under the flashing lights.

Glass display cases contained advanced medical equipment.

Large computer screens covered one entire wall.

Everything looked years ahead of the technology used in the university above.

Professor Hayes slowly walked toward one of the computers.

“It still has power.”

Noah joined her.

“So whoever’s been using this place…”

“…never really left.”

As Noah touched the keyboard, several monitors suddenly lit up.

Dozens of project folders appeared.

Each one carried a code name.

Project Aurora

Project Helios

Project Genesis

Ariana frowned.

“Genesis?”

Professor Hayes’ expression changed.

“I’ve heard that name before.”

“You have?” Ethan asked.

She nodded slowly.

“It was only a rumor.”

“A robotics project designed to assist surgeons during complex operations.”

Ariana’s eyes sparkled.

“A surgical robot…”

Professor Hayes smiled.

“One that could save thousands of lives.”

For a brief moment, Ariana forgot all about the danger surrounding them.

She imagined hospitals where robots could help doctors perform life-saving surgeries with incredible precision.

It was exactly why she had chosen engineering.

To create technology that could help people.

Ethan noticed the excitement in her eyes.

He smiled.

“You really love this, don’t you?”

She looked at him.

“I do.”

“More than anything.”

“And one day…”

“I want to design medical robots that doctors around the world can use.”

Ethan nodded.

“I believe you will.”

Their eyes met for a moment before Noah dramatically cleared his throat.

“Can we save the inspirational speeches until we’re not trapped underground?”

Everyone laughed.

Even in the middle of danger…

Noah somehow managed to lighten the mood.

Meanwhile…

Claire quietly wandered toward another section of the laboratory.

Old filing cabinets lined the walls.

One drawer had been left slightly open.

Curious, she pulled it open completely.

Inside were personnel files.

She carefully searched through them.

Then she froze.

One folder carried her father’s name.

Dr.

Min-Jun Kim

Her breathing became uneven.

“My dad…”

She opened the file.

Inside were research reports…

Security clearances…

And a resignation letter dated two years ago.

Your family will remain protected if you stay silent.

Claire’s hands began shaking.

“So that’s why…”

she whispered.

Her father had never explained why he had suddenly left medical research.

Now she knew.

Someone had forced him to disappear from the project.

Across the laboratory, Ethan examined another computer.

A hidden folder required fingerprint authorization.

“Noah?”

“I’m trying.”

Noah connected a portable device to the system.

“Give me a minute.”

The loading bar slowly climbed.

Ten percent.

Thirty percent.

Sixty percent.

Finally…

ACCESS GRANTED

The folder opened.

A single video file appeared.

The recording began automatically.

The screen showed the same laboratory they were standing in now.

But it looked completely different.

Bright.

Busy.

Filled with researchers.

Daniel Carter stood beside Professor Adrian Wells, presenting Project Genesis.

Applause filled the room.

Then another researcher entered.

Dr.

Samuel Bennett.

He congratulated Daniel with a handshake.

Everything seemed perfectly normal.

Until the video skipped ahead.

The laboratory was empty except for Daniel.

He looked directly into the camera.

“If someone finds this…”

“…it means they ignored my warning.”

Daniel sighed deeply.

“I trusted the wrong people.”

“I thought everyone wanted to improve medical technology.”

“I was wrong.”

He looked toward someone standing off-camera.

“I know you’re there.”

“Why are you doing this?”

A familiar voice answered.

“We’re protecting the future.”

The speaker still couldn’t be seen.

Only their shadow appeared on the floor.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“You’re protecting your profits.”

The recording suddenly ended.

Silence filled the room.

Professor Hayes slowly removed her glasses.

“So…”

“The research really was stolen.”

Suddenly—

A loud metallic clang echoed through the laboratory.

Everyone turned.

The farthest door slowly opened.

Footsteps echoed closer.

One…

Two…

Three…

A figure wearing the familiar black hoodie stepped into the light.

Noah instinctively stepped in front of Claire.

Ethan moved protectively beside Ariana.

Professor Hayes stood firm.

“This ends today.”

The hooded figure chuckled softly.

“Does it?”

For the first time…

Instead of running away…

The stranger slowly reached up.

Their hands grasped the hood.

Everyone watched in complete silence.

The hood fell back.

A young man, probably in his mid-twenties, stood before them.

He had tired eyes, messy black hair, and a faint scar across his left eyebrow.

“I know you…”

The young man smiled sadly.

“My name is Ryan Lee.”

Professor Hayes gasped.

“The vice captain of the original Robotics Club.”

Ryan nodded.

“I wondered how long it would take before someone remembered.”

Ariana looked confused.

“You’re not the one who sabotaged the competition?”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

“I’ve been trying to uncover the real culprit for two years.”

Everyone stood frozen.

“What?” Noah asked.

Ryan sighed.

“Every warning…”

“Every chess piece…”

“Every clue…”

“I left them for you.”

Claire frowned.

“You’ve been following us.”

“To keep you alive.”

Ryan looked directly at Ethan.

“Your brother asked me to.”

Silence.

Ethan could barely speak.

“You…

knew Daniel?”

Ryan smiled faintly.

“He was my best friend.”

“He knew someone inside the university was stealing our medical robotics research.”

“He asked me to disappear if anything happened.”

“And wait…”

“…until someone trustworthy continued his investigation.”

Professor Hayes lowered her head.

“So you’ve been hiding all this time.”

Ryan nodded.

“Because the people responsible still have influence.”

“They’re watching everything.”

Ariana took a careful step forward.

“If you’re trying to help us…”

“…then who is the real enemy?”

Ryan’s expression became serious.

“You’ve been asking the wrong question.”

He looked toward Ethan.

“The real enemy…”

“…isn’t one person.”

“It’s an organization.”

Before anyone could ask another question—

The laboratory lights suddenly shut off.

Complete darkness swallowed the room.

Ariana instinctively reached for Ethan’s hand.

He squeezed it tightly.

Then—

BANG!

A gunshot-like sound echoed through the laboratory.

Glass shattered.

Emergency lights flickered back on.

Ryan staggered backward.

A deep cut ran across his shoulder where a metal pipe had crashed down from the ceiling.

“Ryan!” Ariana shouted.

“I’m okay,” he gritted through clenched teeth.

Above them, on the second-floor observation balcony, several shadowy figures stood watching.

None of their faces were visible.

One of them spoke through a voice changer.

“You’ve already learned too much.”

Another added,

“Project Genesis belongs to us.”

The shadows disappeared almost instantly.

Ryan looked up with determination.

“They’re here.”

Professor Hayes turned toward Team Seven.

“We’re leaving.”

“Now.”

As they hurried toward the emergency exit Ryan pointed out, Ethan looked back one last time.

One of the shadowy figures remained standing on the balcony.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the figure slowly placed a white bishop chess piece on the railing before vanishing into the darkness.

The chessboard was filling.

The players were finally revealing themselves.

And Team Seven had just discovered that the mystery surrounding Daniel Carter was far bigger than any of them had imagined.
