Kael did not finish the sentence.

He couldn’t.

The third moon had appeared where there had never been a moon before.Full novel: WOLVES OF THE BLOOD MOON — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

It hung beneath the broken remains of the other two, enormous and impossibly close, bathing the world in pale violet light.

And standing upon it— was Kael.

Not a reflection.

Not an illusion.

Not a memory.

Kael.

The same face.

The same golden eyes.

The same black hair.

The same scar above his eyebrow.

Even the same sword hung at his side.

But there was one difference.

The stranger was smiling.

Kael stared at him.

Mara tightened her grip around Kael’s hand.

“Who is that?”

Kael didn’t answer.

The First Mother did.

“Your first possibility.”

Kael looked at her.

“My what?”

The First Mother swallowed.

“Before you were born, there were countless versions of you.”

The stranger on the moon smiled.

“She means I was the first.”

Kael’s blood ran cold.

The stranger stepped off the moon.

He didn’t fall.

He walked down through the sky as though invisible stairs existed beneath his feet.

Every step created a ripple across reality.

When he reached the ground, he stood only a few meters away.

Kael raised his sword.

The stranger laughed.

“You always point that at me.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“We’ve met?”

“Many times.”

“When?”

The stranger smiled.

“Before you learned how to remember.”

The First Wolf stepped between them.

“Stay away from my son.”

The stranger looked at him.

Then laughed.

“Your son?”

He tilted his head.

“You still believe blood makes him yours?”

The First Wolf growled.

The stranger continued.

“I existed before you.”

The First Wolf’s eyes widened.

“Impossible.”

“Everything you call impossible is merely something you haven’t remembered.”

Kael stepped forward.

“Enough riddles.”

The stranger looked at him.

“You want to know who I am.”

“Yes.”

“Then ask the right question.”

Kael frowned.

“What are you?”

The stranger smiled.

“Wrong.”

“Who are you?”

“Still wrong.”

Kael’s patience disappeared.

“Then what should I ask?”

The stranger pointed toward Kael’s chest.

“Why do you exist?”

Silence.

Kael felt the First Heart pulse.

Once.

Twice.

The stranger whispered:

“That’s the question your mother was afraid you would ask.”

Kael turned toward the silver-haired woman.

“Is he telling the truth?”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

The truth came slowly.

Painfully.

Kael’s mother had not created him as a single being.

She had created thousands of possibilities.

Each one represented a different version of what the First Wolf could become.

One would become a king.

One would become a destroyer.

One would become a healer.

One would become a tyrant.

One would become a protector.

One would become a god.

And one— would become Kael.

The problem was that every possibility wanted to exist.

They fought.

They destroyed worlds.

They consumed one another.

Eventually, Kael’s mother made a decision.

She sealed all the possibilities into a single consciousness.

Kael.

But one possibility refused to disappear.

The first.

The strongest.

The one that believed it deserved to exist.

That possibility became the stranger standing before them.

“What is your name?” Kael asked.

The stranger smiled.

“I had many.”

“Give me one.”

“Call me Vale.”

Kael repeated it.

“Vale.”

Vale nodded.

“Good.”

Kael looked at him.

“Why have you come?”

Vale’s smile disappeared.

“To finish what you started.”

“What did I start?”

“The war.”

Kael frowned.

“I’ve been fighting to stop it.”

“No.”

Vale stepped closer.

“You’ve been fighting to win it.”

Kael shook his head.

“I don’t want a war.”

“Neither did your mother.”

Vale pointed toward the sky.

“Neither did Silence.”

Then toward the First Mother.

“Neither did she.”

Then toward the First Wolf.

“Neither did he.”

Finally, he pointed at Kael.

“But every one of you chose.”

Kael said nothing.

Vale smiled.

“And now your choices have created me.”

Mara stepped forward.

“Why do you look like him?”

Vale glanced at her.

“Because he is the version that survived.”

“Survived what?”

“Everything.”

Mara frowned.

Vale’s expression softened.

“The Kael you know is only one version.”

He looked at Kael.

“I am the Kael who never learned mercy.”

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I made different choices.”

Vale’s body began changing.

For a moment, Kael saw himself as a child.

Then a king.

Then a monster.

Then an old man.

Then a wolf.

Then a creature made entirely from light.

Finally, Vale returned to his original appearance.

“I remember every possible life.”

Kael stared.

“Every one?”

“Every death.”

“Every betrayal.”

“Every victory.”

“Every person you could have loved.”

Vale looked at Mara.

“And every person you could have lost.”

Mara stepped backward.

Kael moved in front of her.

Vale smiled.

“You always did that.”

“Did what?”

“Protect her.”

Kael frowned.

“How many versions of me loved her?”

Vale became quiet.

“More than you can imagine.”

Kael’s expression changed.

“And how many lost her?”

Vale looked away.

“All but one.”

Mara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Which one?”

Vale looked at her.

“This one.”

A roar shook the kingdom.

Everyone turned.

The eastern horizon had disappeared.

Not burned.

Not destroyed.

Gone.

A perfect black circle replaced it.

Kael felt the Second Heart respond.

“What is that?”

Vale looked toward it.

“The beginning of the end.”

The First Mother stepped forward.

“No.”

Vale nodded.

“Yes.”

She raised her hands.

“We sealed it.”

“You sealed a door.”

Vale pointed toward the black circle.

“But doors are meant to open.”

Kael looked at the First Mother.

“What did you seal?”

She hesitated.

“The First World.”

Kael frowned.

“What is the First World?”

“The world before this one.”

Kael stared.

“You mean…”

She nodded.

“Before our universe.”

Kael’s voice lowered.

“There was another?”

“Yes.”

“And what happened to it?”

The First Mother looked toward the darkness.

“We destroyed it.”

The silence that followed was absolute.

Kael turned to his mother.

“Why?”

She answered.

“Because it was dying.”

“How?”

“It had reached the end of every possible choice.”

Kael frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“No.”

Vale interrupted.

“That’s exactly what happens when possibility becomes exhausted.”

He looked at Kael.

“Every universe eventually reaches a point where nothing new can happen.”

Kael stared at him.

“And then?”

“It dies.”

The First Mother continued.

“We escaped.”

Kael looked horrified.

“You abandoned an entire universe.”

“We saved this one.”

“By sealing the old one?”

“Yes.”

Vale laughed.

“You didn’t seal it.”

The First Mother looked at him.

“You buried it.”

The black circle began expanding.

A sound came from within.

A heartbeat.

Slow.

Ancient.

Kael felt his own heart answer.

Boom.

Boom.

Boom.

The First Heart glowed.

The Second Heart glowed.

Then Vale’s eyes turned golden.

“It’s awake.”

Kael raised his sword.

“What is?”

Vale looked at him.

“The First World.”

The ground split.

Ancient creatures crawled from the cracks.

They resembled wolves, but their bodies were transparent.

Inside them burned dying stars.

Their mouths opened without making sound.

Mara transformed.

“How many?”

The First Wolf looked around.

“Millions.”

Lyra raised her hands.

Golden energy surrounded her.

“Then we fight.”

Kael nodded.

“Everyone!”

The kingdom’s armies gathered.

Wolves.

Humans.

Vampires.

Sorcerers.

Guardians.

Even creatures that had once been enemies stood together.

The battle began.

Kael flew into the first wave.

His sword cut through three creatures.

Another attacked from behind.

Mara destroyed it.

Lyra released a blast of golden fire.

Orion charged through the battlefield.

The First Wolf transformed completely.

He became enormous.

His howl shook the mountains.

The ancient creatures stopped.

For one second— they remembered fear.

Then they attacked again.

Kael landed beside Vale.

“Are you helping us?”

Vale shrugged.

“For now.”

“Why?”

“Because if the First World consumes this one, there won’t be anything left for me to conquer.”

Kael smiled.

“You’re honest.”

“I have no reason to lie.”

They fought back-to-back.

Kael struck.

Vale struck.

Two identical warriors moving as one.

For the first time, Kael understood what he was facing.

Vale wasn’t simply another version of him.

He knew Kael’s every movement.

Every weakness.

Every instinct.

Every technique.

Kael swung.

Vale blocked.

Kael kicked.

Vale dodged.

Kael vanished.

Vale vanished too.

They reappeared above the battlefield.

Their swords collided.

“You know everything I know,” Kael said.

Vale smiled.

“More.”

Kael struck.

Vale blocked.

“But there’s one thing you don’t know.”

Vale raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

Kael headbutted him.

Vale staggered.

Kael grinned.

“Me.”

Vale laughed.

“That’s exactly what I would have done.”

Kael shook his head.

“No.”

He attacked.

“You would have expected it.”

Their swords collided again.

Then again.

Then again.

Kael was faster.

Vale was stronger.

Neither could win.

Finally, Vale stepped back.

“You’ve changed.”

Kael lowered his sword.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“People.”

Vale frowned.

“What?”

“People changed me.”

Kael looked toward Mara.

“Love changed me.”

Toward Lyra.

“Family changed me.”

Toward the wolves.

“Choice changed me.”

Vale stared.

“And what did you become?”

Kael smiled.

“Someone you couldn’t predict.”

Vale’s smile disappeared.

For the first time— he looked afraid.

A scream tore across the battlefield.

Everyone looked up.

The black circle had become enormous.

Something was emerging.

A gigantic hand.

Then another.

Then a head.

Kael’s eyes widened.

It was impossible.

The creature had no face.

No body.

Only a massive silhouette made from dead stars.

The First Mother whispered:

“The First World.”

The creature spoke.

Its voice was every voice that had ever died.

**RETURN.**

The First Mother fell to her knees.

**YOU ABANDONED US.**

Kael looked at her.

“Mother?”

She couldn’t answer.

The creature continued.

**YOU CREATED A NEW WORLD FROM OUR REMAINS.**

Kael stared.

“What?”

The First Mother finally spoke.

“Our world…”

She looked at him.

“…was created from the corpse of the first.”

Kael’s blood went cold.

“That’s why the First Heart exists.”

She nodded.

“It was the last living fragment.”

“And the Second Heart?”

“The last fragment of death.”

Kael looked at Vale.

“And me?”

Vale answered.

“The last fragment of choice.”

Kael understood.

He wasn’t merely the heir.

He was the final surviving piece of the old universe.

The First World reached down.

Its hand covered half the sky.

Kael raised his sword.

“Everyone!”

The armies looked toward him.

“We don’t run.”

Mara stood beside him.

“We fight.”

Lyra joined them.

The First Wolf stepped forward.

Orion roared.

Vale raised his sword.

Kael looked toward the enormous creature.

“You want your world back?”

The creature answered:

**YES.**

Kael smiled.

“Then come and take it.”

The First World attacked.

Kael flew upward.

Mara followed.

Lyra unleashed every ounce of power she possessed.

The First Wolf transformed into pure silver light.

Orion became a giant black wolf.

Vale became a second Kael-shaped light.

Five beings flew toward the hand.

They struck together.

The impact split the sky.

The First World screamed.

But it didn’t retreat.

Instead— it opened its chest.

Inside was a single glowing object.

A heart.

Not golden.

Not silver.

Black.

Kael stopped.

The Second Heart inside him began shaking.

Vale whispered:

“The Third Heart.”

Kael stared.

“There are three?”

Vale nodded.

“The First gives life.”

“The Second gives death.”

“The Third…”

Kael couldn’t finish.

Vale answered.

“Decides whether either should exist.”

The black heart pulsed.

Once.

The entire battlefield froze.

Twice.

Every wolf stopped breathing.

Three times.

The universe itself seemed to pause.

The First World spoke:

**CHOOSE.**

Kael stared at the three Hearts.

Then he understood.

This had never been about defeating an enemy.

It had never been about killing Silence.

It had never been about destroying the First World.

Everything had been leading toward this moment.

The universe wanted him to choose what should exist.

Life.

Death.

Or neither.

Mara grabbed his hand.

“Don’t.”

Kael looked at her.

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t choose alone.”

Lyra took his other hand.

“You don’t have to.”

Kael looked at his daughter.

The First Wolf approached.

“You are my son.”

His mother stood behind him.

“You are my creation.”

Vale stepped forward.

“You are my possibility.”

Then Silence appeared.

Not as a monster.

Not as a god.

As a woman.

She stood beside Kael.

“And I am what you rejected.”

Kael looked at all of them.

For the first time, he wasn’t alone.

He smiled.

“I understand.”

The First World waited.

Kael raised his sword.

But instead of choosing one Heart— he brought his blade down between all three.

The Hearts shattered.

The universe screamed.

And every creature in existence disappeared.

Nothing remained.

No stars.

No worlds.

No wolves.

No humans.

No gods.

No time.

No space.

Only darkness.

Then— a heartbeat.

Kael opened his eyes.

He was lying in grass.

A blue sky stretched above him.

Birds sang.

Wind moved through the trees.

He sat up.

A young girl was standing nearby.

She looked at him.

“Are you lost?”

Kael stared.

“Who are you?”

She smiled.

“My name is Mara.”

Kael’s heart stopped.

“What?”

She laughed.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Kael stood.

“Where am I?”

“Home.”

“Where’s Lyra?”

The girl frowned.

“Who’s Lyra?”

Kael looked around.

Everything felt familiar.

But different.

Then he saw the moon.

One moon.

White.

Perfect.

No cracks.

No darkness.

No golden glow.

Kael touched his chest.

No First Heart.

No Second Heart.

Nothing.

He was simply alive.

Mara approached.

“Are you okay?”

Kael stared at her.

“I don’t know.”

She smiled.

“What’s your name?”

Kael opened his mouth.

Before he could answer— a howl echoed through the forest.

Mara turned.

“What was that?”

Kael looked toward the trees.

Something was watching.

Two golden eyes appeared in the darkness.

Then another pair.

Then another.

Hundreds.

Thousands.

A massive wolf stepped into the clearing.

Its fur was silver.

Its eyes were gold.

Kael knew it immediately.

The First Wolf.

But this time— it was young.

It looked at Kael.

Then spoke.

“Father.”

Kael froze.

Mara screamed.

The wolf smiled.

And behind them, the sky began turning red.

The Blood Moon was rising.

For the first time.

Again.
