Ye Anran had already been placed inside the room by Old Madam Ye. By the time the old lady went to the main hall, Ye Anran was left alone.
She scooped some spirit spring water from the space and gulped it down.
Since her new body was so frail, she needed plenty of this water to restore her strength.
Not far away, the wolves twitched their noses, their eyes gleaming menacingly.
The last wolf in the group was clearly larger than the others. Its gaze locked on the Ye family home, and it let out several howls directed at the other wolves.
The pack began to fiercely attack the wild boars.
The villagers, seeing that the wolves weren’t paying attention to them, cautiously stepped back.
One wild boar alone might have been manageable—but with so many wolves behind it, even armed villagers would stand no chance.
The largest wolf at the back seemed to be the alpha. While wolves were common in the deep mountains, few villagers had ever encountered them in such numbers.
If more wolves were lurking behind, the entire village could be slaughtered.
After drinking the water, Ye Anran felt renewed strength surging through her body. She glanced around the Ye household.
Though the family was poor, with the money-making methods stored in her mind, she thought, If I can’t make it in ancient times now, then my whole life has been wasted.
Ye Anran opened the door and stepped out. In the main hall, Old Madam Ye and Ye Dahe were chatting.
Seeing her, Old Madam Ye waved.
“Little one, your body is too weak. Go back and rest a few more days—you’ll feel better soon.”
Ye Anran shook her head. “Grandmother, I’m fine. Don’t believe me? Watch.”
She bounced lightly in front of her grandmother. Old Madam Ye, full of concern, scooped her up in her arms.
“Good, good. As long as you’re well, that’s all that matters.”
Ye Dahe laughed. “Mother, you don’t even treat your grandsons this well. Luckily, the mischievous kids didn’t see this, or they’d be jealous!”
He thought of Ye Qing’an, the youngest of the children, always clingy to their mother. If he knew that his mother had picked up a little girl from outside, cooing and calling her ‘good girl,’ he would probably be green with envy.
Ye Dahe turned to Old Madam Ye. “Mother, Ye Qing’an is in the room. How will you explain this to him?”
Old Madam Ye lifted her head proudly. “If Qing’an knew the little girl who saved his life is now his sister, he’d be overjoyed!”
Outside, the wolves launched a coordinated attack on the wild boars. The boars fought back fiercely.
The alpha wolf struck the wild boar from behind, but the boar rammed its head heavily into the wolf.
The alpha’s front leg immediately bled from a deep gash. Yet the rest of the pack didn’t give the boar a moment’s rest.
Despite the boar’s strength, the sheer number of wolves tore it down swiftly, breaking its neck.
The alpha wolf didn’t bother with the fallen boar. Its nose twitched, and it turned toward the Ye household.
Ye Old Master and Ye Sanlang had already rushed inside. As they tried to close the door, the alpha rammed against it.
Ye Old Master hastily moved objects in front of the door—but it was no match.
The alpha wolf pushed open the Ye family’s main gate. A few daring villagers, still outside, peeked from afar with the village head.
The village head pounded his thigh. “What do we do now? The Ye household is the first to be attacked!”
The men outside trembled in fear, none daring to step forward. One wolf might have been fine—but so many?
Ye Old Master shielded his family, while the other branches of the household, hearing the commotion, also came out.
Old Madam Ye held Ye Anran close, trembling all over.
Ye Anran’s eyes widened as she saw the wolves.
She had just crossed over! Normally, one would become a princess or a little noble lady—but her life? It was “face-to-death” from the start.
She tried to use her powers—but nothing happened. Perhaps her abilities hadn’t manifested yet, or maybe the new body had none. But that couldn’t be—her space had carried over.
Confused, she could only think: I’m doomed. Her tiny body was no match for wolves.
At that moment, a cute little voice suddenly appeared in her mind. She saw the alpha wolf in front, howling.
“You fools, do not harm Xiangxiang Baobei! If you hurt Xiangxiang Baobei, none of you will survive!”
The other wolves howled in response: “We won’t harm Xiangxiang Baobei!”
Ye Anran’s eyes went wide. What? She could understand the wolves’ conversation?
She tugged at Old Madam Ye’s sleeve.
“Grandmother, did you hear someone speaking?”
Old Madam Ye, panicking, shook her head. “No one’s talking, little one. Don’t make a sound. Your father and grandfather, and all the men in the village—they’ll handle the wolves. You must stay quiet.”
She looked at the daughters-in-law by the door and subtly waved them back.
Understanding, the women quietly retreated into the rooms and closed the doors.
The children inside were instructed to stay silent. The women knew their priority was to protect the children.
With the men outside, if things went badly, it would be a matter of life and death.
Each household retreated, hiding their children under beds. They even pushed cabinets in front of the doors to barricade them.
Wang Xiang’er locked Ye Qing’an inside a cabinet and pushed the heavy bed against the door as well.
She felt uneasy. Her newly recovered daughter was still with Old Madam Ye! She wished she could have brought her into the room sooner.
She dared not step outside to interfere. Meanwhile, Second Wife Liu Xiuxiu complained.
“Hmph! That useless girl comes back and brings wolves into our home. I bet she’s a jinx. No wonder everyone dislikes her. Even the eldest daughter isn’t this troublesome. So it turns out the second daughter is a curse.”
Ye Dahe hurriedly covered Liu Xiuxiu’s mouth.
“Shut up! Do you know what’s happening outside? Do you want to shout and attract the wolves inside, so they eat you?”
Liu Xiuxiu realized her mistake and immediately covered her mouth.
