Everyone in the bar was staring at him.
Shen Ke snapped out of his daze, then jumped up, shouting in excitement, “Ha.. hahaha! One shot, two balls?! Jiu-ge, you’re really the best!! Hahaha! Hey, Luo Yi, hurry up and draw your slip!”
The short guy finally came back to his senses too. “H–holy crap!”
The eleven and the thirteen… Lu Jiu didn’t do that on purpose, right? Right? They just happened to be the easiest ones to hit, right?
But when he recalled Lu Jiu’s stroke just now, a chill went down his spine. There was no way those balls had been easy shots, Luo Yi couldn’t have done it, none of them could have!
Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye froze. They had never expected Lu Jiu to open the game with such a beautiful, ruthless strike.
“Hey, Luo Yi, what, can’t handle it?” Shen Ke planted both hands on his hips, full of mock swagger.
Luo Yi’s mouth twitched. He forced out a smile. “…Who are you saying can’t handle it?”
With a stiff face, he walked over, stuck his hand into the box, and drew out a slip: Kiss someone here on the spot.
…Disgusting, sure, but at least it was a common enough punishment in these games, nothing too outrageous.
He clenched the slip tight in his fist.
Ding Jiaye licked his lips, his gaze slithering across Lu Jiu’s face like a snake.
He walked over as well, pulled out his slip: Give someone a kiss.
He immediately calmed down, his greasy grin returning as he glanced at Lu Jiu, “We can pick from the other team too, right?”
Shen Ke’s grin vanished in an instant,“What do you mean by that?!”
Just then, Lu Jiu strolled to the far corner, leaned down again, and lined up another shot.
Before anyone could even react, he struck, again, two balls dropped in one stroke. The ten and the fourteen rolled straight into opposite pockets.
Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye’s expressions collapsed completely. Those two numbers just happened to be the other slips they were holding!
In only two turns, Lu Jiu had cleared all of their numbers?!
The bar erupted. Screams and cheers filled the room. Even the people who normally didn’t get along with Lu Jiu were all boiling with excitement now!
Was this something an amateur could do?!
Even if those four balls had coincidentally lined up just right, to seize the opportunity with such precision, how many people could actually pull that off? And Lu Jiu had done it with ease, like it was nothing.
From the moment he had walked in tonight, many people had felt something different about him.
But only now did they fully realize! This Lu Jiu was no longer the same as he had been the past three years.
The youth stood calm and collected, his lips carrying a playful smile. He wasn’t the one who flew into senseless rages, losing control at the slightest spark. He wasn’t that Lu Jiu anymore.
“Ge, ge!” Shen Ke was so excited he nearly knelt down. “You really are my Jiu-ge!”
Lu Jiu gave him a sidelong, lazy glance.
The truth was, this world’s version of him hadn’t played billiards much, his technique was still a little green.
But his experience was rich. In his past twenty-five years, he’d spent countless nights gambling and playing with rowdy friends.
He could even confidently say he was good enough to go head-to-head with pros.
As he polished his cue, the crowd began chanting for Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye.
“Draw! Draw! Draw! Draw!”
Luo Yi’s face was rigid, his mask about to crack. He stiffly reached into the box again and pulled out another slip.
“What is it?”
Someone leaned over, then burst into laughter, “Find a guy here and give him a… steamy, blow job style performance! Who the hell wrote this one?! Hahahaha!”
It was practically the same as Shen Ke’s earlier punishment.
Luo Yi’s face went dark as iron. This was definitely written by someone in his own group. He knew full well that Shen Ke’s team didn’t stoop that low.
Shen Ke was overjoyed. “Can’t take it, huh? Hahaha! Finally, one of your disgusting slips came back to bite you!”
The people in Luo Yi’s group looked awkward, but none of them dared admit it. Who would openly say they’d written that, just to give Luo Yi more reason to hate them?
Someone whispered a suggestion, “Didn’t we give Shen Ke an exception earlier? Maybe, Luo-ge, you could… talk to Lu Jiu too?”
Luo Yi crushed the slip in his fist. What? Beg Lu Jiu for mercy?! He’d rather die!
But Lu Jiu, who overheard, smiled easily. “Sure, I don’t mind.”
Luo Yi froze.
Ding Jiaye’s eyes flicked. He quickly reached in and drew his next slip, Strip completely and ran a lap around the bar.
Even with his thick skin, his face turned stiff at that one. He immediately jumped to beg: “Jiujiu, spare me, alright? Ding-ge was messing with you earlier, I’ll apologize!”
“Alright.” Lu Jiu grinned, nodding like it was nothing.
The entire crowd gaped.
Even Shen Ke almost exploded. He leaned in, whispering, “Jiu-ge, you’re just letting them off like that?”
After all the crap they’d pulled earlier, just letting them go free? Too easy!
But Lu Jiu tilted his head, relaxed as ever. He looked at Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye.
“Both of you drew kissing slips in the first round, didn’t you? Then don’t bother anyone else. Just kiss each other. Once you do that, the second-round punishments are void.”
The entire room went silent.
Even Shen Ke was stunned, his words cut off.
…Wait…. what? Make Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye kiss each other?
Everyone turned, staring at the frozen Luo Yi and the oddly intrigued Ding Jiaye.
Luo Yi’s face spasmed, his expression twisting violently. Kiss Ding Jiaye, the real gay?
His rage practically shot flames from his eyes.
The people nearby all shrank back, marveling silently. Lu Jiu was vicious.
Everyone knew Luo Yi despised Ding Jiaye. If not for wanting to disgust Lu Jiu, he wouldn’t even have brought Ding Jiaye tonight. He wouldn’t touch him otherwise.
And now he was being forced to kiss this weak, sleazy man…
“Lu Jiu, You!!”
But before he could finish his outburst, Lu Jiu was already lining up his next shot, voice casual, “If you can’t do it, then just follow what’s written on the slip.”
The words caught in Luo Yi’s throat. What, go find some guy and do that in front of everyone? He’d rather die.
He was about to lose it, when a finger poked his shoulder. Trembling with fury, he turned, only to see Ding Jiaye.
“Hey, Xiao Yi,” Ding Jiaye smiled, greasy as ever. “Why don’t we just get it over with, huh?”
Luo Yi stared. “What did you just call me?!”
Ding Jiaye’s smirk widened. “Xiao Yi. What, can’t I call you that? Don’t tell me you dislike Ding-ge that much?”
The crowd roared with laughter, chanting louder and louder.
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
Luo Yi nearly fainted from rage, staggering back a step in horror.
“Come on,” Ding Jiaye advanced, grinning.
Sure, he wanted Lu Jiu, but kissing Luo Yi? Better than stripping naked and streaking through the bar.
“Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!”
The atmosphere was deafening, pressing down from every direction.
At that moment, Luo Yi, shaking with fury, cast a glance at Lu Jiu, only to hate him more than ever.
Because Lu Jiu wasn’t even watching them. He was staring at the billiard table, cool and unconcerned, as though even if they bolted right now, the only thing he’d say was: “What a bore.”
The rage surged up in Luo Yi’s chest…
He clenched his jaw, frozen in place, until Ding Jiaye’s face loomed closer.
Luo Yi snapped his eyes shut, forcing himself through it. The instant lips touched, his entire body erupted in goosebumps, cold sweat breaking out down his back.
In the screams and cheers, he shoved Ding Jiaye away and doubled over against the table, gagging and retching.
Shen Ke was utterly dumbfounded.
He looked from the gagging Luo Yi, to the dissatisfied Ding Jiaye wiping his mouth, then to… Lu Jiu, calmly bending forward again to line up his next shot. Shen Ke swallowed hard.
…Damn. His Jiu ge really knew how to play.
Meanwhile, Lu Quning stood off to the side, stiff and awkward.
…He hadn’t expected Lu Jiu to treat him like thin air.
The bar buzzed with energy, but he felt like a useless extra.
When Luo Yi and Ding Jiaye kissed, someone even shoved him aside, complaining he was blocking the view.
He bit his lip, at a loss, then turned toward Ye Lin, muttering, “Let’s go?”
But Ye Lin didn’t respond.
He was staring at Lu Jiu.
Lu Quning’s face paled.
He tugged Ye Lin’s hand, calling softly, “A’Lin?”
Ye Lin finally glanced at him.
“Let’s go, alright?” Lu Quning forced a smile.
When Ye Lin’s gaze drifted back toward Lu Jiu, Lu Quning whispered quickly, “Brother won’t leave. Don’t call him, he’ll just get upset again. A’Lin, it’s too noisy here. Let’s go outside?”
The silence made Lu Quning uneasy.
Fortunately, at last, Ye Lin’s steps turned toward him.
…
No one in the bar noticed their departure.
On the terrace outside,
Ye Qin flicked his cigarette, chuckling. “That brat Jiu finally looks a bit like his old self again. I really thought something strange happened to him these past years. For a while I wondered if Old Man Lu had used some shady trick to mess with his son’s head.
“Though Lu Jiu and Lu Quning are both his sons… even if he favored one, would he really ruin his eldest like that? Doesn’t make sense. But what else could explain such a sudden change in temperament?
“No head injury, no fever. How does a man just wake up one day completely different, like his brain dropped to zero?”
He exhaled a laugh. “I even went to consult a few so called masters. Waste of time, obviously. Looking back, I was just being ridiculous.”
He grinned, relieved. “Anyway, it turns out he’s not an idiot after all.”
Suddenly he remembered something, turning to his friend with a laugh. “Oh right, didn’t even you go to a master back then…. ”
But his friend wasn’t listening.
The cigarette smoldered between long, bony fingers, smoke curling upward.
The man’s eyes were locked straight ahead, on the figure standing at the billiards table.
That tiny mole on the bridge of his nose caught the light, glinting faintly.
As he bent down, the line of his arm and back stretched taut, his slim waist outlined with sharp clarity, yet the strike carried sudden force.
The cue ball shot forward, clipped the nine, and sent it rolling cleanly into a nearby pocket.
“Wait! Lu Jiu’s not actually going to clear all of Luo Yi’s team’s balls, is he?”
“Shen Ke already knocked out the twelve earlier. That means Luo Yi’s group only has fifteen left!”
“Shit, why didn’t I start recording from the beginning?!”
Luo Yi’s breath grew ragged, his face pale.
Sweat trickled down his forehead as he stared at Lu Jiu, as if sheer willpower could stop him.
Shen Ke was bouncing around like a monkey, too hyped to stay still. He had never imagined his Jiu-ge could be this badass!
If Jiu-ge pocketed the fifteen, Luo Yi wouldn’t even get another turn and that disgusting punishment slip wouldn’t matter anymore!
“Go Jiu ge! You’ve got this!” He was ready to wave banners and scream himself hoarse.
All eyes in the room were fixed firmly on the young man.
His steps remained calm, his expression as if he were merely playing an ordinary game. He moved to the other side of the billiard table, bent forward slightly.
Luo Yi felt as though his very breath had stopped. Under the blinding lights, he barely noticed the pain of his fingernails digging into his palms.
Lu Jiu’s gaze was steady and unwavering, fixed with full concentration on the tip of the cue stick.
Then strike.
The cue ball collided with another, which rolled straight ahead, grazing the fifteen ball. After a winding and complex trajectory, the fifteen ball dropped neatly into the pocket.
He had cleared it. He had actually cleared Luo Yi’s team’s balls completely!!
Cheers erupted like a boiling wave. Luo Yi’s hands trembled uncontrollably.
His mental state had collapsed.
“Lu Jiu, you…”
“Hm?”
The young man lifted his eyes in mild confusion, and Luo Yi’s words stuck in his throat.
What was going on with him? Why was he so calm? Had he… had he really come back?
But Luo Yi didn’t dare to ask. Even if this was the question burning in everyone’s hearts, he would never be the fool to voice it aloud.
“Come back”? Where could Lu Jiu possibly have gone before?
He’d always been here. He had never left.
“Now only the eight ball is left,” Shen Ke reminded. “Once it’s pocketed, that means complete victory. But… we didn’t set any stakes, and according to the rule, whoever hits the eight ball has to take a punishment. Jiu ge, maybe we should just stop here?”
By their self-made rule, the winner wasn’t supposed to be punished seriously. It was just meant as a joke, a final flourish to end the game with some fun.
Normally the victor could first draw a slip of paper from the box; if the punishment sounded amusing, they’d go ahead, sink the eight ball, and wrap things up perfectly. If it was too much, the game could simply stop there.
After all, it was just a game, no one needed to take it so seriously.
Unfortunately, Lu Jiu always had to see things through to the end.
He never cared what obstacles stood in his way. If it was something he wanted, he would make sure it landed solidly in his hands.
“You go draw for me.” He jerked his chin at the lottery box, speaking to Shen Ke.
Shen Ke rubbed his nose awkwardly. “Jiu ge, you know I don’t have the best luck…”
“Go boldly.”
The easy tone in Lu Jiu’s voice gave Shen Ke confidence. Since they had already won the match, there was no burden on him. He cheerfully ran over, reached into the box, and pulled out a slip of paper.
When he saw the words, he let out a surprised “Huh?”
Luo Yi, who had been staring blankly, perked up at once. He leaned over, read it, and froze for a moment before letting out a laugh,
“‘Reenact what you did a month ago at the Ye family’s villa’?”
At those words, some people didn’t understand, while others instantly caught on, their gazes turning meaningful.
A month ago, at that Ye family party, plenty had gotten drunk.
And drunk people always stirred up trouble, some had even put on R-rated performances in front of the crowd.
A heated kiss was nothing; hands roaming all over each other was considered mild. Whoever had written this punishment certainly knew how to stir excitement.
“But Jiu ge left early that night. What’s there to reenact?” Shen Ke muttered, confused.
“Did he?” Luo Yi fixed his eyes on Lu Jiu. “Lu Jiu, you went upstairs that night, didn’t you? Where exactly did you go?”
“What’s that supposed to mean, Luo Yi? Are you interrogating Jiu-ge now?” Shen Ke bristled.
“I’m not interrogating,” Luo Yi said smoothly, “but I did hear later that the next morning, his neck was covered in hickeys. His brother saw it with his own eyes. Ding ge, didn’t Lu Quning go question you afterward?”
Ding Jiaye hadn’t expected himself to be dragged into this conversation.
He coughed. “Yeah, that night I made Jiu jie angry. When I saw him go upstairs, I followed to apologize.. ”
It was sickeningly fake. The truth was, he had been deliberately provoking Lu Jiu all evening. The more furious Lu Jiu became, the more excited he had felt.
Shen Ke’s heart dropped at those words. He hadn’t known Ding Jiaye had actually followed upstairs. Back then, when Jiu-ge stormed off, Shen Ke had tried to chase after him but was held back.
Later, when he managed to slip away, he had searched the upper floor and couldn’t find Jiu-ge anywhere. His messages went unanswered, so he assumed Jiu ge had left through the back door.
Now, hearing this… had Ding Jiaye followed right after him?
“And then?” someone asked curiously, “Did you actually find him? Those hickeys on Jiu ge’s neck, don’t tell us they were from you…”
Ding Jiaye scratched his nose. “Didn’t find him. What are you guys thinking? Jiu jie said himself, I smell like an old man? How could something like that happen? Why do you all keep poking at my sore spots?”
In front of Lu Jiu, he didn’t dare lie outright.
“So it wasn’t you, huh!”
“Then what happened with you that night, Lu Jiu?”
“Exactly, who left those hickeys?”
Amid the teasing voices, Lu Jiu’s expression remained unshaken.
Luo Yi secretly evaluated the situation. Honestly, he didn’t believe Lu Jiu would ever get involved with someone as disgusting as Ding Jiaye.
He even thought Lu Quning confronting Ding Jiaye afterward had been more about ulterior motives than genuine suspicion.
No one besides Lu Quning had ever claimed to have seen those so-called “hickeys.” Who knew if they were real? Perhaps Lu Quning had exaggerated.
But after losing so badly tonight, Luo Yi felt that if he could disgust Lu Jiu just a little, it would still count as a victory.
He sneered, “Lu Jiu, since you’ve won so beautifully tonight, why not be generous? Tell us, where did you go that night?”
For no reason, Shen Ke felt uneasy. It suddenly struck him: even if Jiu ge had left the villa quietly, he should have passed through their line of sight at some point.
But that night, before he had gone upstairs, Shen Ke hadn’t glimpsed Jiu ge again.
So where had he been?
Most people had fallen asleep downstairs, yes but later some had gone up as well. And they were very drunk. If Jiu ge had still been there, in a confused, unstable state…
No, no. Shen Ke bit down hard. “Maybe it was mosquito bites! The mosquitoes in that villa were brutal. One hovered around me forever! Who says they were hickeys?”
“Hahahaha, that’s possible!”
“My legs got covered in bites that night too.”
“If they were mosquito bites, then it doesn’t matter at all! Lu Jiu, why don’t you just finish with the eight ball?”
“But how would you ‘reenact’ mosquito bites? Maybe just draw another slip instead?”
Ding Jiaye chipped in slyly, “I can play the mosquito.”
“Shameless, Ding-ge!”
Ding Jiaye only grinned shamelessly.
Shen Ke swallowed nervously, edging closer to Lu Jiu. He whispered, “Jiu ge, maybe let’s just stop here? Don’t play along.”
But Lu Jiu gave the same languid reply as always, “Why not?”
He lifted the glass of alcohol that had been sitting for some time and raised it to his lips. Then his brow furrowed.
Why did it still smell disgusting?
But he had already lifted it, stopping midway would look bad. And even Lu Jiu still carried a shred of pride about appearances.
So he took a tiny sip without changing expression, then set it down as if nothing was wrong.
The next second, he bent down and struck.
Before anyone had registered it, the eight ball rolled straight into the pocket.
“Magnificent, Lu Jiu!”
“So, is the crazy mosquito ready to make its appearance?”
Amid the laughter, Lu Jiu straightened.
He let out a long, satisfied breath, then turned slightly to the side and crooked his slender finger toward someone.
That someone was on the balcony, Ye Qin and Bai Yun, standing alone.
No one understood the gesture. Even Ye Qin froze, pointing at himself in confusion. Him? Was Jiu calling him?
But the man beside him suddenly moved. He stubbed out his cigarette. Then stood tall, lifted his leg, and walked inside.
As the crowd rapidly hushed, the striking man stepped forward, closing the distance one measured step at a time, his eyes never leaving Lu Jiu.
There was a clear difference in their heights.
Lu Jiu leaned one hand casually against the edge of the table, standing lazily.
“You heard it.”
His eyes gleamed as he looked up at the man, voice edged with mockery.
As if the man hadn’t been watching him all night.
Lu Jiu lifted his right hand. The cue stick hooked around the man’s necklace chain. He gave it a sharp tug.
The man was forced to lower his head.
Their noses brushed. Their lips collided hard.
Bai Yun laughed.
