“Tonight?” Lin Yao hadn’t expected it to be so soon and repeated the words in surprise.
“Yes, Grandfather already knows about our marriage. I’ll pick you up after work.”
Without waiting for Lin Yao’s reply, Huo Boyan hung up the phone.
“Should I prepare something… beep… beep…”
Only when she heard the sound from her phone did Lin Yao realize Huo Boyan had already hung up. She cursed angrily.
Hanging up so fast—would it kill you to let me finish speaking?!
After all, it was their first meeting. Lin Yao still felt she should prepare something as a gift.
Old Master Huo had everything, and she didn’t know what he liked. After thinking it over, she decided to make a cake herself. She wasn’t good at much else, but making cakes was her specialty!
Just as Lin Yao brought the finished cake back from the shop, Huo Boyan called, telling her to come out now—he was already waiting at the door.
Lin Yao immediately grabbed the cake and went out. A black Maybach was parked at the entrance, with the driver standing by the car door. He reached out to take the cake from her hand and opened the car door for her.
Inside the car, Huo Boyan was dressed in a black suit, legs crossed, his expression cold. Hearing the door open, he turned to glance at her but said nothing.
He’s handsome, but so pretentious!
That was Lin Yao’s thought at the moment, though of course she could only think it secretly to herself—there was no way she’d say it out loud.
“It’s my first time meeting your grandfather. I didn’t know what he likes, so I made a cake to bring. Is that okay?”
Lin Yao felt she should still tell him about the cake.
“It’s fine. He’ll like whatever you bring. He’s your grandfather now too.”
Huo Boyan was displeased with how Lin Yao was distancing their relationship.
Lin Yao was taken aback, noticing Huo Boyan’s slight anger. She quickly nodded and corrected herself, “Mm, I brought a cake I made for Grandfather.”
“Remember, don’t slip up in front of Grandfather.” Huo Boyan’s expression softened slightly, but he warned her again, just to be safe.
“Don’t worry, I won’t. I have my professional integrity!” Lin Yao assured him.
Professional integrity?
Huo Boyan smiled disdainfully.
Soon, they arrived at Old Master Huo’s residence—a villa with excellent privacy.
There were many bodyguards stationed outside. Compared to Huo Boyan’s villa, this place felt more like a home.
Huo Boyan’s villa was just big and luxurious, but cold and impersonal.
Lin Yao held the cake in one hand and actively linked her other arm through Huo Boyan’s.
Seeing Huo Boyan’s gaze on her, she immediately explained, “What’s wrong? Didn’t the agreement say we have to act affectionate in front of Grandfather? Isn’t this right?”
Only then did Huo Boyan withdraw his gaze, replying coldly, “You did it right.”
Old Master Huo had been waiting for them in the living room. Seeing them walk in arm in arm, his face immediately lit up with a smile.
That brat really didn’t lie to me!
Huo Boyan led Lin Yao to Old Master Huo and introduced her, “Grandfather, this is Lin Yao!”
“Grandfather! Hello, I didn’t know what you’d like since it’s our first meeting, so I made a low-sugar cake. I hope you don’t mind!”
Lin Yao also called out “Grandfather,” feeling somewhat nervous inside, afraid he might not like it.
Old Master Huo heard that it was made by Lin Yao herself and was low in sugar, something he, an old man with high blood pressure, could completely eat.
What a thoughtful child, he thought to himself, feeling even more satisfied with Lin Yao. He happily accepted the cake, saying, “You didn’t have to bring a gift when you came! So formal!”
Seeing that Old Master Huo took the cake without any sign of dissatisfaction, Lin Yao breathed a sigh of relief.
She had thought that after being in such a high position for so many years, Old Master Huo might have become somewhat self-important, but now he seemed just like an ordinary, kindly old grandfather.
“How did you and this brat meet?” Old Master Huo pulled Lin Yao aside, looking curious.
Huo Boyan had been quietly observing Lin Yao’s reactions from the side, but upon hearing his grandfather’s question, he immediately interrupted, “Grandfather, let’s eat first.”
He seemed afraid that Lin Yao might say something she shouldn’t.
Old Master Huo thought his grandson didn’t want him, an old man, prying too much into his private affairs, and quickly said, “Alright, let’s start dinner then! Yao Yao must be hungry, right?”
“A little, Grandfather. Boyan and I met when he came to my shop to buy a cake. I fell in love with him at first sight, and I was the one who pursued him first!”
Lin Yao knew Huo Boyan was afraid she might slip up and let Grandfather know the truth, but she still felt she needed to come up with an excuse to make Grandfather believe it. Otherwise, he would keep asking in the future.
“So Yao Yao runs a cake shop! And you were the one who pursued this brat! This brat really doesn’t know how to behave!”
Old Master Huo nodded approvingly. Running a cake shop at such a young age—impressive!
Lin Yao knew the old man was only scolding Huo Boyan in words but was probably secretly pleased that she had pursued him. “Yes, Grandfather. If you ever want to eat cake in the future, just give me a call. I’ll make it and bring it over for you.”
After dinner, Old Master Huo asked them to stay the night and return home the next day. Lin Yao didn’t dare refuse the old man’s request and looked at Huo Boyan.
Noticing Lin Yao’s expression, Old Master Huo immediately said, “Don’t look at that brat! His opinion doesn’t count in this house. As long as you agree, that’s all that matters!”
Lin Yao felt a bit awkward. After thinking for a moment, she said, “Grandfather, Boyan and I are husband and wife. I can’t just think of myself; I have to consider Boyan’s feelings too. That’s how we can last long.”
Huo Boyan was very pleased with Lin Yao’s words. “Let’s do as Grandfather says and stay here for the night. We’ll go back tomorrow.”
Old Master Huo also nodded in satisfaction. No wonder this brat got married all of a sudden—with someone as good as Yao Yao, he had to act fast!
Back in their room, Lin Yao felt too guilty to look at Huo Boyan, afraid he would blame her for taking the initiative and telling Grandfather how they met.
After finishing his shower, Huo Boyan came out wearing only a bathrobe. Seeing Lin Yao sitting on the edge of the bed with her back to him, unaware that he had come out, he thought she was lost in thought.
“What are you thinking about?”
Here it comes!
He’s definitely going to question me!
It’s all my fault for being too clever and saying the wrong thing.
Lin Yao turned around as if resigned to her fate. She saw that the collar of his bathrobe was loosely open, and water droplets from his hair dripped onto his chest, sliding down to his faintly visible abs.
It made her think of that night a month ago, vaguely remembering how much she had enjoyed touching them.
“I didn’t mean to lie to Grandfather about us meeting at the cake shop. I was just afraid he would keep asking in the future.”
Lin Yao averted her gaze, not daring to look any longer, and lowered her head as she explained.
Huo Boyan fell silent for a moment. Even though he knew her claim of love at first sight was false, hearing it from her lips stirred an indescribable feeling.
The atmosphere in the room grew increasingly tense. Huo Boyan remained silent, and Lin Yao dared not speak either.
Is she really that afraid of me?
Huo Boyan studied the expression on Lin Yao’s face before finally saying, “You handled today’s situation correctly. I’ll forgive you this time, but next time—”
Before he could finish, Lin Yao immediately responded, “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t make such a mistake again!”
Huo Boyan was pleased with her obedience.
“Come here and help me dry my hair.”
