The next day,
Xia Canglan woke up looking pale and weak, startling her father who had come to wake her.
“Lanlan, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? Why do you look so pale?” he cried anxiously, his hand instinctively reaching out to take her pulse.
After a long while, her father’s face turned serious, his brows furrowed, and he looked at his daughter with puzzlement.
“Lanlan—your pulse indicates that you suffered a great loss of energy overnight. You… tell your father honestly, did you do something yesterday?”
Xia Canglan smiled guiltily. “Dad, I went to bed early yesterday, didn’t you all see that?”
“That’s strange then. Could it be… that I really made a mistake?” her father asked, puzzled.
“Oh my god, you almost scared me to death! The way you looked just now, I thought our Lanlan… Ugh, ugh, bad things always come true, I was just kidding, ugh, ugh.”
Xia Canglan hugged her mother and laughed,
“Mom, don’t worry, I’m really fine. Maybe it’s just—my period is coming soon, my stomach hurts a little. Ugh, I’m so hungry, can we eat now?”
She tried to change the subject quickly, but as soon as her mother heard her daughter was hungry, she forgot everything and turned to serve them.
Xia’s father scratched his head in confusion.
He had clearly felt a headache when he took her pulse, so why was her stomach hurting?
After dinner, Xia Canglan went to work with her father.
“Lanlan, are you sure you don’t need Dad to ask you to stay home and rest?”
Xia’s father was worried that his daughter might feel even worse at work.
“It’s okay, Dad. If I can’t handle it, I’ll go directly to our head nurse to ask for leave.”
Xia Canglan had just changed out of her nurse’s uniform when she heard a commotion outside, with someone angrily shouting, “Where are the doctors?”
She peeked out and saw Ji Wuren, weak and unable to stand, being held up by two burly henchmen. Another of his men was dragging a nurse, yelling at them to send doctors to help.
Tsk tsk, what a frail-looking—perverted man.
Xia Canglan was about to turn away when the head nurse grabbed her and pulled her to Ji Wuren’s side to help.
She pursed her lips, and seeing the stretcher approaching, her eyes flickered slightly. She pretended to help lift the person, but lacking the strength,
“splat!”
“Ouch!”
Ji Wuren’s face slammed against the hard edge of the stretcher, leaving a bloody mark right in the middle of his face.
“What are you doing? Who told you to let go?” His subordinate glared at Xia Canglan.
“Ah…sorry, I didn’t expect this person to be so heavy. It’s normal for a weak woman like me to lack strength, isn’t it? Why are you yelling at me?”
The apology was perfunctory, the tone infuriating.
Ji Wuren’s men were almost driven mad by the nurse’s attitude.
“Hurry up…take me to…” Ji Wuren already felt something was wrong with his lower body. He couldn’t get up, and nothing he did worked.
He didn’t have the energy to pay attention to anything else; he just wanted to get a doctor to check on him.
“Get to work! What are you staring at me for, little nurse? I’ll complain if you’re not responsible!”
“Okay,” Xia Canglan replied.
She reached out and grabbed the limp Ji Wuren, her eyes darting around, then her foot slipped.
With a “thump,”
she “accidentally” bumped into the man supporting Ji Wuren. The man lost his balance and fell, his elbow slamming into Ji Wuren’s legs.
“Ahhhhhh~~”
A piercing scream echoed throughout the hospital, so horrific that it sent shivers down everyone’s spines.
“Damn, what’s that sound? It’s so terrifying! It’s so chilling!”
“It sounds like a pig being slaughtered during Chinese New Year, but even sharper. Maybe it’s not a human voice?” ”
Yeah, if it were a human voice, it would be far too shrill and piercing. It’s more terrifying than Zigong! Hahaha~”
The curious onlookers, unaware of the truth, discussed amongst themselves. Although no one could give a definitive answer, they might actually be right about the truth.
Hearing screams coming from the operating room, Xia Canglan smiled with satisfaction.
Just as she was about to return to her post, Zhou Fumei, who had rushed over after hearing the news, pulled her aside and carefully checked her for injuries.
“Are you alright, Lanlan? Damn it, I heard those guys dared to complain about you being clumsy? If you’re considered clumsy, then how many people in our hospital can be considered clever?”
“But what exactly happened? Lanlan, you don’t seem that weak.”
Zhou Fumei vaguely sensed that things weren’t as others were saying, but with so many people talking, no one cared about the truth.
“I’m fine, I just felt a little unwell today, and I didn’t have much strength. I didn’t expect… Anyway, I’m out now, at least my ears and eyes don’t have to suffer.”
“Pfft!”
Zhou Fumei burst out laughing, gave Xia Canglan a thumbs up, looked around, and then quietly leaned close to her ear,
“Lanlan, I’ll tell you a secret. Yesterday, I saw them grab a woman and take her into their house. I didn’t see her come out afterward. Do you think that woman might already—”
She made a terrified cutting motion across her neck, and Xia Canglan froze, looking at Zhou Fumei, who was trembling like a naive girl approaching her, and shook her head inwardly, thinking she was overthinking things.
Yesterday, Zhou Fumei didn’t see her take the pregnant woman out because she climbed over a different wall,
which led directly to the path in the grove behind. That way, the pregnant woman could wake up and go home without anyone noticing.
However—
Xia Canglan gently pinched the chubby girl’s round face and said irritably,
“Little chubby girl, you’ve got too much to worry about, huh? You dare to stare at that pervert’s house? Don’t you know how many lives you’d have if those people found out?”
Zhou Fumei hugged her chubby self in terror,
“Are those people really that scary? Waaah, Lanlan, I’ll never do it again. I couldn’t sleep yesterday, so I got up and sat down and accidentally peeked. I was so scared, waaaah…”
Before she could finish speaking, Xia Canglan manually pinched her mouth shut.
Before she could ask what was wrong, she saw more than a dozen tall, burly men dressed in black enter, each carrying a long knife, and march towards Ji Wuren’s operating room.
Passersby were terrified and quickly gave way, swallowing nervously until they saw the group walk away, at which point they clung to the walls and left.
“Oh my god, Lanlan, what…is something bad going to happen? Should we tell the head nurse or call the police?”
Zhou Fumei’s voice trembled as she nervously glanced at the situation not far away.
Xia Canglan chuckled inwardly; even in her fear, her gossipy nature couldn’t resist secretly watching the drama unfold.
“Go tell the head nurse, and it would be best if she brought hospital security. Something big might happen later.”
