5 – Sister, I’ve Finally Found You
Gu Yuan went to take a shower.
She had taken out over a dozen waves of killers without getting a single stain on her clothes, only to end up covered in blood because of that weakling. Disgusting.
Ryan finished patching up Chi Yu.
He stretched and was about to head to bed.
Then he saw Gu Yuan sitting in the living room drinking, with several empty bottles on the coffee table. His blood pressure shot up instantly. “Oh my god! You’re binge drinking again!”
“Can’t sleep.”
Gu Yuan was wearing silk pajamas, drinking liquor like it was water, lazily lounging against the sofa. Her brows were languid, half-drunk yet not quite, but her eyes remained perfectly clear.
Perhaps it was one careless remark from Chi Yu.
That had thrown her memories into disarray.
Her head was splitting with pain—an old ailment flaring up again. Though from the surface, it would be hard to tell anything was wrong with her. She was still sipping her drink at a leisurely pace.
She looked rather comfortable, actually.
But since four years ago, she hadn’t had a single good night’s sleep. Even when she did fall asleep, her slumber was shallow and lasted only a few hours at most.
She tried to drink herself into oblivion.
But her body had grown insensitive to alcohol.
Wanting to sleep but unable to; wanting to get drunk but failing.
An ordinary person would probably go mad under such prolonged conditions. But not her. With a blood debt still unavenged, how could she afford to go mad?
She only wanted to drive others mad.
“The condition flared up again?”
When Ryan saw Gu Yuan nod, he didn’t feel relaxed at all. His drowsiness vanished as he paced back and forth.
“How could this happen?!”
“I spent four whole years treating you! You hadn’t had an episode in a year! Our contract was finally about to end! I could finally go home to my mom!”
“And now you’re having another episode!”
Ryan crouched on the ground, clutching his head in despair.
She was the most difficult patient he had ever treated!
“Don’t cry, sweetie.”
Gu Yuan smiled comfortingly, as if it weren’t her head that was hurting. “When we renew the contract, I’ll double your pay.”
“You really are a generous patient…”
Ryan sighed, wanting to cry but having no tears left. He could only resign himself and stand up to ask, “Your condition doesn’t relapse without reason. Did something happen?”
“Remembered something.”
Gu Yuan spoke, her eyes deep and dark.
That person, that hand—who was it?
“Stop! Don’t think about it!”
Ryan seemed to sense something and quickly cut her off. He walked up to her and warned, “Whatever you do, don’t try to recall it, or all these years of treatment will be wasted. Let me hypnotize you. Don’t think about it, and get some sleep.”
“It won’t work.”
Gu Yuan smiled. Her will was too strong; her consciousness simply wouldn’t follow his guidance. So she said, “Didn’t you prescribe me sleeping pills before?”
“Absolutely not!”
Ryan refused sternly. “That medication is far too potent. It’s very damaging to the body and highly addictive. Unless there’s absolutely no other choice, I will never give it to you. You can’t take it again!”
“Then what shall we do?”
Gu Yuan swirled her wine glass, smiling radiantly, looking relaxed and carefree, as if she weren’t the one in pain.
Le Meng, wearing pink cat pajamas, came over carrying a glass of warm milk. After hearing their conversation, a bright idea struck her, and without thinking, she blurted out, “Yuan-jie! I have an idea! I’ll knock you out and you can sleep!”
Ryan’s eyes lit up.
When in doubt, solve it with physics!
Gu Yuan: “…”
She gave Le Meng a faint glance.
Le Meng quickly covered her mouth. “Ahem ahem, I was just kidding. Yuan-jie, stop drinking—you can’t get drunk anyway. Have some milk instead. Drinking on an empty stomach hurts your stomach!”
Gu Yuan took it and downed it in one go.
Her stomach did feel much better.
But she still had no trace of drowsiness.
She leaned against the sofa, eyes closed, resting. She waved a hand. “You two go back to sleep. I’ve long been used to this ailment—it won’t kill me…”
The two exchanged glances and had no choice but to leave.
She probably wouldn’t sleep well tonight anyway.
The living room quickly fell silent.
Gu Yuan kept her eyes shut, leaning against the sofa for a while, trying to rest. The headache didn’t improve; instead, she couldn’t stop herself from thinking about that image.
She paused, thinking of Chi Yu.
According to the doctor’s orders, she should stay far away from this “culprit” who triggered her condition. Yet, for some reason, she felt she ought to go take a look.
So she got up and went to the guest room.
Everyone in the villa had gone to sleep. Chi Yu seemed not to have woken either. The room was utterly quiet, moonlight spilling across the floor through the glass window.
She could vaguely make out the young man’s features.
Ryan had cleaned the blood and dust off him and casually dressed him in a set of white pajamas. His hair was slightly tousled, his eyes closed without a hint of guard, his handsome profile sinking into the pillow.
He looked rather well-behaved like this.
Gu Yuan walked up to him. In the moonlight, she saw the bruise she had left on his neck because of her suspicion—it looked somewhat fierce.
Her fingertips brushed over the mark.
As if sensing something, he grabbed her hand, his lashes trembling slightly as he murmured.
“Don’t go…”
Gu Yuan didn’t pull her hand back.
She slowly smiled and leaned down closer to him.
Her warm breath spread across his cheek as her fingertip traced the bruise on his neck. Her voice was soft. “Chi Yu, you’d better not let me find anything, or else…”
Before she could finish.
Gu Yuan paused slightly, as if catching a wisp of scent—clean and crisp, like frost on the withered lotus leaves of late autumn.
That inexplicable sense of familiarity surged up again.
Perhaps it had been masked by the smell of blood earlier, so she hadn’t noticed. Now she could clearly feel that she seemed to have smelled this scent somewhere before.
She subconsciously tried to recall, though she couldn’t remember clearly.
But this time, her head didn’t hurt.
For a fleeting moment, it was refreshing, as if all the messy thoughts in her mind had vanished, leaving only a sense of tranquil peace.
She was silent for a moment, not continuing her words.
Instead, she withdrew her hand and left.
The night was still, and the North Star shone brightly.
A sliver of moonlight fell upon the bed.
The young man on the bed opened his eyes.
In that instant, like a beast awakening, the gentleness on him dissipated, his gaze turning cold as if winter were descending—deep as an abyss.
“Sister…”
He murmured hoarsely, his fingertips rubbing together slightly, as if her warmth still lingered on them.
I’ve finally found you.
…
The next morning, the first rays of sunlight spilled over the vast fields of irises at Iris Manor. When the wind blew, the flowers rippled like waves.
Le Meng rubbed her panda eyes and went to check on Gu Yuan.
She thought Sister Yuan would have another sleepless night, but when she gently pushed the door open, she saw Sister Yuan sleeping soundly in bed. The usually vigilant woman hadn’t even woken up despite someone entering the room!
Le Meng was both shocked and delighted.
She tiptoed out and closed the door, then went to find Ryan. “Ryan, Sister Yuan is sleeping like a baby!”
Ryan, still in his pajamas and flip-flops, had been going through documents all night. Hearing Le Meng’s words, he tiredly rubbed his temples.
“Oh, sweetheart, no need to comfort me. Between me and my patient, one of us is bound to drop dead sooner or later…”
Le Meng laughed through her tears. “I’m serious!”
She tugged at his pajamas and dragged him over to take a look. Only then did he finally believe it. After getting through her shock, he carefully recorded the situation and returned to the study.
Then he sat on the floor and burst into tears.
“Thank God, she’s finally asleep, wuwuwuwu Mommy I miss you so much…”
Le Meng: “…”
So what if he’s in his forties?
Isn’t everyone still a big baby?
