Phoebe Faulkner’s words sent the remaining reporters scattering.
With the reporters gone, Phoebe Faulkner could finally enter the hospital.
Although they had left to investigate the truth, she knew she still needed concrete evidence to prove her innocence.
Otherwise, if she were questioned again, she would be the one unable to defend herself, even if she was in the right.
“Kitty, let’s go in.”
“Okay.”
The two entered the hospital and went to find the doctor who had operated on Dawn O’Connell the day before, hoping to get a copy of her pregnancy test results.
However, when they found the doctor, he was surrounded by a scrum of reporters.
A reporter held up a microphone.
“Excuse me, is it true that Miss Dawn O’Connell was pregnant?”
Phoebe Faulkner had thought she wouldn’t need to intervene, but she never expected this.
The attending physician, the very same one who had operated on Dawn O’Connell just yesterday, was telling the reporters with a perfectly straight face, “Dawn O’Connell was not pregnant.
She was pushed down the stairs, which caused internal bleeding.
I don’t know who fed you this false information, but the patient needs to rest now.
I must ask you to leave.”
“What?
She wasn’t pregnant?
Then doesn’t that mean Miss Faulkner was lying?”
“Phoebe, something’s wrong.
We need to get out of here.” Kitty saw the reporters growing agitated, on the verge of a frenzy.
The doctor was obviously lying; he had clearly been bought off.
If they tried to argue their case now, not only would they fail to get their point across, but they would likely be mobbed.
It was far better to leave for now, wait for the reporters to disperse, and then come back to investigate privately.
Phoebe Faulkner knew it was useless to say anything at that moment.
Leaving was the better option.
The two of them avoided the reporters, went downstairs, and got back to the car.
Back in the driver’s seat, Kitty looked worriedly at Phoebe Faulkner in the passenger seat.
“Phoebe, are you okay?” she asked.
“I’m fine.
I was just naive.” Phoebe Faulkner lowered her head and closed her eyes.
“I should have known Howard Lynch had another move prepared.
I refuse to believe he can really get away with anything he wants!”
“Kitty,” Phoebe Faulkner said, looking up.
“Let’s just go back for now.”
“Right.”
On the way back, Kitty’s phone rang.
She answered it, and Phoebe Faulkner, sitting beside her, heard Kitty’s voice rise.
“It’s fine, I’m with Phoebe!
Everything online is just garbage.
Don’t—”
The call ended abruptly.
Kitty looked at Phoebe Faulkner, exasperated.
“Phoebe, my brother saw the news online.
He said he’s flying back immediately.
I swear I didn’t tell him this time.”
Upon hearing this, Phoebe Faulkner took out her phone, found Xavier Irving’s name, and hit dial.
“Hello?
Irving, it’s me—Phoebe.” As soon as the call connected, she quickly added, “I’m fine.
Everything online is just total nonsense.
Aren’t you busy?
You don’t need to worry about me.
I…”
“I’m coming back right—”
But before Xavier Irving could finish, Phoebe Faulkner heard his subordinate’s voice on the other end.
“Captain Irving, good news!
We’ve got a lead on the suspect!”
“Irving, you get back to work.
Kitty’s with me, I’ll be fine.
If I really need your help, I promise I won’t hesitate to ask,” Phoebe Faulkner said, forcing a cheerful tone before hanging up.
“Phoebe…”
Kitty had just started to speak when Phoebe Faulkner’s phone rang again.
Phoebe Faulkner picked up her phone and saw it was a call from an unknown number.
