It was Huang Qiuyue on the hospital bed who had opened her eyes.
Seeing this, Yun Su quickly responded, “Grandma, I’m here.”
Yun Qingsong also stepped forward excitedly and held Huang Qiuyue’s hand. “Qiuyue, do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
Huang Qiuyue gently squeezed his hand in reassurance. “I’m fine.”
With Huang Qiuyue awake, both grandfather and granddaughter finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Yun Su pressed the call button by the bed, and a doctor came in to perform a full check-up on Huang Qiuyue.
“Don’t worry, she’s fine now. Just keep her diet light for a while.”
The doctor’s words put both of them at ease.
After the doctor left, Huang Qiuyue spoke again from the bed, “Xiao Su, look at how pale you are. Go get some rest. Your grandfather can stay here.”
Yun Su had already spent the entire previous day walking around the ancient town, and then stayed at the hospital all night in a state of anxiety. At this point, both her body and mind were at their limit.
Since her grandparents didn’t need her at the hospital for now, she went home to rest.
Yun Su lived with her grandparents in a quiet courtyard. The moment she entered, she was greeted by the fragrance of flowers filling the yard.
Because the two elders loved plants and flowers, the courtyard was spacious and filled with carefully tended, rare varieties.
Surrounded by the scent of blossoms, Yun Su walked through the yard and entered the main hall.
Housekeeper Zhang looked surprised when he saw her. “Miss Yun, you’re back.”
At over sixty years old, Housekeeper Zhang had worked for the Yun family for more than thirty years and had watched Yun Su grow up.
Knowing he must have been worried about her grandmother, Yun Su spoke before he could ask, “Uncle Zhang, I came back last night. Grandma is fine now.”
Housekeeper Zhang clasped his hands together in front of his chest and muttered a few prayers. “That’s good, heaven has blessed us.”
Yun Su closed her eyes wearily. “Uncle Zhang, I’m going upstairs to rest.”
“Alright, Miss Yun.”
Yun Su went upstairs to her room.
Her room was regularly cleaned, so everything was spotless.
She slept until seven in the evening, by which time it was already dark outside.
When she first woke up, she felt disoriented, unsure of where she was. After a moment of blankness, she remembered that she had already returned.
She hadn’t eaten for a long time, and only now did she feel how hungry she was. She went to the kitchen and made something to eat.
Sitting at the dining table, Yun Su ate a steaming bowl of tomato and egg noodles while watching the cold white glow of the streetlights fall across the stone-paved path in the courtyard.
This was the scene she was most familiar with. For more than twenty years, she had played and laughed along this stone path. When her grandfather used to repair the fence, she, still small, would chase butterflies nearby. She had grown up in this courtyard.
Now, after being away for just over two months, she already felt a sense of nostalgia.
After finishing her noodles, Yun Su placed the dishes into the dishwasher and tidied up efficiently before preparing to head to the hospital to see her grandmother.
Just as Yun Su reached the door of the ward, she saw Tang Zhifan approaching with a fruit basket.
“Team leader?” Yun Su greeted him.
Tang Zhifan was dressed in a neat suit, though his usually meticulously styled hair was slightly messy now, as if he had come straight from work.
“Yun Su, I just finished handling some matters at the bureau and came over. How is the old madam now?”
Lowering her voice outside the ward, Yun Su replied, “The doctor said this morning that there’s no major issue anymore. I just came home too. Let’s go in.”
“Alright.”
Yun Su opened the door and led Tang Zhifan inside.
Inside the ward, Huang Qiuyue was leaning against the bed reading, while Yun Qingsong sat on the sofa peeling an apple.
Seeing them enter, Huang Qiuyue set her book aside and said kindly, “Why did you two come together? Zhifan, have a seat. Xiao Su, go pour him a glass of water.”
“Okay, Grandma.” Yun Su put down her handbag and went to pour water.
Yun Qingsong was the director of the transmigration bureau. There were five teams in total, and Tang Zhifan had always worked under him. Because of his outstanding ability, he had been promoted three years ago to become the leader of one of the teams.
A year ago, when Yun Su joined the bureau, her grandfather arranged for her to work under Tang Zhifan so that he could take care of her.
Meanwhile, Tang Zhifan handed the fruit basket to Yun Qingsong. “Director, how is the old madam’s condition now?”
Yun Qingsong placed the basket by the bedside and handed the peeled apple to Huang Qiuyue before replying, “The doctor said she’s recovering well, but she needs proper rest.”
“That’s good. The team was busy last night, so I could only come now to visit you both. Please forgive me.”
Yun Su walked over with a glass of water and handed it to Tang Zhifan. “Team leader, I just finished a mission. It’s only natural that you’ve been busy.”
Yun Qingsong then turned his concern to Yun Su’s recent mission.
“How was your mission this time, Xiao Su? Was it fun?”
“…”
Looking at her grandfather’s indulgent expression, it seemed as though he had sent her off just to have fun.
“Grandpa, I completed it very well. I wasn’t there to play,” Yun Su said, sitting by the bed and hugging Huang Qiuyue’s arm as she acted coquettishly. “Grandma, look at Grandpa. He always treats me like a child.”
“Haha, yes, yes, our Xiao Su has grown up,” Huang Qiuyue said with a smile, patting Yun Su’s hand.
Yun Qingsong clicked his tongue in disagreement. “Still just a little girl. Zhifan, did Xiao Su cause you any trouble?”
Tang Zhifan answered his superior with a serious expression, “Of course not.”
“See, Grandpa? I told you I could handle the mission just fine,” Yun Su said proudly.
“Our Xiao Su is truly smart,” Yun Qingsong praised generously.
“But in the future, you must still be careful during missions. Improper operations could cause temporal disorder, and that would be troublesome,” Yun Qingsong added, then turned to Tang Zhifan. “Zhifan, you should continue to look after Xiao Su.”
“Director, please rest assured,” Tang Zhifan replied for what felt like the hundredth time.
After chatting for a while longer, it grew late.
Yun Su walked Tang Zhifan out, then stayed a bit longer in the ward with her grandmother.
Eventually, urged by her grandparents, she had no choice but to return home.
Huang Qiuyue recovered well, and the doctor said she could be discharged after some time.
Yun Su’s days became quite relaxed.
Aside from visiting the hospital daily to accompany her grandmother, she helped her grandfather take care of the plants in the courtyard.
On the day Huang Qiuyue was discharged, Yun Su asked the chef to prepare a large feast at home, and the family gathered together for a meal.
The next day, Yun Su returned to the bureau.
She had been idle for quite a while and hadn’t gone back since her last return.
As the well-connected young lady, no one dared to criticize her, especially since everyone knew she had been taking care of the director’s wife in the hospital. Although most of the care had been handled by nurses, she had at least been there to keep her company and lift her spirits.
But unexpectedly, the moment she returned and before she could even sit down, the team leader called her over.
Was she being assigned a task so soon?
