The young nurse quickly chimed in, “Doctor Meng is off duty today.”

Lu Shian lowered his eyes to hide the trace of disappointment within them, nodded, and prepared to leave.

Just as Lu Shian turned around, he saw Meng Yu approaching. He was also dressed in casual clothes, a grey-blue set that matched Lu Shian’s outfit for the day in an oddly harmonious way.

Beating Lu Shian to it, the young nurse asked, “Doctor Meng, aren’t you off today?”

Meng Yu walked closer and replied, “I left something in the office and came back to get it.” He then stood in front of Lu Shian, asking naturally, “Here for a follow-up?” There was no trace of the awkwardness or distance one might expect after not seeing each other for half a month.

Lu Shian nodded. “Mm.”

“How is it?” Meng Yu asked.

“Quite good.”

Lu Shian’s little admirer couldn’t help but smile and tease the two of them. “Doctor Meng, President Lu, your clothes match so well today. They look just like a couple’s outfit.”

Meng Yu looked at Lu Shian and smiled. “They do match. What do you think, President Lu?”

Lu Shian did not answer directly but shifted the topic. “Weren’t you going to get something?”

“Oh, right. President Lu, wait for me a moment. I have something to say to you.”

Lu Shian hesitated for a long while before giving a stiff nod. “Alright.”

Receiving a response, Meng Yu returned to the office. Two minutes later, Lu Shian’s brows furrowed slightly as he saw Meng Yu return holding an elegant gift bag. The bag was small and refined, printed with a jewelry brand’s logo, clearly a gift for a woman. Lu Shian guessed it was either a necklace or a bracelet.

The nurse, having sharp eyes, also spotted the bag. She asked hurriedly, “Doctor Meng, since when do you have a girlfriend?”

Meng Yu looked down at the gift bag and explained, “It is for my sister.”

Just then, a male doctor emerged from a consultation room heading for the restroom. Hearing Meng Yu mention a sister, his eyes lit up immediately. He rushed over and hooked an arm around Meng Yu’s shoulder. “You rascal, you have a sister? Level with me, is she a god-sister or your biological sister?”

Meng Yu took a deliberate glance at Lu Shian and curled his lips. “Biological.”

Lu Shian’s expression softened slightly. He cleared his throat awkwardly and looked away, breaking the locked gaze with Meng Yu. He knew Meng Yu had a sister named Meng Wan. With his state of mind shifted, looking at the gift bag again made the present seem a bit modest.

Meng Yu’s family had gone bankrupt years ago, and he probably didn’t make much as a doctor. Lu Shian’s thoughts drifted; he suddenly felt that the 500,000 for the caregiving fee had been too little.

Hearing that it was a biological sister, the male doctor abandoned his trip to the restroom and pulled Meng Yu aside to suck up to him. “You are so handsome, so your sister must be a beauty. Introduce us sometime.”

Meng Yu rejected him flatly. “She is still in school; it is not convenient.”

After sending the doctor away, Meng Yu was about to ask Lu Shian for his contact information when a soft, gentle voice rang out from nearby.

“Doctor Meng.”

Meng Yu looked up. “Xiao Zhuo, why are you here?”

The softened expression on Lu Shian’s face turned grim instantly. The voice had sounded familiar, but hearing Meng Yu call him Xiao Zhuo, he knew exactly who it was.

“The massage method you taught me last time was very effective. I came today because I have a question to ask you.” As he drew closer, Zhuo Xun noticed Meng Yu’s attire. “Are you off duty today?”

Before Meng Yu could respond, Lu Shian, who had been standing with his back to Zhuo Xun, turned around abruptly. The porcelain-white, delicate face of the newcomer matched his soft personality perfectly, and his white shirt made him look even cleaner and gentler. Just like in his memories, this person had not changed a bit.

Zhuo Xun looked over, and when he saw Lu Shian’s anger-tinged face, his own turned deathly pale. Lu Shian had been facing away the whole time, and combined with his casual outfit, Zhuo Xun never expected it to be him.

Their eyes met. Zhuo Xun instinctively looked away, but Lu Shian stared him down, his eyes laced with ice.

Meng Yu sensed the tension and said to Zhuo Xun, “Xiao Zhuo, I have things to do today. You can ask your questions later.”

“Alright, Doctor Meng. I will head out then,” Zhuo Xun replied quickly and left in a panic.

“What is wrong?” Meng Yu led Lu Shian into the stairwell.

“You are that close to him? Calling him so intimately?” Lu Shian’s eyes flashed with fury; his powerful aura was something most people couldn’t handle.

Meng Yu answered truthfully, “Our relationship is ordinary. He occasionally asks me questions.” He paused before adding, “He was your roommate; you used to be very close.”

“I do not need you to remind me!” Lu Shian’s voice rose. His chest felt tight and painful. Since seeing Zhuo Xun, his good mood for the day had vanished.

“Shishi,” Meng Yu said softly, calling his name in a comforting manner. He didn’t know how Lu Shian had changed so much, nor what had happened between him and Zhuo Xun, but he could clearly feel the rage and hatred radiating from him.

Lu Shian leaned against the wall and rubbed his forehead irritably. He looked at Meng Yu and asked, “He came to ask you questions? Does he work at the hospital?”

Meng Yu was startled by the question, but he composed himself and answered calmly, “He is one of your father’s caregivers.”

At the mention of Fang Ziming, the anger Lu Shian had just managed to suppress flared up again.

“He actually dares to,” Lu Shian clenched his fists, forcing down the surging emotions. “Since when?”

“I ran into him at the hospital two years ago. He was already taking care of your father then.”

Lu Shian and Lu Xuelan had not visited since Fang Ziming was hospitalized. They had hired the best caregivers but never knew who they were.

Seeing Lu Shian’s unstable emotional state, Meng Yu did not press further. Instead, he said, “I will take you back.”

“No need. Qi Lei and the driver are waiting for me in the garage. Go do what you need to do.” With that, Lu Shian did not head for the elevator but went straight down the stairs to the basement.

By the time Meng Yu got to the garage to drive, Lu Shian’s car had already pulled away. He sat in the driver’s seat and took out his phone. He had failed to get Lu Shian’s number again. Unless he went to wait outside the Fangsheng building, the chances of them meeting again were nearly zero.

After staring at his phone for half a minute, Meng Yu dialed Meng Wan’s number.

“Brother, are you on your way?”

“I left your gift at the hospital and came back for it. I will be at your school in half an hour.”

“Hurry up! I am starving.”

Meng Yu turned serious instantly. “You are too young to be throwing around the word death.”

“I know, I know. Just get here quickly,” Meng Wan’s voice urged from the other end.
