“I’ve been looking forward to this for a long time.
So let me, on behalf of Zaun, give you all a grand fireworks show.” Felix spread his arms, almost feverish with excitement.
“Happy Progress Day!” Then came a deafening series of explosions.
The commercial district, the Council Hall, Bluewind Court, and several of Piltover’s other famous landmarks were all detonated at the same time.
Colored smoke rose into the air, truly like fireworks.
In the sky, a massive purple monkey pattern appeared.
Felix slowly bowed to the crowd below him, marking the end of the performance.
“Catch him!” Some enforcer finally reacted and shouted, and the other enforcers immediately drew their firearms and aimed at Felix.
Felix let out a sharp whistle.
On the other side, Jinx shot over with a grappling hook.
Felix grabbed her hand, and the two of them went flying up along the line.
They had already scouted their escape route ahead of time, so their getaway was effortless.
“Put out the fires!
Put out the fires!” Caitlyn had found the bombs in advance, but there had been too little time.
She had only managed to evacuate the crowd.
The moment she got everyone out of the Council Hall, the bomb exploded.
Piltover fell into chaos.
Screams and sobs rang out nonstop.
The enforcers were now responsible not only for catching the criminals, but also for putting out fires, saving people, and handling everything else at once.
For a while, they simply could not keep up.
“Did you get them?” Felix asked Jinx beside him while firing another grappling hook.
Jinx did not answer.
She simply tossed Felix the container filled with gemstones.
Felix had designed the container himself.
Its magnetic shockproof device ensured that the unstable Hextech crystals would not explode at random.
“Fantastic!” Felix knew why Jinx had so little interest in the Hextech crystals.
They were the source of her trauma, but they were also something she would have to face sooner or later.
The two of them leapt across the upper levels of the buildings, and before long, they returned to the familiar Lanes.
“Zaun is still better.
The air up there is too thin.
It has no texture.” Jinx dropped onto the sofa and said.
“That’s smog.
It’s bad for your body,” Felix replied.
He did not explain much beyond that.
After all these years living in Zaun, he had gradually gotten used to the air here.
Somehow, it even gave him the feeling of home.
“Ah, today was amazing.
The topsiders are definitely going to remember my voice now!” Jinx stretched lazily.
Felix picked up the container holding the Hextech crystals and entered the laboratory.
These Hextech crystals meant a great deal to him.
They represented a new method of supplying energy, even if it was not quite stable yet.
After that, he immediately sank into research mode, ignoring the passage of time.
In the upper city.
“The Hextech gemstones are gone, and the research report was taken too.” Jayce stood in the temporary Council Hall, gazing at the thriving city of Piltover outside the window, looking troubled.
“How did things become like this?” Professor Heimerdinger’s eyes were damp.
To him, Piltover was a city he had built with his own hands, and Zaun was also a city he had watched rise.
He could not understand why the two cities had such irreconcilable conflict that they had to fight to the death.
“The undercity has been left alone for too long.
There has been a lack of oversight,” the bald councilor said angrily.
“Those people from the undercity simply refuse to submit to our discipline.
They are far too unruly,” Councilor Kiramman added.
“Mr.
Talis, will the stolen crystals be used by them to create weapons?” “Of course they can!
Shimmer, body replacement surgery, and the powerful bombs used in today’s explosions.
We have already seen the undercity’s creativity.” Before Jayce could answer, another councilor spoke first.
A flicker of hesitation crossed Jayce’s eyes, but he still stood and said, “If the person who obtained the crystals has the ability, then they can use them.” “We have to solve this problem,” Councilor Kiramman said again.
“Of course.
This was my dereliction of duty.
My mistake cost people their lives.” Jayce stopped Viktor, who had been about to stand.
“I propose that all Hextech operations be suspended until this incident is fully resolved.” “Have you lost your mind?” “The Hexgates absolutely cannot be shut down.
They are the hub of global shipping.
Piltover’s entire operation depends on them.” The councilors protested one after another.
Their positions were mostly those of merchants first, and Piltover councilors second.
“But shouldn’t we prioritize Piltover’s safety?” Jayce asked in disbelief.
Mel sensed that the situation was turning in the wrong direction.
She still needed Jayce’s help.
And perhaps, to change Jayce’s views, she only needed to change his position.
“Councilors, it seems we have reached a dilemma.” The council suddenly went quiet.
Everyone’s gaze fell on Mel.
“Since Mr.
Talis has proven that he is willing to take responsibility for our safety, even if it means sacrificing his own career…” “Then I propose that the Council add another seat, and that Mr.
Talis be placed in charge of matters concerning Hextech.” As soon as she said that, the Council erupted.
Some opposed it, while others fell into thought.
Professor Heimerdinger hesitated for a moment, then became the first to agree to the decision.
“Since everyone has agreed, let us continue discussing the bombing incident.
Sheriff Marcus, you may tell us your view of the case.” Hearing the Council direct the topic toward him, sweat ran down Marcus’s face.
He knew Felix’s identity.
This time, Felix had appeared directly in front of the public.
There was no way to cover it up.
But he had no way out anymore.
Right now, he represented not only himself, but his family as well.
“We received a civilian report, and we have already narrowed the target down to a new undercity organization called the Firelights.
This organization was established only recently, but it has already recruited a considerable number of people.
Although they have no prior record of entering the upper city, there is still a possibility that they committed the crime.
I need some time to collect evidence.” Marcus ultimately decided to help Silco deflect blame and chose to stall for time.
“That is not what we want to hear!
What we want is for you to find the criminal and throw him in prison!” The bald councilor was furious when he heard that.
“You have no idea how much I lost because of this.
My estate was bombed!
And the Council Hall too!
Now we can only discuss matters here.
Don’t you think this is your failure?” Seeing the councilor’s anger, Marcus felt uneasy, but he also knew he could not gamble with his family’s lives.
He gritted his teeth and said, “Give me a little more time.
I will arrest the criminal!” At that moment, he had already cursed Silco and Felix a hundred and eighty times in his heart.
“I will give you three more days!
Within three days, I not only want to know who the criminal is, I want to see the criminal arrested by you.
Otherwise, you can forget about being sheriff and go live in Zaun with those rats.” In the end, the Council issued its ultimatum.
“Yes,” Marcus answered through clenched teeth.
