“What’s the work environment like in your department?”
“It’s alright.
Just the usual, nothing special,” Chloe answered earnestly.
“That’s good.
That’s good.” Aunt Miller breathed a sigh of relief.
As Chloe looked at her, she seemed to see the shadow of someone else in the older woman’s features.
“Are you Zara Miller’s mother?”
Chloe felt she needed a moment to process this new information, meeting Aunt Miller’s earnest gaze.
“Yes, but we haven’t been in touch for a long time…”
“She’s already the team leader among the interns,” Chloe explained.
“Although she hasn’t become a full-time employee yet, it won’t be difficult for her with her skills.
Moreover, she has a great character.
You can rest easy, Aunt Miller.”
“It’s not that I’m worried.
It’s just that she told me she was working as a designer in Veridia.
Now that I know she’s actually here in Maridia, I have to pretend I don’t know anything.
I don’t even know if she’s doing well right now…”
Aunt Miller had video calls with her daughter every night, and in the videos, Zara was always in her bedroom.
Chloe guessed that this probably wasn’t the only lie Zara had told her mother.
“Aunt Miller, why don’t you make some food?” Chloe suggested.
“I’ll take it to Zara at work tomorrow so she can have a taste of your cooking.
Don’t worry, I won’t give anything away.”
Now that she was expecting a child of her own, she could empathize with Aunt Miller’s feelings even more.
Overjoyed by Chloe’s willingness to help, Aunt Miller beamed and immediately hurried into the kitchen to prepare some food, even humming a little tune.
“URGH…”
Chloe suddenly felt unwell.
Just looking at the seafood on the table completely ruined her appetite.
Realizing it was morning sickness, she hurriedly ran to the bathroom.
Despite having barely eaten a few bites, she threw up violently.
“Chloe, what’s wrong?
Why are you throwing up…”
“Aunt Miller, I’m fine.
Don’t worry about me.” Chloe forced herself to hold on and didn’t open the door, leaving Aunt Miller to wait anxiously outside.
“Chloe, did I do something wrong?
Was it too salty or too spicy?
Why did you throw up?
Do you feel sick anywhere else?
Should I call an ambulance for you?”
“There’s no need, Aunt Miller.
Just leave me be.
I’ll be fine after a little rest.”
Chloe began vomiting again.
The retching sounds were loud, and she felt absolutely miserable.
“Mr.
Austin, Chloe has been throwing up in there,” Aunt Miller said as Jensen arrived.
“I asked if she wanted to go to the hospital, but she said she just needs to rest.
What should we do…”
“I’ll go check on her.
Brew some refreshing tea to clear her palate and clear all the seafood off the table.” Jensen reacted quickly, immediately realizing that Chloe might be experiencing morning sickness.
When Chloe finally finished vomiting and opened the door, Jensen saw her pale, weakened face.
“Chloe, you’ve suffered so much,” he said.
“I really wish I could go beat the crap out of that damn Caden Sterling right now to vent your anger.”
“It’s okay, Jensen.
It’s just a bout or two of vomiting.
I feel much better now.”
Jensen helped her sit down on the sofa.
By now, she had completely lost her appetite.
“Don’t go to the company for the next few days.
Wait until you’re feeling better and the morning sickness passes before you go back.” Jensen was only looking out for her.
Chloe also felt that she probably shouldn’t be in crowded places right now, so she gave a gentle nod.
“I only saw Vivian Sullivan today,” Chloe said, leaning back against the sofa, her voice a bit weak.
“Caden played me.
He could have signed the divorce papers, but I’m starting to suspect he has no intention of divorcing me right now.”
Aunt Miller promptly brought over the freshly brewed palate-cleansing tea.
Seeing Jensen and Chloe talking, she tactfully withdrew.
“Fine.
Caden is clearly doing this on purpose.
It looks like we’ll need to find a better divorce lawyer.” Jensen narrowed his eyes, mentally searching for a suitable candidate.
“Jensen, could you look into Ethan Paine’s track record?
Find out his win rate in the divorce cases he’s handled.”
“I’ve already looked into him.
He’s handled a little over a dozen divorce cases in total, and he’s won every single one of them.
You could say he has a hundred percent win rate in this field.
Does that statistic sound a bit fake, or even a little scary?” Jensen smiled helplessly.
He had already considered having Ethan act as Chloe’s lawyer, which was why he had someone investigate him beforehand.
At first, he hadn’t believed Ethan’s record when he saw it.
But after watching a few recordings of his courtroom performances, Jensen felt that Ethan’s flawless track record might not be fake after all.
“Jensen, I want Ethan Paine to be my divorce lawyer.
I’ve made up my mind.”
“I’ll contact him in a bit.
Do you want to go sleep for a while or eat something else?
You’re looking paler by the minute.”
Chloe shook her head.
She couldn’t afford to delay the divorce any longer.
If she waited much longer, she would start showing.
Caden would find out, and she wouldn’t be able to hide it from him.
“Baby, you need to grow a little slower,” Chloe murmured to her abdomen, her head bowed.
“Mommy hasn’t gotten her divorce yet.
You have to wait for me.
You can’t let that man find out about you…”
Jensen sighed and went to contact Ethan.
“If you had come to me earlier, the lawsuit might already be underway,” Ethan remarked over the phone.
“Now that Caden Sterling has gone abroad, there’s no telling when he’ll be back.”
Ethan made sarcastic remarks, causing Jensen to frown.
“We’re coming to you for help, not to listen to your lectures.
We will pay whatever price you ask.”
“This isn’t about the money.
I said long ago that I was the best person for the job.
It seems President Austin didn’t quite trust me back then.” Ethan seemed to still be testing Jensen.
It appeared his level of trust in him wasn’t very high.
“I don’t think you’re the best lawyer out there, so you aren’t necessarily the best person for the job.
And the person you’re helping isn’t me, it’s Chloe.”
As soon as Jensen finished speaking, Ethan hung up.
Jensen found it baffling.
He thought it over repeatedly, wondering if something he had said had offended him.
He wondered, “This Ethan Paine never liked me in the past.
Surely he doesn’t still hold a grudge, does he?”
But the next second, Chloe began to retch again.
Aunt Miller was terrified, fearing that the food she had made today was to blame.
She stood to the side, extremely nervous.
“Aunt Miller, go ahead and attend to your own tasks.
You don’t need to stand guard here.” Jensen felt that Chloe wouldn’t want someone staring at her, so he sent Aunt Miller away.
Aunt Miller hadn’t expected Jensen and Chloe to let her off the hook so easily without harping on her mistake.
Receiving the instruction, she immediately went to find something else to do.
“Chloe, go back to your room and rest,” Jensen said.
“It’ll keep Aunt Miller from overthinking.
The fewer people who know about this, the safer you’ll be.”
