Lying stiffly on the supermarket floor, Mo Han had no sleep at all.
But he didn’t dare open his eyes. He was afraid that if he did, he would see zombies wandering outside—and then he definitely wouldn’t be able to sleep.
Bang… bang…
While he was trying to fall asleep, something suddenly hit the glass door of the supermarket.
Mo Han almost cried.
This world was definitely against him!
Even though Zhong Tianxiang had been asleep, he woke up immediately at the sound.
The two of them carefully peeked out from behind the shelves toward the entrance.
After just one look, their hearts sank.
Dozens of zombies had gathered outside, trying to break in.
Mo Han swallowed nervously.
“What do we do? How do we escape? ”
Zhong Tianxiang shook his head.
“No need to escape. Just sleep. These zombies aren’t strong enough to break the door easily. Our smell won’t spread outside. Once the scent we left outside fades, they’ll leave.”
Then he lay back down.
Mo Han almost spat blood in shock.
Are you serious?! There are dozens of zombies outside, and you can still sleep?!
Even though he couldn’t relax, Mo Han knew Zhong Tianxiang was right.
So he lay back down and forced himself to sleep.
By the second half of the night, the zombies finally left.
Mo Han still couldn’t sleep well and only fell asleep close to dawn.
Of course, he was soon woken up again.
Rubbing his eyes, he cursed those zombies in his heart. Was it so hard to let him have one good night’s sleep?
Just as Zhong Tianxiang was about to speak—
Boom!
A loud noise came from the entrance.
Then they heard hurried footsteps and someone shouting:
“Quick! Gather supplies! The zombies are coming!”
Mo Han felt like crying again.
Why was this world always making things worse for him?!
With these people making noise, zombies would definitely be attracted soon.
Hearing footsteps getting closer, both of them became alert.
Soon, someone discovered them.
But before he could react, Zhong Tianxiang controlled a metal blade and pressed it against his neck.
People outside immediately surrounded them and pointed guns.
“Who are you? Let him go! ”
Zhong Tianxiang said calmly,
“Zombies are coming soon. I don’t want trouble. We just want to leave safely. Let us go, or I’ll kill him.”
The man who seemed to be the leader lowered his gun first.
“We don’t want conflict either. You can leave.”
He didn’t ask Zhong Tianxiang to release the hostage. He knew forcing it wouldn’t work.
There were four of them—three men and one woman. All had guns, and they were all under thirty.
Seeing them, Mo Han suddenly realized something.
If the young man being held hostage was excluded, the remaining three were likely the same group that later traveled with him and Zhong Tianxiang in the novel.
In the story, they once had another teammate who died early.
That must be this young man.
Mo Han quietly glanced at him.
So he would die before they met the female lead.
Suddenly, the leader raised his gun again.
“Stay alert. Something is coming.”
Everyone became tense.
Even though he couldn’t see anything, Zhong Tianxiang also felt danger approaching. He released the blade and stared at the entrance.
The young man glared at him and stepped back to the group.
Mo Han copied everyone else, staring at the door.
Then—
A thick brown tail, as wide as a barrel, suddenly appeared and smashed their car outside.
Crash!
The glass wall shattered completely.
A huge snake head pushed inside.
The snake’s cold, emotionless eyes made Mo Han feel extreme fear.
Compared to this creature, the zombies were nothing.
A tall, thin man with glasses spoke:
“Be careful. It’s a level-two mutant snake, and it has strength enhancement.”
Everyone was shocked.
Mo Han and Zhong Tianxiang were only level-one ability users.
In the other group, only the leader and the man with glasses had abilities—and the glasses man’s ability seemed to be for detection, not fighting.
In the apocalypse, animals mutated faster than humans but usually only became bigger and stronger. It was rare for them to gain abilities.
But this snake was different.
It was a level-two mutant with powers—very dangerous.
Still, the other group had guns, so they weren’t completely helpless.
Both sides faced the snake carefully.
No one wanted to attack first.
They were all waiting for a chance.
Finally, the snake moved first.
It opened its huge mouth and attacked the only woman without powers.
She reacted quickly and rolled away, barely avoiding it.
The shelves behind her were smashed apart.
The leader raised his hand and attacked.
A bolt of silver lightning struck the snake’s head, knocking off several scales.
He frowned.
“Strong defense.”
Seeing this, Mo Han’s eyes flickered.
Lightning ability… so it really was him.
Maybe he should build a good relationship with this group.
In this dangerous world, strong allies were very important.
Even though Zhong Tianxiang cared about him now, Mo Han didn’t fully trust a male lead who might lose his mind over the female lead later.
The snake roared in pain and swung its tail again.
Mo Han didn’t even want to fight—he just wanted to run far away.
As a weak, unfit shut-in, fighting this monster up close was basically suicide.
The supermarket space was small, with shelves blocking movement.
This limited the snake’s speed, which helped them.
But they still couldn’t relax.
If they were hit by that tail, they would either die or be crippled.
After a while, something became clear.
The snake had a target.
It was focusing on the weaker people—the two without powers and the man with glasses.
It had simple intelligence.
It knew Mo Han, Zhong Tianxiang, and the leader were dangerous.
Even though it was stronger, their abilities were more powerful.
So it chose easier targets.
Everyone noticed this.
The leader quietly glanced at Mo Han and Zhong Tianxiang.
If they left now, the snake wouldn’t chase them.
That would leave his group in serious danger.
Zhong Tianxiang hesitated.
He could leave with Mo Han.
The others didn’t matter to him.
But abandoning people like this didn’t feel right.
Mo Han didn’t hesitate at all.
He had already decided—
He needed to build a good relationship with these people.
So he would not leave them behind.
